I have been on Metoprolol for 3 years. A side effect is shortness of breath. You may google for more detailed info. Afib can also cause shortness of breath.
You may talk with your cardiologist about taking one half dose in the morning and one half in the PM. I find it best to take with food. Or a possible change of medication.
Not good your cardiologist seems to be less interested. May want to express your concerns or change to another. However, I am in my 70's and over the years have found the best doctors may be a little arrogant, or seem to be. But when you show concern they respond.
I am 78, very active with swimming, biking, hiking. I meditate and eat only plant-based foods, zero alcohol, applying every lifestyle change I can to ward off the AF. Diagnosed with AF around 2 years ago, ended up taking 50 mg Flecainide twice daily and 25 mg metoprolol succinate once daily. Soon as I began those meds, I felt like I had a mild to moderate case of the flu all the time. Cardiologist blessed my cutting metoprolol in half, which eased the bad side effects considerably; however, after a few weeks I had a breakthrough episode of AF that reverted on its own after 2 hours. EKG in ER during that episode revealed AF and NEW Atrial Flutter. I believe the episode and new flutter was the result of Flecainide without enough beta blocker protection from 12.5 mg metoprolol, but who knows? This was several months ago. I immediately returned to full 25 mg metoprolol, and since then not the slightest sensation of atrial fibrillation. But I’m back with the constant feeling of having the flu and just living with it…
I experienced shortness of breath and I also had to stand up slowly or I felt like I might pass out. My EP recommend 1/2 pill but after another month no real change. I was also on 150mg Flecainide 2x day at the time. He stopped the Metoprolol and over past 2 years has reduced my Flecainide to 100mg 2x day. Doing well so far.
I had terrible air hunger, was gasping for breathe even if I was just sitting still. That and my limbs felt like they were encased in concrete just walking around. And it made me dizzy when rising from bed or from a chair. I did also cut the pills in half, but my afib only happened twice, it was determined to be caused by too high a dosage of thyroid hormone. After thyroid hormone was reduced I didn't have another episode and my cardiologist allowed me to stop taking both metoprolol and Eliquis. Eliquis gave me severe acid reflux which I had not had before taking it, and don't have since stopping it.
Yes
1st time without AF when a new Dr doubled 47.75 to double.
Any amount of Metropolol and I declined but still got it.
24hr Heart Monitor shows no control of Heart Rate. AND PAUSES in the night with my low rate 47avg bpm. 186bpm Day.
BANNED.
Bisoprolol for BP is better for an AF patient.
If you are asthmatic BBs are good.
I take CCB diltiazem 120mg AM. Controls my heart rate. Now in 60s.
Use Bispropolol PM for BP.
I hate METROPOLOL.
Take care but you probably need something so have it changed. What are your numbers heart rate and BP.

Prettywoman15,
I've been taking 25mg Metropolo for two years. Yes, shortness of breath and it appears that at least for me my overall heart rate is higher which seems to go against what I've read, so I cut in half. Thus I take 12.5mg in AM and every other day or so I'll take the full dose. Makes my life better and heart rate much more stable.
Others who have seen my posts before know that I also take natural substances for my AFIB so that I do not take too much prescription drugs. In also take 240mg Diltiezem 2 x a day, sometimes 1 times a day depending on how I feel.
