Hello

I was just wondering if anyone taking metroprolol has experienced any hair loss my hair has gotten thinner over the last year I've been on it for a number of years. I've always had very full hair and hair loss does not run in my family I'm certainly not bald but it's becoming a bit concerning

What else are you on? Most anticoagulants will do it.

So they are not blood thinners but hair thinners? 😉

I was on Eliquis but stopped about 6 months ago. I take valsartan and amlodipine---BP meds (plus Metoprolol). I am one of the fortunate people who had an ablation 4 years ago and have not had any issues, I woke up in recovery and felt great and have done the same since. However, I am diligent about my diet, only an occasional glass of wine. I lift weights. However, I am overly cautious. I try to keep my HR below 110 even when exercising, which I am not sure if this makes good sense

Why do you need a beta blocker if you don't have AF?

Perhaps your high blood pressure is stubborn and the BB has been added for that? My American friend had it added to her BP regimen, as it appears from what she tells me, that it is not uncommon for American doctors to treat hypertension very aggressively as according to her, they consider any measurement above 120/80 as on the high side.

Hi easygoer13,

I am not sure if your med is causing your hair loss. However, I can share my experience with it. For the past number of years my hair was getting thinner and thinner. About 4 to 5 months ago I was prepared to accept inevitable - to wear a wig. Before I looked into purchasing a wig I decided to speak to my doctor about my hairless. I also happened to see a video about zinc. Too much or too little zinc in your diet will cause thinning of your hair.

So about four months ago I did the following:

1. I stopped taking zinc for about a month (I used to take it every day for more than a year) - after a month I took zinc once or twice a week.

2. I started taking Biotin, as per my doctor's suggestion.

3. I massaged my scalp at least 4 times a week. There is a special way of massaging.

4. I increased my protein intake. My diet used to be very low in protein - not intentionally.

Results: Within two weeks, or so, following the above practices, I saw less and less hair on my comb/brush. I used to have handful of fallen hair during my showers, and now just few hairs fall out. My hair is getting thicker and thicker. I pray the God that hairless never comes back. It is a devastating for anyone, especially for a woman to go bold.

I have no idea which, if any, of the above practices stopped my hairless, or it was just a fluke.

NOTE: I am on Amiodarone (100 mg) and on low dose of apixaban.

thank you....makes sense I was on zinc and stopped about 6 weeks ago. I will try the Biotin----what MG are you taking

I take 5000 mcg (5000 microgram equals to 5 milligram) - once a day. I intend to take it every second or third day for now.

Please Note: Stop taking Biotin for about 4 to 7 days before thyroid blood work - this is my endocrinologist's recommendations.

"Anti-seizure medications, beta blockers, and antithyroid medications are also known to cause hair loss for some people. In most cases, hair loss caused by medication is temporary. Lost hair will usually regrow once the medication is stopped."

PS I've been on Metoprolol for ~5 years and haven't experienced any hair loss. I'm not on AC.

Same here : On Metoprolol (50 mg twice a day) and hair shedding is insane! Worse now that my dose was increased back in December. Didn't have this issue on 25 twice a day. Im taking biotin supplements and using scalp detox serum. Thank goodness my hair was super before all this started.

same for me----but I do not want to run out and then try and fix it 😉

Something else to remember is that some hair loss occurs naturally in the spring and autumn as part of the normal growth cycle. Mine is thinning since I started on metoprolol -- in the autumn, a double whammy. I've had a little more in the spring but not as bad. Now the summer to recover, I hope.

No but I sure have since being on Sotalol and Diltiazem. Handfuls every day. Plan on having curls tattooed on my head when I go bald,

That’s interesting as I’m on both Metoprolol and Eliquis and have noticed that my hair comes out in gobs when I shampoo it…thought it was because it has gotten quite long. It’s a mystery…

If you are low in the thyroid hormone you will lose hair which is how I know my level needs checking so there are many other reasons why hair loss can erupt. I'm on Metoprolol and it hasn't made a difference for me. Also keep in mind that male pattern baldness can skip a generation.
