You may well have a vivid bruise but unlikely to be a problem.

thank you Bob for replying so quickly and positively. I just assumed that all hard knocks would be affected by Apixoban. Wish I could stop worrying about Apix and bleeding!

I had 2 very nasty falls in the weeks following hip replacement, one of them onto my face. I lay stunned waiting for the blood to pour from my nose but there was nothing although bruised in the morning! The second resulted in alot of bruising and quite dented my confidence. It brought home to me why a vast number of A&E visits are by oldies falling over! I'm on warfarin but very wary now. Ive never fallen over before!

thank you Jalia. that sounds awful.

because this was a hard knock to my back walking into a large chest of drawers ( I am very clumsy) my main concern is i may have damaged my kidneys which will then bleed. i think about bleeding from Apixoban all the time. not healthy but i can’t help it. thanks again for getting back

I think our kidneys are pretty well protected. Unless you have a serious car accident or severe fall, I dont think you have anything to be concerned about. Call your doctor's office for more information.

I practise balance exercises every day to improve my balance. I stand on one leg and swing my other leg in a scooter motion. It's a Pilates exercise I think. Also I stand on one leg for 60 seconds each side. Helps build muscles that support the ankles and feet. I'm 78, so need all the help I can get.😂

All the best.

I fell off my horse onto my head and neck. I had to go to A and E but there was no internal bleeding. I take Apixaban.

I am thanks. Neck hurts a bit where I broke two bones but I am very lucky to be walking and talking and eventually riding!

See my siggy? That's what I do, I'm 63, that photo was taken 6 months after my AVR. I've just been put on Apixaban, last week I fell out of bed, gave my head a real whack, went to A&E had a scan and fortunately no damage. It's good to hear from other horse riders.

I remember the same worries and concerns when I first started taking apixaban! One night I got out of bed and walked into the open Velux window which stuck out into the room and I got a real knock on the head. I immediately felt giddy and terrified this would result in bleeding in the brain! (Particularly as I suffered a stroke two years ago!) I should have not worried, it was fear that made me feel so terrible quickly afterwards and I soon felt ok. Although there are so many warnings on the medicine about bleeding and the need to 'change your lifestyle' to avoid injuries, knocks and cuts, unless you are particularly at risk for some other reason, just avoid obvious risks. It is really a very safe drug. The worst thing I suffer with it is bleeding at the dentist and mosquito bites causing bleeding on my arms and legs.

oh oscarfox i empathise with that one and the Velux as have couple of Vs in my loft and remember banging my head on open one 🥱. i have to stop reading negative comments about Apixoban referring to it as poison etc! thank you for getting back

Try to remember that the back has a lot of protective muscle. It not only protects the spine but other vital organs. The kidneys are pretty well enclosed and I think any knock would have to be very serious to damage them. I doubt the impact of what you describe would be sufficient to do harm.

How long have you been on Apixaban? Im asking because I think most of us ,when put on anticoagulants(not the silly term blood thinners( are prone to heightened awareness at first.

If the knock wasnt enough to set off to A n E if you were not on AC,that is the measure.

Always remember, the drug action is on the clotting process, slows that down but does not make you bleed madly more. It just takes longer to stop, and you bruise easily.

I fell in the garden went down like a sack of spuds, broke my shoulder so went to A n E as didnt know what I had done but obviously serious injury.

No worries there about internal bleeding ended up with bruising all dowm ribs lower back etc

Repeat after me' I will stop paying attention to dr google reports, and the like!'

Seriously ,try to think of apixaban as a real lifesaving friend ,and hope your back isnt too sore.x

Hi Wilson

actually been on Apixoban for 5 years or so. I dont think I'll ever get used to thinking about the bleeding issue of acs but on the other hand would not want to risk stroke. my back is not too bad today thank you, got a friend to look and its just scraped as opposed to bleeding, on the outside anyway. your shoulder much more serious and hope alright now. thank you for replying and nomore Dr. Google if I can help it!

don’t worry about your kidneys. They are covered and protected by at least an inch of fat (I know it’s an inch of something from when I had my kidney operation). Anyway you would very soon know if you had done any harm I assure you.

