Ablation done today

Hi all - I hope you’re all well,

I got home earlier this evening after cryotherapy ablation this morning. All went well, I was as comfortable as I could have been, and the team caring for me were excellent. Unfortunately, half way through, I had an episode - first in almost a year. The EP used flecanaide which converted me, but also meant that he couldn’t test the effectiveness of the second half of the procedure. Therefore, we can’t be confident of the 75-80 % chance of not needing a second ablation as EP had originally said. Hey ho. Fingers crossed!

A couple of questions - I do have sinus issues, but why did my nose suddenly start running mid afternoon?

Also, I’ve had some pain/ discomfort at the front and sides of my neck. Seems to have settled now, but I wasn’t expecting it. Are these things connected to the procedure?

Many thanks in advance for all replies.

I know some people are having their ablations this week. Best of luck to you - you’ll be fine!

Lyn x

Possibly laying still . Cath labs are quite cold places . I have had heated pads under me to gaurd against being to cold. I guess you have read out fact sheets on recovery and know that all sorts of odd things can occur in the weeks and months after an ablation. Panic ye not but in doubt ring the arrhythmia nurse.

Well done! Yes neck and right shoulder hurt me after. I was very tense as I had no sedation and I think the combination of that and lying flat for so long caused it. The nose...no idea sorry! Now make sure you take it easy please!

Last time I was in the cath lab for a revision to my pacemaker I remembered how cold I had been for the ablations so remembered to ask for warmth, a preheated duvet type blanket appeared - very toastie I was so I wasn’t nearly as stiff after the procedure. Really does make all the difference. I would recommend anyone going into ablation to ask for heating pad as the lab is kept at very low temperatures to keep the machines cool.

Wishing you speedy recovery.

Thank you - I think you and BobD are right. I feel as if I’m full of cold. I struggled with the temperature all day.

Also lying still on your back will mean you don’t clear mucus well. I found nasal rinses very helpful in clearing mucus.

So pleased to hear that all went well.

Yes, always so cold in the cath labs. I mentioned it and they said we'll get you a blanket. Lovely I thought, but what I was given to cover me was a blue cotton thing more like a thick sheet, brr - that's what they call a blanket in hospital. I guess they're easier to wash than real blankets.

As others have suggested your neck pain will probably have been caused by lying flat for the procedure.

Wishing you a speedy recovery, don't forget to rest a lot in the first week or so.

So glad it went well! It’s such a scary thought, and mine is coming up mid December.

Thank you. It really isn’t worth all the worry and stress. Easy to say I know, but you’ll be in good hands who have done it all before so many times.

I had an AF episode during my ablation in 2015 the EP said that was good because it helped in locating the site of the electrical impulse signals. I haven't had an episode since. Hope it works for you

I think your aches and pains are probably from laying there so long. I remember feeling as if I had been bounced around a bit lol I was never cold because I was put out so quickly and slept through it all. It’s not unusual to need more than one ablation especially following cryo- not to be a bummer to you. I am not quite sure about the cryo- it seems not to be the answer as much as the other oblations and I was told it is a one shot deal. Mine lasted six months but it was a great six months and then I had an RF that lasted a year and a half. Those may not sound like long times but when you feel better it is wonderful. I just had a cardioversion a little over two weeks ago and feeling so good after five months of misery If I had to go back tomorrow I would do it again. Every ounce of freedom from AF I feel blessed. Please let us know how you are doing
