Hi all, I had my second ablation in 2020 and was asked if I wanted to be part of a catheter ablation study whereby they wanted to see the benefit or drawbacks of the two types of 3D mapping devices commonly used.
I agreed without hesitation as the risks were minimal, but I saw it as a chance that if they were mapping out my heart’s interior twice then I’d have a better outcome.
Anyway, post ablation I’ve not had A-fib touch wood, but I’m getting loads of ectopics and recently went for a stress test at the hospital where I did 29 mins on the treadmill but could feel every single bump and it’s usually when I’m walking fast and or uphill. Anyway the report came back and suggested I may have very briefly had a bout of PAF.
But, I’m in a difficult situation as I’ve always been very physically fit until I was diagnosed in 2018 and have the worst cardio now, and as a result I’ve put on weight and my BP has risen. I’m reluctant to go on BP meds and I’m desperately looking to try and find ways of improving my cardio and in turn hopefully lose weight and improve my BP.
I started taking Magnesium Citrate about 4 months ago and I think it’s helped to reduce the ectopics a bit, but I’ve read that it’s in fact Magnesium Taurate I need, but I’m not sure what dose people generally start at. My consultant is happy for me to try what works.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Leon

Long time since we heard from you! Nice to see you back.
I was taking Magnesium Glycinate and then just bought Solgar's Taurine 500mg to take at the same time. Years ago I took Magnesium Citrate and it made my stomach sore. I always take all my pills now mid breakfast.
Good to hear from you. I use to take a combined magnesium taurate until prices rocketed. I now take Magnesium Glycinate from Love Life Supplements and Taurine from Solgar. Couldn’t get the Solgar last order so using Taurine from Cytoplan at the moment. This is just a personal take but I never take anything new at the highest dose. I usually start around low to midway of what is says on the tin and see how I feel. You can then adjust accordingly.
Hi D, yes ive tried mag, taurate recently for second time and found no benefit that i could discern, but i wouldnt say not to take it as sometimes as with drugs or supplements an effect can be dose dependent.
I’m on both Mag Taurate and Mag Glycinate total 320mg. I had a Cardioversion back in December then in January one day after far too much sugar throughout the day the ectopics hit me after dinner. This went on for 5 days. I then eliminated added sugar and went on the magnesium. Only sugar comes from whole fruits like berries and apples etc… and eating healthfully. Ectopics have not returned. At the end of the day it’s probably a bunch of things I’m doing together but I do feel more relaxed with the Mag. I’m also on very low dose of Metoprolol until my next cardiologist visit in a month
There really is no scientific validation for the taurate salt, just hearsay and some doctors who are promoting it. I wish there were some proper evidence, but I can find none, neither, in truth, for any other salt of magnesium. It seems, scientifically speaking, that they do very little indeed. They are all, however, safe to take and so worth a try as it's clear some here find them useful. I gave up with the taurate salt after a few months as I felt no effects at all. I tried citrate and oxide, too, but eventually used these more successfully to help with constipation!
If you are having ectopic beats, rather than AF, then that is what I have pretty much daily and sometimes quite disturbingly so as they come in runs, couplets and triplets. I have been told they are safe and lead to nothing worse. My AF is quite infrequent these days, thankfully (fingers are crossed) and it seems daily bisoprolol is helping with that.
Hi there, with respect to exercise and blood pressure, do some googling on isometric exercises, such as the plank and wall sits, and their positive effect on blood pressure. I've found them to be very effective and really good at building core strength.
I think your digestive system will tell you as get it wrong and you will have the runs and will have to adjust accordingly. Salads are full of magnesium. That's all I take now.
Since my PAF went bonkers last October I’ve been taking Mag bisglycinate, Taurate, ionic (that’s a 99% absorbable liquid form), plus an algae Mag, but don’t know what sort that is. Not all at once of course - I rotate them round. Sadly, none of them made any discernible difference. Once in A&E, (despite me telling them I take loads of mag), they insisted on giving me an infusion to see if they could knock the heart back into normal rhythm. Never felt so ill in my life!! They quickly turned it off and my PAF heart rate reduced back down to 110-120 bpm again.
Too much Citrate will loosen your bowels, so beware. It’s useful for constipation.
Four weeks ago I too had an “acutely successful” ablation and sadly, like you it’s left my heart rate a bit unstable. Just nipping up the stairs can push it up over 100bpm, but I gather this is normal and it’ll settle down again in a couple of months. I do hope so, cos like you I’m not exercising as much as I used to and am feeling podgy. I live in beautiful Devon, which means ANY walk involves bloody steep hills! 🫤
Just try to be careful what you eat. I’ve virtually cut all carbs, reduced wheat intake to almost nothing and I carefully monitor my sugar intake. It’s not much fun, but necessary.
I’ve had ectopics for 25+ years. Multiple episodes per day. In September 2022 I had my first PAF episode which woke me up during the night. High of 175bmp. It lasted 10 hours before returning to NSR on its own. I was put on Eliquis, nothing else. Fortunately I’ve only had one other very short nighttime episode so I probably have Vagal PAF.
In December I read some information online about magnesium taurate relating to heart rate and decided to try it. I started taking 125mg of magnesium taurate per day divided (morning 62.5mg and evening 62.5mg) My ectopics quickly ceased about 99%. I will occasionally feel a short blip of an ectopic but most days there are none felt. For me magnesium taurate has totally changed things for the better!
I will also add that when I had my first PAF episode I was very overweight (5’-7”, over 200 lbs w/ BMI 32). I have lost 54 lbs since December.
I only had the two PAF episodes before I started losing weight and no episodes during my weight loss. I’m convinced my weight loss has improved how my vagal nerve reacts while I’m sleeping because my heart and other organs are no longer under pressure by fat, therefore my vagal nerve is also not being pressured. I’m still taking Eliquis because I have a Chadsvasc score greater than or equal to 2.
I take magnesium taurate and magnesium glycinate morning and night - both, both times. I think they've helped reduce my ectopics and PAFs. I had to juggle w amounts for tummy issues, but have it ironed out now.
