Does apixaban give you wind?

Please forgive another question from a newly diagnosed. Does apixaban make you fart? I have been taking it for nearly two weeks and seem to be very windy, to the extent of waking in the night with it. Has anyone else experienced this? I don’t think I am eating anything different.

I am not sure. Could be.

I haven’t experienced that and think it unlikely as Apixaban is absorbed in the stomach and upper intestine and usually farting indicates fermentation in the lower intestine - I know certain foods always gets me going so I need to be careful to avoid in company!

However, I have read other reports of flatulence when on Apixaban and it seems statistically that women over 60 are more susceptible. ????

If it persists and becomes troublesome go see your doctor and see if another anticoagulant suits you better.

My old Aunt (long dead) always told me to take charcoal tablets so I didn't smell. Works well.

(Third year chemistry lessons. Animal charcoal removes colour and vegetable smell. --- I think its that way round.lol 😁 )

I suffer from wind afternoons and evenings. It drives me bonkers and can even bring on an AF episode. The only tablets I'm on are Sotalol. The sides effects for 1 in 100 include flatulence ! Such fun.😳😁

yes it does that to me too couldn’t think what was causing it

Hi, I don’t think it’s caused wholly by medication, reckon it’s one of the undesirable effects of heart failure. Reduced blood flow affects every body function. Try the charcoal tablets as BobD suggests. Diet must have an effect as well. Regards, David.

on charcoal - it may affect how much of drug is absorbed so advisory is take at a different time leaving a few hours between.

I like the charcoal idea but haven’t got heart failure so it can’t be that.

I'd say that wind is most likely caused because your bowel is not being completely emptied. Here's my for cure for it.

Try a glass of orange juice (with a little water added) each morning before a muesli breakfast.

My Home Made Muesli Recipe

1-2 heaped dessert spoons of Buck Wheat flakes (Its not wheat, despite the name but a seed that's been rolled.

Half a teaspoon of ground flaxseed

Quarter of a teaspoon of Chia Bia (optional) - Can be ordered from Holland and Barrett

A good pinch of ginger powder or cinnamon

1-2 Dates chopped

1 Dessert spoon of sultanas

1 Dessertspoon of sunflower seeds

1 Dessert spoon of pumpkin seeds

This is a recipe I made up myself and all the ingredients I use are organic, milk is lactose free semi skimmed, but any can be used.

Put all the ingredients in a breakfast bowl and mix, add milk - quite a lot – it will look like too much. Microwave for 2 mins, take out and stir and add more milk if needed. Pop back in the microwave for another 2 minutes and again add more milk if needed. Mix and its ready to eat, should look a bit like an uncooked cake mix.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Eat a banana mid morning and an apple every day after lunch. In fact eat lots of fruit and mixed nuts over the day. If I feel I haven't eaten enough fruit I resort to tinned apricots, peaches or pineapple in their own juice, eaten after dinner.

Avoid eating broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage.

I used to be the queen of wind - not very nice for a lady, but now have no problem at all. This cure works.

I think it might be related to the drugs..I, too, had a big increase in wind .. enough that I took ti the internet and dug around. I did find several stories saying that is is sort of a "secret" side effects of Eliquis.. that many people have reported this happening to them while on the drug. It seems related to me but maybe just one of those things that doesn't plague everyone? I just recently had to get back on the drug and sure enough wind has picked up! :) It can't be the beer because I don't get to drink that anymore. Darn it anyway...

thanks Banquo- it is a bit ridiculous but kind of hoping it will calm down.

Haha! I'm laughing because I hadn't given a thought to my morning trumpetting being drug related!

I start as soon as I get out of bed or sometimes even before! I've always had the potential to provide good sound effects after eating baked beans or sweetcorn but in their absence, I wondered what might be causing it. It also happens last thing at night when I make my final loo trip. As I bend to sit down on the seat I let rip!

Perhaps it is the Apixaban! I haven't always been like it and I was changed to Apixaban about a year ago which is when this all started, so it may well be.

Hooray! I can tell my poor husband that I can't help it - it's a side effect! He'll just have to go on listening to my music. 🤣 xx Moy

PS charcoal tablets may make it a bit more tolerable! I'll give them a go.

Hi MoyB,

There are worse side effects obvs but tbh I think the resulting wind is much more malodorous than it used to be as well, which is embarrassing, if not fatal (at least not to me, perhaps to my friendships..)

I don't think my husband's exactly thrilled either! However, he's been trumping for years and I've had to put up with it so maybe now is MY time!

I must admit, I sometimes have to hold on tight to it if I'm being given a lift by a friend and It's amazing how fast I can move now if I realise one's sneaked out eg at WI or my art group! 'Run like the wind' takes on a whole new meaning!

I've just seen your post about the charcoal knickers. I may have to investigate them. I keep having these strange thoughts about glowing embers keeping my nether regions warm in winter. I guess we wouldn't be lighting the charcoal, though. Shame! 🤣🤣

looked up charcoal tablets. This experiment seems to suggest charcoal knickers are the way to go..

And a search online reveals that flatulence absorbing underwear is indeed a thing. Who knew!

No but flecainide does- apparently it’s one of those “common side effects” in either 1 in 10 or 1 in 100 people! You have one problem so the drug companies seem quite happy to give you more!!
