coming off lansoprazole

I’ve been prescribed Lansoprazole for 6 weeks after ablation. Do you need to wean yourself off them slowly, or is it ok to just stop taking them suddenly.?

I just stopped but didn’t seek advice. As you probably know, we cannot advise on medication so best that you talk to your pharmacist…..

ASAP in my mind. Horrid things.

Thanks. Don’t like taking them either, but thought I’d better do as the Dr who did my ablation, told me to. Most information I can find, says to start taking them every other day for 2 weeks before you stop them, so I’ll do that and hopefully have no problems.

After taking PPI's for only six weeks you probably don't need to wean at all , unless your doctor advised otherwise. Be assured your doctor made a prudent decision prescribing PPI's to protect your upper GI tract after ablation.

Thanks Jim.I don’t suppose they would give you them if they weren’t neccessary

Hi Sixtychick,

I suffered a little with too much stomach acid when the PPI was stopped at first but kept eating light and healthy. I also had a few teaspoons of yogurt after every meal to help the healing process. It took a couple weeks to fully recover from the PPIs after ablation.

Just a necessary evil 👿. Good wishes.

Thanks for your advice..

Unless you previously suffered from acid reflux, it shouldn't cause any issues whatsoever to stop it. If you did previously suffer from reflux acidity, then you might find acid rebound happens, in which case, have some Rennies or similar to hand or resume the lansoprazole (it takes a few hours to work, though), then try to take it every other day for a while, and so on, tailing off.

I would say that PPI drugs like lansoprazole are safe in the sense that you can take them or not as required, although, as they are prescription only, you should really ask your GP or a pharmacist for individual advice.

Thanks Steve. I think I might just take the last weeks supply every other day, just to be on the safe side. Never had any reflux problems, so hopefully will be ok.

Those six weeks have flown by! I think they give it these days as a precaution as the heat from the ablation catheter can irritate the food pipe, which would be made worse by any acid reflux.

It’s been three and a half weeks since my ablation now, 🤞🤞 the ablation has done the trick. Still got another two and a half weeks worth of Lanzoprasole left to go. Still not got an appointment for the 3 month follow- up with Dr Sandilands.

The 3 month check up is more of a 'guide' date I found! 5 months ....

He did you proud!

I’ve heard that cardiology is very busy indeed. Apparently Covid-19 has added to the numbers with heart illnesses. There’s lots round here at present so take care yourself.

Glad it wasn’t like that when I was in. Because of the Drs strike, the wards weren’t full.I had my Covid jab 2 weeks ago and my flu one a few days ago. Protected now, hopefully. You take care of yourself as well.

I’ve just had a shingles jab having reached the grand old age of 70 this year (oh to be young again). It was the most uncomfortable jab I’ve had in a very long time. We’re having our covid boosters when we get back from a little holiday in Norfolk!

Had my shingles one 2 years ago.No probs with it. Enjoy your break in Norfolk. We were there in June. We have a touring caravan and were on the Sandringham estate caravan club site.

You're a friend of Charles and Camilla, then? We like that part and especially the reserve at Snettisham (being keen birdwatchers). Old Hunstanton is very special, too, but we stay now in the centre of Holt in a slightly-too-"bijou" converted barn cottage - my wife, Wendy's friend's, and one of life's rare bargains!

Sounds nice. Shame the weather has changed though. Enjoy it whatever..

I am only on them as snd when I need them

after your 6 weeks perhaps keep a box of gaviscon handy. I found them great if I had a bit of burning

Sixtychick profile image
Sixtychick in reply to Tapanac

Thanks, might do that, I have a pack of Rennies in the medicine cupboard,in case my husband needs them, not sure if they do the same as Gaviscon.

I just think gaviscon is best xx

Rennies are the fastest branded tablet as they are 100% gentle alkali that immediately neutralises stomach acid. Even faster is sodium (burp...) bicarbonate! But Gaviscon (much cheaper to buy in the un-branded forms...) produces a thick frothy slime that floats atop the stomach contents (allegedly) and prevents reflux. It does zilch for me but is popular.

Hi, I was given Lansoprazole to take for 6 weeks after my ablation in May. I didn’t have any problems with them and came off them straight away. My EP said it was ok for me to stop without weaning myself off them.

I was prescribed them after my ablation but didn't take them after doing a bit of research. I fessed up to my doctor a bit later and he wasn't concerned as my digestion was fine. The critical medication is the anticoagulant which you must stick with.

Sixtychick profile image
Sixtychick in reply to Pindarus

Thanks. I shall keep taking them, but hopefully I’ll have no problems with stopping them. My discharge letter said I would be on anti- coagulants for life, but it looks like they’ll be stopping my Sotalol. I’m a little worried about that, as I’ve been on them for quite a few years. I shall have to stop them very gradually.
