For those interested - additional recent research pointing to ablation as most appropriate 1st line treatment for afib (versus anti-arrythmics only).

What I've always said and what was reported here last week. Won't make much difference here in UK though.

What I would say is that first line of attack should be life style changes. There is absolutely no point in trying ablation on a 22 stone alcoholic!

I suppose that is not PC really these days but wholeheartedly agree.

Plenty of EPs subscribe to it.

Did you see the full study? I can only get as far as an abstract so I don’t know what the definition of “early” intervention is according to the study criteria.

Is from New England Journal of Medicine - Nov 7 2022. nejm.org/doi/pdf/0/NE...

This link will take you to the abstract but you can sign up for free access for a few articles if interested in full research report.

It reads like an advert for cryoablation, but I may be wrong...

Is from New England Journal of Medicine - Nov 7 2022. Is peer reviewed research not an advert for ablation in any way.

This is the abstract but you can sign up for free access for a few articles if interested in full research report. Cheers

New England Journal of Medicine is VERY credible, and a top of the line medical journal.

In 2013 my EP gave me the choice - go down meds route or go for ablation. This was when I was first diagnosed. I opted for ablation and although I am noticing the odd episode recently, in the main this was the right course for me.

I skimmed through the entire article, not just the abstract, but could not find the average age of study participants. My cardiologist emphasizes that the ablation success rate for his older patients is much lower than for his younger ones.

Hi.

No ,if you have an enlarged part of your heart!

I have been told 3 years after first diagnosis. Scan was done 1 year 6 months after stroke with AF and found with Papillary Thyroid Cancer. Removed 4 months later.

cheers JOY
