Dizzy.

I am having dizzy turns today. I wonder if this has anything to do with AF? I've never had this before. My balance is not good. It hasn't been for a long time. I'm quite worried. Usually, I'm out and about a lot, I'm scared to go out . Does anyone else have this?

This happened to me a few months ago. GP could not find out what it was due to so sent me to gerientology at the local hospital where they decided it was due to a vestibular problem ...ear inbalance.I am now waiting to hear from the physio. who will advise on exercises to help but not eliminate the inbalance.Mine came on quite suddenly...over 2 months. If is has been going on for a long time it may be due to advancing ago or so I was told.

Thank you Gingercats.. My balance has not been good for a while . My dizziness was very sudden.

Check blood pressure first. If this doesn't seem to be a problem then get an appointment with your GP as it could be an inner ear problem - my wife and I both suffer now and again. In the mean time don't get up to quickly form a lying or sitting position and make sudden movements with your head like turning quickly as this tends to set me off.

I have had this for over 12 months have had ear tests but no idea what causes it. My spine and neck are a problem but not sure if this is the reason.

Hi benmaise

Have you checked your blood pressure as a low one can make you feel dizzy?

A friend of mine goes to balance classes and I wonder if there is something like that in the area where you live? Also are you drinking enough water?

Sorry can't help anymore than that, other than to say that I used to get dizzy periods if I got out of bed too quickly. Now I sit on the side of the bed and take one of my beta blockers before standing. Nothing to do with the effects of the tablets but more about allowing your heart to adjust to to you standing from laying in bed.

It must be a horrible feeling for you.

Had loads of tests for same, couldn't find a problem, dizzy, out of breath, cough....finally discovered it was my heart, I was in perm. A/F and heart failure ....drugs regime altered and not too bad. I do exercises at night however for the dizzyness, whilst in bed, head turned left the middle then right, apparently shifts little crystals around!!!!! This routine was given to my husband so i'm just following it too, I find it helps until I take my first morning heart meds.

This is the bppv technique , there’s lots of videos on YouTube and if you do it properly, a one off procure, it should sort out your problems so you don’t have to do this every day. It’s very easy , I’ve done it successfully x

Hi,I would ring your GP. As others have said it could be an inner ear infection or even a urine infection as both affect balance and make you feel dizzy.

Hi yes I sometimes feel dizzy, but at the moment I’ve also got vertigo.

I find I get dizzy when my oestrogen is low - might not be relevant to you but just a thought

Hi

Oh dear what to do in menopause.

But looking at your diagnosis it could be your thyroid thyroxine.

What is your TSH. T3 and T4?

Taking des.... thyroid isn't great because it is not safe or passed by medical safety guidelines. Bits from one thyroid willnt be same as another.

Keep to Synthroid. It has the same dose in each pill.

And check you B12 should 500-700 level.

Not sure @Joy2theworld49 if you meant to reply to me (as you did) or the original poster?

Relating to Oestrogen, being dizzy in menopause means make sure your HRT is right.

Completely disagree about natural desiccated thyroid though as it has been in existence for over a hundred years so is very well tested and safe. NDT does have T3 and T4. It may not have the same proportions as human thyroid extract but then neither does treating with just T4 and/or T3/ T3 combination.

T3 being the active hormone can be produced by conversion from T4 in some people but this does not always happen. T3 is needed additionally by many people who don't adequately convert T4 to T3. So T4 (synthroid) may not be an appropriate treatment for all. If you join the HealthUnlocked Thyroid UK group you will find swathes of people who are not well treated by synthroid.

Sorry not having a go, just had to correct the incorrect info.

Hi

I did want to reply to you.

No thanx to Thyroid UK. I cant give advice on my own experience.

I had a Thyroidectomy and 12 lymphs with central dissection in 2020 Feb.

Why because on a Carotid arteries check I presented with a shadow on my thyroid.

Within 4 days of being hospitalised with a stroke and rapid and persistent AF.

It may be easier but I settled for Synthroid because of the saftey of it Kiddie lock, sealed expiry date as well as condensation capsule inside.

