A Huge Thanks!

A big thanks to everyone for all the replies-they were greatly appreciated.   I had the bypass operation yesterday . My throat is as dry as sandpaper (from the tube)so I cannot speak to relatives  on the phone. Had a Quadruple bypass not a Triple! They said there were no special problems with the procedure. It’s not painful unless I move when it can be. Not allowed to walk a single step until tomorrow! I have a lot of tubes and an oxygen mask, but I am out of the ICU ward and in a “step down” ward. Appently , I was “very anxious” (which might be a a word for “delirious” ) when I awoke , so they sedated me again (possibly to avoid PTSD for several hours -although they didn’t say that) )The actual operation was 4 hours . I don’t remember anything about it. Although I have  had the op I am not out of danger. I see it has having jumped one of several hurdles with more to come. My atrium hasn’t enlarged and  so at the moment they are not suggesting  permanent AF (although they cannot say for sure). Even if you don’t have AF you can get it from the bypass op apparently). I’m on a “temporary pacemaker”-it showed  “underlying sinus rhythm “ when they looked at it  this morning  (what the heart would be doing if the pacemaker were not supporting it). It will take 24hrs for the anaesthetic to wear off. My memory is rather wonky but they suggest this should wear off in 24hours.  One positive thing - possibly the only one-to come out of this is that an AF ablation, which I be always been squeamish  about,  should be like a walk in the park!

So pleased it is over for you, now rest and recover.

Don't worry about whatever went on as you recovered from the anaesthetic, not your problem, and not unusual. If recovery room walls could talk there would be lots of interesting stories told.

Yes, there are lots of exercises I have to do too -it can take 2 or 3 months to get back to normal.

Glad all went well. The sore throat is normal and should get gradually better over the next few days. Hope your recovery goes smoothly.

So glad to hear you're recovering so well. The sore throat will go (you probably had a few tubes down there during the op!). AF is quite common after bypass surgery I think. My hubby had AF and was given drugs to get rid of it which worked. He too should have had a triple but the surgeon said "I might as well sort another bit of pipe out while I'm in there!".

Really good that you're posting a day after the op though!

Lots of love. Jan xxx

I think it’s incredible you can put together a post like that just a day after a major operation. Good luck with your recovery.

Good to hear all went well, particularly as I'm on the list for a valve repair. Look forward to hearing about your continued recovery....... onwards and upwards, said the gynaecologist 😁.Wishing you all the very best.😊.

Thanks but that's a bit odd. I've been told l'll be in ICU for a couple of days, then about a week on a normal ward and won't be allowed to leave until I can climb a flight of stairs to the surgeon's satisfaction. He's also going to do a Cox iv maze as well to hopefully tackle the AF as it's the AF which has caused the valve issue

I think there is a valve procedure which can be done through the groin for those who are not able to tolerate GA but mine will be open heart surgery as my surgeon does not like to rely on a camera and screen.

Perhaps the chap had the minimally invasive one.

It is odd. He told me it was an aortic valve replacement - on checking this requires an extensive hospital stay. Possibly he was having a tweak to an earlier procedure. I’ve deleted my original post on the grounds it may contain inaccurate information

May have been a TAVI for aortic, which is through the groin.

Glad to hear you are pulling through, did they do a Maze on the outside walls of your heart when you were on bypass? Ask if you don't know as this is usually what they do as standard procedure. Get well soon
