Could Vitamin C be beneficial?

Feedback please on other’s experience of Vit C to help reduce AFib burden.

I have been on dronedarone now for two years and as reported last year it’s been a game changer for me. Here’s my previous post which is still valid.

However, about 4 months ago my frequency of episodes increased from one to five times a month. After two months the frequency reduced back again to once a month. I had no idea of what was going on…as basically my diet and life style were unchanged.

I did find that the reduction in episodes aligned exactly with me starting vitamin C tablets daily (1,000 mg) which is equivalent to ~14 oranges daily. I recognise it’s early days yet… but it seems to be the most likely reason for me…! It might be a coincidence so this note is to get feedback from others

I did a literature search and found this link to York Cardiology.

The ever-reliable Dr Gupta says Vit C has some anti-oxidation properties and that there is some evidence of it being beneficial to reduce the frequency of Afib. I looked at the references he quoted and there are some benefits identified. Reading the comments on the video there is anecdotal evidence from a lot of people of reduced Afib episodes as well as elimination of ectopics. As drug companies don’t benefit there haven’t been any more detailed trials.

Hi Vince

I've taken vitamin C along with other supplements for a few years now and my AF is so much better. I also take magnesium, taurine, zinc, vitamin B, D3, K2 and Co-enzyme Q10. Keep telling myself to cut some out (possibly the zinc), but I'm feeling really well at the moment and my permanent AF effects are just about none existent.

At Dr Gupta's recommendation I also started 125 mg of magnesium taurate 2xD. I think at that dose it must be elemental magnesium. Also, 2 magnesium biglycinate tabs at night for sleep along with other things. I use the Cardiovascular Research brand of mag taurate.

Interesting. I'm not consistant with vit C.... Think I'll give it a whirl.. What dose does he advise on? I was a bit confused as I read through his article. For me it will depend on tolerance.... I usually can't take it daily..... Think that's why I stopped!! I've tried drink soluble ones too as I understood they're more gentle on the tummy. Same effect!

I saw his video on Vitamin C and I recall that he recommended 2 grams a day. I usually put the tabs in a smoothie and find them quite tolerable. I'm not consistent though because I put small amounts of several things in a smoothie and sometimes forget something. Now, I think I'm concluding that the air whipped into the smoothie may be causing me stomach and intestinal gas problems so I'm trying not to make one for a few days.

Thank you Coconut Bob. Shame I won't be able to tolerate that amount. Will upset my tummy etc...Fruit will have to be my source.

Then I found this article & wondered if its because I think my vit C has been synthetic.

When I read about Vit C, I always think of the comment made by the late Canine Geneticist, Dr Malcolm Willis. He was an expert on genetic problems in dogs , one of them being Hip Dysplasia - some authorities advocated the use of Vitamin C supplementation in the dog's diet, to minimise this defect - his response was 'It's a water-soluble vitamin and your body will only absorb a small amount' the rest will be disposed of in the urine, the only people who will benefit are the manufacturers, who will get rich ' !

Aye..... same argument is made with B12. However I have to inject a ridiculous amount...but if I don't am ill... Yet are bodies only use a little amount of b12. . So I wonder about the absorption and the process of getting it into the cells where its needed. Has that been investigated...because I think that's maybe an issue for some people like me? But it a good point about blanket treatment if its not needed...
