Ct scan or MRI for AF.

I have an appointment with mt cardiologist tomorrow. I was offered a CT scan at my last appointment, however I asked to have MRI. I have concerns about radiation.

I am prepared to have done privately if he will agree.

Any feedback welcome.

Thanks to you all for your sharing.

Never offered a MRI but had CT scan first along with something else at the same time - can't remember what it was. This was done privately and cost all in all for all tests and scans about £620 about 6 years ago. At the time there wasn't a cardiologist and still no EP at our local hospital so just put on bisoprolol and apixaban by cardio nurse. Bisoprolol made me feel worse than the AF so had to find someone who could help. The consultant sent me straight in for the tests and scans from his consulting room so had to phone Benenden on the mobile to OK expenditure - now we do it from the outset so if anything like that happens we are ready.

An MRI will cost about £1,000 I would imagine with extras for various other things that may have to be added - like Doctors attendance to inject contrast dye if necessary. I belong to Benenden Health (£11.90 subs a month) so as long as I ask for permission to use them for the specific tests and tell them costs beforehand they will allow £1600 for diagnostic tests and pay the consultants fees too. Consultants usually charge anything between £150 and £300.

Thank you so much Desanthony. We are prepared for MRI costing, I have had a lot of CT scans for other health issues, the accumulation is quite high.

I hope the MRI heart will be agreed as an alternative.

I wish you well, and a big thank you.
