My question would be more - what is NOT appropriate if you have asthma and Beta Blockers which are often first medication offered for rate control are often contraindicated but you need to ask your prescribing doctor - if GP then ask them to confer with specialists - both asthma and AF specialist.

Better to use combi inhaler or preventer inhaler than too much reliever as reliever can provoke AF.

In my case asthma was diagnosed 49 years ago. I started with paroxysmal AF 29 years ago. For the first 10 months I was prescribed amiodarone, which did not help, and then Flecainide which reduced episodes to 1 or 2 10 minute episodes a year . Around seven years ago I was found to be in persistent, now deemed permanent, though asymptomatic, AF. The Flecainide was stopped, I only take an anticoagulant for AF.

A few years ago when I was in hospital to have my appendix out, during the operation my heart rate rose to over 190 bpm, so a well-meaning hospital doctor, status not known, prescribed low dose Bisoprolol beta blockers. After 7 weeks I developed painful urticaria, and when being weaned off the beta blocker I had a very sudden exacerbation of asthma which led to emergency admission to hospital for three days.

For asthma, I was tested for allergens, and then had a course of desensitising injections which worked. I also get exacerbations of asthma from colds and infections, and have had a variety of inhalers over the years. For several years I've used Duoresp Spiromax 320/9, plus occasional Salomon.

My beta blocker was changed to Nebivolol from Bisoprolol and second the advice about using a combi inhaler or preventer rather than a reliever as that increases heart rate. I've been using Seretide and found it to be the best combi for me HTH.
