Cough lozenges

I’ve got a tickly cough and want to suck a lozenge in the hope it will sooth it. I’ve got some Wilko lozenges that are Amylmetacresol. Does anyone know if they are ok to use with Warfarin and Bisoprolol - and of course Afib ! I can’t find this ingredient listed in drug interaction websites so I’m guessing it’s harmless as a lozenge. Would welcome thoughts though.

Annie.

I had a bad chest infection before Christmas which left me with a very irritating cough for several weeks. I found that the most effective solution was to suck Werther’s original butter candies. They are very soothing and there is also a sugar free version.

Now, I did think of those during the night….👍

A GP of my acquaintance says any pastilles without medication are just as effective, of course the sugar content has to be considered. I'm not a fan of artificial sweeteners. My mum used to give me a saucer with butter and sugar mixed on it for night times. Of course it was all gone before I fell asleep. Another option is melt seedless jam with honey and a bit of water and take as needed ( totally off topic but helped my dog too!!)

Some interesting ideas there Bagrat. Thank you. There used to be some very nice blackcurrant pastilles - not sugar coated and not too sweet, but can’t find them for sale anywhere. Also some tiny liquorice ‘bits’ in a mini tin - Melloids ? - that were ideal for a tickle cough.

Were you thinking of Altoids haven't seen them in last 50 yrs though😀. Then we move onto the vexed question of liquorice. ... hey ho.

We get Altoids when we visit my son in the US. They are still quite popular there. Got some left in a tin by my chair. You may be able to get them on line but probably expensive - we both love them especially the cinnamon ones in winter - or the ginger ones.

I used to use "Imps" which are hard tiny bits of licorice when I was teaching. Have still got a tin left because they lasted for ages. Not sure if you can get them now - I would try on line. Best to ask your pharmacist what you can use for cough as they will know all your medications. These days I actually use sugar free mints.

I remember Imps ! Yes, I think those, Melloids and Imps were all more or less the same. Another brand were the same but the name was dropped as ‘inappropriate’ these days. I will try on line for something like this…..😋

Thank you Tapabac. I was feeling too lazy to go downstairs and mix that ! Serves me right 🙄

Aaaah if we were closer I would come and mix it for you. My son has bees so he makes his own pure honey. Bit of a messy job, but it's his house ha ha!

I’ve found ‘Wine gums’ very soothing for irritating coughs. There’s nothing much in them apart from glycerin and fruit flavouring. Not as sweet as fruit pastilles and more helpful. Suck slowly rather than chew. Alternatively buy glycerin from chemists and make hot drink with glycerin, honey and lemon?

Olbas pastilles also very good at night for suppressing coughs and help clear congestion.

However, best thing to do is ask your pharmacist (ideally where you get your scripts filled) for best options for soothing a sore throat i.e. before you buy them. If they don't ask what medications you're on, then make sure you tell them and also ask whether ok to take if you have AFib.