In NZ checking out dessicated thyroid way, I read it has not been considered safe 1 and 2 it cannot give one a measured quanyity. So neither quality or quantity PASS.

I declined RAIodine post thyroidectomy. I have a working parathyroid. Damage done by RAI is risky and I was largely trusting my again surgeon (he removed a carcinoma in situe (in a milk duct in 2005).

I need to keep my TSH at 1.7 ish. Its easy to do with synthroid. I take 125mg (1 x 100 an 1 x 25mg).

I've been post menopausal at 40 years when a surgeon talked me into a hysterectomy at the same time as a indirect ingroinal hernia.

I did take an oestrogen capsule under the skin (UK) for some years. Till aged 54. when at 50 I had returned to and later NZ changed it to pay for it.

Interestingly it is the pituitary gland is a balancer of oestrogen. Mine is not enough to register thru a blood test.

You know that using oestrogen patches etc interferes with your thyroxine intake.

With intake thyroxine lots of folk don't adhere to rules like take it early morning and wait 1 hr (changed from 1/2 hr) before eating or drinking beverages except water 1 hr.

No milk or iron for 4 hours. No soy, tofu, seaweed, liquorice, abundant of greens.

I find it easy to maintain 1.7 TSH. My T3 is 3.9-4.2 and T4 21 - 22. Higher if I am adjusting because I have crept up.

The new regime for Low Risk Cancer is to keep TSH not in suppression but a bit higher than low normal.

Hi Cheri Joy. Glad you are happy with your treatment and I see your reasons. It just may not be appropriate for other people.

Hi

I understand especially if they still have a 'playing up' thyroid.

But check out Prof Gary Clayman top surgeon in USA Head and Neck surgery but he keeps to thyroid surgery only, righting botched up jobs etc.

But as in people we all have differing quality and quantity thyroids if we dissect them!

In NZ the oestrogen patches are on back order. Also my Solgar B12 Gold Top Sublingual nuggets 1000ug are no longer available in NZ. I get them ordering from Naturis NZ and they arrive frm Switzerland. Now $60 per bottle!

I have just had an MRI with contrast to study my Pituitary Gland which got 'warm' in my PET scan. There were 3 ? spots on my 4th year Neck Scan. As they had no other images to compare they wish me to wait 6 months for another CT Scan with contrast in November!

At last I booked a trip to JAPAN in October. But I didn't expect to be recalled on my 4th year scan check.

cheri jOY

As I have no visual problems or headaches I think the PET scan showed that I did not take my daily thyroxine in the prior day or day of PET/CT SCAN.

Fingers crossed.

Could be any number of things - in my case I was very dizzy for some weeks and felt I couldn't go out at all . Turns out the culprit was medication I was taking to lower my BP and it was too low. Hope you find the cause and feel better.

Afib does cause dizziness, yes it does affect me too!

JOY2THEWORLD49 profile image
JOY2THEWORLD49 in reply toBaileyC57

Hi

I am sure it is the meds for AF that can cause it. Not the AF itself.

I was lowered in dose of Diltiazem from 180 to 120mg. Which solved it.

Yes dizziness was one of the things I was affected by before I was diagnosed with AF and still have bouts of it on and off.

Hi What meds are you on?

It happened after a bump on the head in a fall.

Are you sure it is not "the world going around?"

VERTIGO?

Are you on Flecainide! I had dizziness, felt unstable on my feet and blurred vision. My doctor cut back my Flecainide from 100mg twice a day to 5mg twice a day. This helped!

I could be something as simple as seasonal sinus problems, or perhaps an inner ear infection. I hope it's a temporary problem and cures itself.

Yes, flecainide it can have this effect. Dizziness or vertigo is the top side effect, I think. I first realized this when I was walking on a treadmill. I turned my head to look at my watch, got dizzy, fell, and slid off the end of the treadmill. I could have been hurt, but fortunately wasn't.

Hi

Oh dear. I can imagine.

I was dizzy through eyesight. I had cylinders put in my lenses. I declined being on the veg belt turning out abnormal vegetables. I became dizzy.
