Hi,

I was put on Bisoprolol 5mg when diagnosed with paroxysmal AF in Jan 2010. Stayed on it until August 2023. When my surgery pharmacist agreed to switch me to Nebivolol 3.75mg. No sweat. Initially, when first put on Bisoprolol I was told take it in the morning ..... this gave me the side effect of random full flow nosebleeds. Complained to my GP and she said take it at night. Never had a nose bleed ever since. Ever !

The only reason I switched to Nebivolol was that the Bisoprolol finally caught up with me and made me feel like the Zombie from the Land of the Living Dead ... or worse.

No problems ever since. I can't give you a definitive answer as I do not, nor have I ever taken or been prescribed Flec. But from my research if you take Bisoprolol at night the worst of the side effects will occur when you are asleep ... all things being equal. I still take my Nebivolol at night.

Again from my research Bisoprolol is a heart rate control drug ... it is not a blood pressure control drug, although it has some properties which some healthcare professionals credit to helping a bit with BP. I also take SPECIFIC BP control drugs such as Ramipril and Felodopine.

If I may suggest, contact your GP and ask for their approval to take it at night ... OR just tell them you want to try it at night. Best thing I ever did and still do.

Spoke to af nurse today , she said it was a good idea , realy hope it works for me , as day to day is a real struggle at the minute, if not I will ask my doctor for a different beta blocker to try , but been told it’s very unlikely to be the tablets , but I’m sure it is , Thankyou for your reply realy helps 🙂

I was like a total zombie on bisopralol whether I took it morning or night. It was changed to a calcium channel blocker.

I also take 3.75 mg of bisoprolol daily. I take mine around 7.00 pm, about half an hour before dinner. My blood pressure is very stable throughout the day and within the normal range, typically 110/70.I should add that I also take ramipril early in the morning, which is a consideration.

My only thought is that bisoprolol is long acting and soon reaches what's called a "steady state" level in the blood stream. This should mean that the time of taking it becomes neither here nor there after a few days. That said, there might well in individual cases be some effect straight after a dose as I have read here of some finding a night time dose better. I've also read that blood pressure medicines taken at night reduce the BP better, but whether that applies to bisoprolol, I don't know.

When I was first put on Bisoprolol at 5mg a day I would take it with breakfast. Like clockwork 2 hrs later I would get a headache and start to feel awful- sluggish and groggy.

That’s interesting and the finger certainly points towards the drug (or I suppose it could be its effect on heart rate, output and blood pressure, perhaps. It seems to take about an hour or so to work).
