I am just curious if anyone else takes this medication. My last visit to the Cardiologist this past week, resulted in him informing me that due to my age, it was time to start taking an anti-coagulant. I had been taking Aspirin for twelve years. He told me to make sure to wean off the Asprin for four to five days. He said it stays in your system that long. He told me that the Edoxoban is gone within 24 hours, in comparison. Said it is safe. However I always worry about bleeding. Seems the slightest scratch bleeds. Of course that could be due to the Asprin. I had not really thought about it, till now. So if you have experience with this drug, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Just got prescribed Edoxoban 30mg
Edoxaban is used prophalacticly to reduce the risk of stroke which is sometimes correlated with afib. I take 60 mgs per day with no noticeable side effects. I think that this is the case for the majority of those who use this forum. Often a post about anticoagulants will generate a debate about the risk of bleeding v the risk of stroke. My personal view is that the consequences of a stroke are likely to be much more serious than the consequences of a bleed. No decision is without risk.
Thanks for your input! I figure my worries are mostly unfounded, since Aspirin can also cause bleeding.
Since my A-Fib ablation in 2017, my cardiologist had me on Apixaban and I have had no side effects from it to date. I did not want to give up my Aspirin, as it worked so well for any osteoarthritis aches and pains, but the doctor said it was not enough and insised upon Apixaban instead. Female 84 yrs..
To be honest, aspirin is more dangerous than anticoagulation in that it results in more gastric bleeds, ulcers etc with very little benefit in terms of stroke prevention in AF. It has benefits for those with stents or artificial heart valves, or as a treatment post stroke but not as a preventataive.
It works in a different way to aspirin and removes the risk of internal bleeds associated with aspirin. The dose is a low dose suggesting you are lower in bodyweight but prescribing rules may be different in Germany. I have taken 60mg once a day for 9 months with no side effects. It's an anti-coagulant rather than antiplatelet medicine used generally when an arrhythmia has been detected. If you do not have arrthymia in the UK an antiplatelet Clopidogrel would be more likely prescribed.
My doctor mentioned, that I was a small man. So probably that is the reason, or perhaps because my chad score is not that bad. fyi I weigh 67kg
UK guidance is circa 60kg so that will be the reason. Specifically on bleeding, I currently have a cannula fitted and giving daily bloods. Bruising is a little more noticeable but I've been a pain cushion in the last 8 days! I'm also on antiplatelet Clopidogrel as well as 60mg Edoxaban. I'll be having an angiogram and will only miss the Edoxaban on the day of procedure. The risks are very low and different to the aspirin risk.
I have been on an anticoagulant since first diagnosed with AF in Jan 2010, then aged 65. Do the Math .... I'm now 79 .... so from 2010 to November 2023 I've been on Warfarin and in November 2023 my GP switched me to Edoxaban. No sweat, no problems.
The reason for the switch was that Edoxaban would enable my system to better cope with the very high grade prescription pain relief drugs that I was to start.
As I say .... no sweat, no problems.
I have never taken Asprin in my life. As an anticoagulant I regard it is 'stone age stuff'.
It was my original Cardiologist who put me on a full dose of Asprin. When I asked about blood thinners, he said " you'd rather take rat poison? " Later my GP lowered the dose, and nobody ever said to stop, until now. Even now, he said it was simply that due to my age, there was a greater risk of stroke. I have only had one episode of afib in the last five years, and that was only when he tried to switch me from daily flecainide, to PIP.
I take 60mg edoxaban with no problem. Occasionly smear of blood when blowing nose, occasional streak with toothpaste spit but nothing alarming or ongoing. No excessive bruising. Aspirin gave me tinnitus which went along with stopping aspirin. Take care 🦊x
I often ask how do I know my edoxaban is working as I always bled more with aspirin than I do with edoxaban.I have had wisdom tooth out recently with edoxaban. Not a problem.
Since taking anticoagulants in 2019 I have never noticed any change in the way cuts bleed. I think people differ in this. My elderly friend is now 90 and he's on warfarin for his permanent AF and is otherwise well. He bruises very easily, but doesn't bleed especially noticeably. At 90, a lot of people do bruise easily, I think.
Steve
can only agree with what the others have said I take Edoxaban without problem, no bruising and am in the middle of pruning a large number of roses and getting ragged by thorns causing only a pin prick of blood no different than before I was taking it. No bleeding when cleaning my teeth I look after my gums and teeth
While I have been prescribed an anticoagulant, I haven't yet started because of ongoing concerns about a recurrence of an intracranial bleed.
But as a result I also have an ongoing interest in the performance of all anticoagulants and Warfarin re stroke risks and major (intracranial) bleeds. In regard to this, and as a way of reassurance re Edoxaban, I want to draw your attention to some recent German results which, without examining the authors affiliations, does give positive results for Edoxaban over other DOACs and Warfarin.
Lowest risk results for strokes, and equal lowest risk results for major bleeding. What's not to like?

Good luck, bob.

Hi Budken, I am also 75 years old male, diagnosed with af in 2013. Was on warfarin until after COVID, then started on Apixaban. Stayed on that for a year and now on 30 mg Edoxaban once a day, for last 12 months. No problems at all. Yes, if you cut yourself it takes a while longer to coagulate, but just maintain pressure on it for 10-15 minutes. No big deal.
Hope this helps
Hi, my parents in law are both in their 80s, both have heart conditions, though not AFib. They have been taking aspirin for years and their consultant said why change now, as they're happy on it.
My dentist told me two weeks to totally clear effect of aspirin
