I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation after an ecg 4 weeks ago. I started taking edoxoban 60mg once a day and bisoprolol 1.25 twice a day with no noticeable side effects until recently.
Four days ago I developed an itchy rash possibly hives. Also I have stomach discomfort and nausea beginning approx one hour after taking the edoxoban.
I also have asthma and take Fostair next preventer inhaler.
I have a cough and cold at the moment and feel generally tired and unwell.
Does anyone know if it is likely to be the side effects of the edoxoban causing the rash, stomach discomfort and nausea after 3 weeks of no problems.
I had an echocardiogram 4 days ago and an appointment with my GP for the results in 10 days time. Should I try and see her sooner to discuss these new symptoms?
My heart rate according to my fitbit varies between 63 (resting) and 112 when active.
As a newcomer to this forum I would appreciate any advice.

Hello Mary, I have no personal experience of Edoxaban but we sometimes get posts from folk about itching but it’s often difficult to know which medication causes what side effect, particularly as some side effects from betablockers are also similar to the symptoms that some have with their AF. Generally, we suggest giving the body time to adapt to the medication and you might find it helpful to read more about medication and AF in the AF Association webpage. Just click on the “Pinned Post” for Newbies and Oldies to the right of this page and from there, you will be able to access lots of helpful information. You need to be sure that you follow the instructions regarding taking the medication. There is an anticoagulant called Rivaroxaban and it is crucial that that is taken whilst having a proper meal, I’m not sure whether the same applies to Edoxaban but again, there is easy access to information about anticoagulation.
Having a cold and cough isn’t going to help either, and Bisoprolol is not advised for patients with asthma (check the leaflet). Obviously GP’s vary enormously, but very often they restricted to prescribing Bisoprolol although alternatives are available. In truth, you would be well advised to ask for a referral to see an Electrophysiologist (a Cardiologist who specialises in arrhythmias) as they are best placed to provide a treatment plan specific to your needs and overall health. That said, you probably have already seen a cardiologist (hence the echocardiogram) so it might be better to wait and see what your GP tells you. Please read as much as you can about AF as it will help you to discuss future plans with your GP and will help give you the confidence to seek answers to any questions you might have. The good news is that your heart rate appears to be well controlled but try and keep it below 100 if possible ......hope this helps for starters.
Some good advice here. Thank you . I am feeling much better this morning after a good nights sleep which is quite unusual for me. I will see how I feel later after taking the edoxaban.
Asthmatics should not take beta blockers. I too am on fostair but not a beta blocker and I really itch.... head, shoulders and back. I see the Asthmatic consultant in three weeks. Will let you know his answer. Fostair does work well as a preventer so it may be a case of cure one to get something else.
Thank you for your reply. I did remind the GP that I am on asthma meds but he said that it was ok. I asked to change from costs or as one of it's side effects is increased heart rate. I will talk about it again next visit. Good luck with your appointment.
I started with a rash when I went on bisoprolol. It comes on and off, my skin will start to burn and then feel itchy. I went on to Edoxaban early last year after nearly 8 years on warfarin and have noticed no side effects from that at all. I've felt nauseous on and off for years but my GP said it is hardly surprising given how many different drugs I'm on
Thanks for your reply. I'm beginning to think that it might be the bisoprolol not the edoxaban which may be causing the rash. I took an antihistamine tablet last night and so far today I have no rash and no nausea, and I slept well last night . I will take one tonight also and see what happens tomorrow. I agree that when we all have to take so much medication nausea is not uncommon. I don't like taking so much but I understand that it is necessary.
Hi I was prescribed Bisoprolol but it made me quite ill, needing a trip to A/E . I did not have a rash but experienced extreme nausea and vision problems . Now on Amlodopine instead . Endoxaban was changed to Riveroxaban recently, though I did not seem to have any side effects from Endoxaban after a blood test my consultant stopped it .