The only time to worry is if you crash your head. Then go to a&e for a check.

I was told that apixaban is the kindest anticoagulant especially for the brain snd gastro

All the best

I’m on Apixaban and have had a few knocks and falls but apart from some sometimes spectacular bruising, nothing else. We just need to be a bit more careful, especially as we get older

You can never be too carefall.

Wife had a fall end of August , cut her head open and we ended up at A&E. They dealt with head injury and sent her on her way. There was a lumpnon her leg but as ashe was walking on it they said it was ok. Week after that wife was experiencing a lot of pain in the leg. Turns out, after a visit to GP she'd bashed her leg hard enough to cause a haematoma right against her shin bone. It took 2 weeks for that pain to subside. Then she gets severe pains in her shoulder. Got so bad we went to A&E. Turns out she'd broken her shoulder in the original fall but the other distracting injuries made focus on those instead.

Shes now under the fracture clinic, in a sling for 3 weeks before she starts physiotherapy on the shoulder.

I am on Apixaban and a few months ago trapped my index finger in a heavy door. The fleshy cushion at the end of the finger was hanging off. The sight of it made me feel very faint :-( Of course, it bled profusely so my wife drove me straight to the local minor injuries unit in Rugby. I expected the nurses to be concerned about my Apixaban but it was very much "business as usual" for them. They cleaned it up, used adhesive "streristrips" to hold the wound closed and dressed it tightly. It took a while to heal but it certainly was not the disaster I feared.

I do use a medical alert bracelet when out and about just in case of a serious car accident, but are much more relaxed about taking Apixaban since that incident.

Good Luck

My wheelchair tipped backwards while going up too steep a ramp. I went down heavily onto concrete and ended up with a large lump on the back of my head. I had to wait an hour for an ambulance and was feeling dizzy and shivery. I was taken to hospital and my brain was scanned. There was no bleed. I am on Riveroxaban.

In the last 4 months, I've launched myself off a kerb landing on my knee and my shin had an argument with a plant pot. No open wounds but the swelling and bruising were a sight to behold (shin still recovering). After my ablation last year, my entire leg was bruised top to toe.

As my Dad used to say, I'm a little bleeder 😁.

Arnica cream is amazing for bruising but I wouldn't be overly concerned about it unless I bashed my head. In that circumstance, I would tootle down to A&E to get checked out.

I take Eliquis and when I fell and broke my hip, I had to be on a vacuum pump for a week in the hospital while I was recovering, because of the bleeding. It was a hard fall. What you describe doesn’t sound that bad, so most likely you are fine.

hi foxglove, I’m sure you’ll be fine. When I was on warfarin a few years back I took my off road motorcycle for a steady green lane spin but unfortunately I ended up going through a surface puddle that turned out to be actually 2ft deep and went straight over handlebars and I tumbled down the path.

I ended up bruised yes. But no other problems.

I later sold my bike after realising I was getting too old to be riding down old muddy paths.!!!

I find it interesting what causes bruises and what is not with a blood thinner. It’s also interesting that you may not see it right away. I fell one night in the parking lot and hit my shin on one of those things that you park at made of cement. At first it just hurt the next day I bruised from my foot to my thigh. Not pretty and it took weeks for it to go away. Sometimes my dog can step on me and bruise me and then other times things I expect to bruise me do not. You need to look at your back and see if you have a bruise. The one thing I’m sure I’ve learned about with a fib is that nothing is normal and we all seem to react to things in different ways. We can generally get an idea of things but you really can’t compare yourself to anyone else

Late to the party here. But yes have been on Eliquis for two years. Had a minor cyst removed from my knee surgically. It bled so much when I took the bandage off per doc orders had to go to minor emergency. From the event though I now keep blood clot bandages/ kits around because of the susceptibility of bleeding and have to be very careful with yard shears tools etc. But I have taken a fall or two on concrete and other than bruising I have not noticed anything different. Its getting cut or scrapped that seems to be the problem for me anyway. And not really that big a problem, just have band aids, bandages, dressing tape handy, plus clotting agent, if your active. Like the minor ER doc said, would you rather be off the meds and get a blood clot in your lungs and die? Hoping everything resolved ok for you.
