Amazon Smile closing...loss of funds to AF association

Not sure how much Amazon Smile donated to the AF association in total but I just got this....

Ten years ago, we launched AmazonSmile to make it easier for customers to support their favourite charities. However, since launch, the programme has not grown to create the impact that we had originally hoped.

AmazonSmile represents a very small portion of the total charitable contributions made through our other programmes, which we estimate at more than £100 million in 2021.

We are writing to let you know that we plan to wind down AmazonSmile by February 20, 2023. We will continue to pursue and invest in other programmes that we know will have more impact—from providing support to families in need, to using our logistics infrastructure and technology to assist communities impacted by natural disasters.

I didn't know that. My Amazon Smile is linked to St. Peter's Hospice, so that donation will be missed.

I wonder if it’s connected in some way with the tax issues

Sorry to say but knowing Amazon it's all about the $$$$$. I would have thought they make enough money to help support good causes a little. Jeff Bezos and Andy Jassy have a trillion-dollar empire and wouldn't bat an eyelid giving away a few million to charity through Smile.

Big business ethics - or lack of them.

Is "ethics" a synonym for "profits", there, Paul? The company is closing down some quite new facilities. too. A massive one near to Doncaster, apparently. I have a feeling the tide is just hinting at turning against a number of these greedy behemoths.

Wow really, the jobs will be missed . What would such a gigantic building be used for after? No Company would buy as not purpose built . Shelter the homeless maybe ? In one corner .

I wonder whether they are likely to be multi-use in the planning to cover the possibility of a future sale, maybe? I have no idea what became of it.

As well as Amazon I use the easy fundraising app that helps get donations from online purchases and at greater % rates and a bigger range of suppliers than Amazon. Even got a donation for my prepaid cremation.

I hadn't heard that we have given to various charities with this and presently give to Prostate Cancer UK. I'm sure that this will be missed at this time especially.

I have just found this thread and I got the same email from the giant Amazon.

This part is eyewash: 'the programme has not grown to create the impact that we had originally hoped' after which they go on to brag about the huge amount generated. It's either one or the other.

All charities are being squeezed by the cost of living crisis and I would have thought it's harsh for a company making billions to cut in this way.

God Amazon ! Is there another way to contribute to APS funds as well as direct contributions ?
