VitD, Mg, CoQ10 make a difference? and Cardiologist update

it’s been 8 months since CV and all good at my appointment, he said my reduction of metoprolol to 8.5mg is very low but still might be enough to reduce that adrenaline when my heart wants to play up during exercise or when I’m under stress, so I will stay on it and might even reduce or stop the morning dose and just take it at night.

What he did like was my bloods he remarked how good everything was especially cholesterol coming down by 15%. I told him it was porridge every day, a better diet and exercise.

As there’s been chat about Vit d3 Magnesium and CoQ10 I asked for them to be included in my bloods, the latter 2 for the first time. I’ve been taking 1000iu VD3, 330mg elemental Mg in the form of Taurate in the morning and Bisglycinate at night and 200mg CoQ10. My VitD went up from 60 to 94 nmol the reference range is 50-125nmol. The Mg serum which only measures the level in blood is an indicator but remember the majority of Mg is in our bones and tissue. This level was .88 and reference range is .70 to 1.1 nmol so I am close to the middle. The CoQ10 is 578 and reference range is 500-1800 nmol so I am just inside the lower range and that’s after 8 months of supplementing! After 50 yrs of age our bodies produce less of the the CoQ10 and it has a role in maintaining a healthy heart and brain.

Do these Supps make a difference? Not sure if it’s that, but looking at the numbers and how well I feel I’m sticking to my regime. Having said that I still get the random ectopic especially when I eat too quickly.

How are you tolerating the bisoprolol? I ask because I never used daily beta blockers when not in afib as PIP and did just fine. I know they are prescribed like you describe, but doesn't mean they help everyone. A trial off of them is something to consider.

I'm also currently supplementing magnesium, coq10 and vit D. No idea if they make any difference or not :)

Yes Jim I’m ok on them my son who is a doctor in emergency laughed when I mentioned I cut back to 8.5mg dose he said it wouldn’t do much. The dosage of metoprolol and bisoprolol is different. In any case I will start by reducing the morning dose then eliminating that and see about getting rid of the night one.

I really believe the supps make a difference I can’t imagine how low my CoQ10 was before I started. Keep well mate

What a great, positive post. Glad to hear things are working out for you and good for you on the med reduction! A fellow reductionist over here - my cardio just rolls his eyes when I tell him😀

Just a couple of questions if I may. Out of interest, what form of CoQ10 are you taking? I’ve read that the ubiquinol version is absorbed more readily than the ubiquinone version but then it’s much more expensive, of course and I’m not convinced! Also, do you take Vit K2 along with your Vit D supplement?

good to hear your numbers are good too. Mine is Renew Actives 200mg per day and is ubiquinone. No K2 I eat a wide variety of foods and hopefully pick up some through that. Good luck at your next review too

Excuse me, I have ectopics (SVES and VES) and Bisprolol doesn't help me. I tried drinking Flecanid and nothing. I don't know what to do. I thought I'd try like you with those vitamins etc. What do you recommend. My cholesterol is 5.8.@

It’s always hard to pinpoint what works with ectopics but I have lots of berries, a few prunes a day, mushrooms and in terms of Vitamins you need to know what your current levels of magnesium, vitamin D and CoQ10. If they are low then magnesium taurate or Glycinate may help. The CoQ10 is something I expect most people over 60 are low and may need supplements. Remember what works for one does not always work for another. Get your levels checked. Exercise helped me too and finally I read a book called Breath by James Nestor it’s something I practice daily since I purchased the book in January. I had a bad few months late last year so it’s taken time to sort things out. Good luck and hope that things settle for you soon

My London Naturopath told me some years back up your CoQ10 to get to the top of the normal range.

that’s interesting, I think I’ll be getting up my levels closer to mid range. It would be interesting if cardiologists were to be surveyed to see what their patients levels are sitting at.
