Tooth extraction

Hi, unfortunately I’m having a tooth removed on Wednesday morning. The dentist had advised not to take my morning 5mg apixiban dose which I’m happy to do as I’m not in AF having had a successful ablation. What experiences have members here had? Is missing one dose sufficient? Would appreciate some advice. Thanks

That is sufficient normally. I take warfarin and my dentist doesn't worry about me stopping unless INR above 3.

I omit the morning dose pre extraction then ask dentist after event if I should omit evening too. Last time was told no need to omit but I still did and dentist said it was good I had.

I had an extraction recently and was similarly advised to omit a single morning Apixaban dose before the extraction. The extraction was painless and I had no problems with bleeding. Or more accurately, the dentist had to scratch the area a few days later to restart bleeding to avoid the area drying out too much.

Thanks; another problem I hadn’t thought of! 😆I’m not looking forward to going at all. Don’t like the dentist at the best of times although she is great

I had a tooth extraction and my dentist told me to knock off the Apixaban for one day which I did, I had hardly any bleeding at all, much to my surprise, dentist just put a pad on the gum and said leave for an hour, all was fine after my worrying about it.So I think you need have no fears at all,the thought being worse than the deed.

Hi, I think you summed up my experience pretty well there. The thought of it was worse than the actual experience.

As I recall, I didn't have to stop at all but had to take it after the treatment, which was in the morning. All was well.

Same here. I'm in persistent AF, and had a fairly major extraction performed (needed hospital, not dentist).

I only omitted the morning 5mg Apixoban (op was in the afternoon I think), and had no problems at all with bleeding, merely mild bruising around the extraction site.

I’m on Edoxaban and the dentist was happy for me to continue taking it during a recent tooth extraction. I was worried about it so followed all the advice for after the extraction and was careful not to disturb the clot. I had no issues, a little weeping, but everything healed up fine. Hope it goes well for you.

Hello Johnny boy. I’ve had two teeth polled and implants and both times I did not come off of my Xarelto. Neither time did I have excessive bleeding. My dentist was OK with me not coming off of it because I basically told him that I wasn’t going to. My electro physicist advised me not to come off of mine unless absolutely necessary. I’m not willing to do so just to avoid inconvenience to the health provider.

Thanks. I’m not in AF at present so seems low risk

My periodontist asked my cardiologist to give his clearance for me to stop my eliquis for two days prior to, plus the day of, my periodontal surgery. There were no ill effects from that for me. Hope your dental visit goes well.

Hi! Just back from the dentist after my latest extraction Johnboy!😬 Because it was this morning I didn’t take my edoxaban (one a day)yesterday morning as well as this morning, but perhaps I should take one tonight…

Just wanted to say good luck. It’s horrible, I know!

I know and last night I hardly slept, worrying about it, but here I am now and the bleeding has stopped and I’m feeling much better.

Please tell me how it all goes tomorrow?

🤞

Hi, extraction complete with no issues, no pain and little bleeding. Probably helped that I had a shed load of anesthetic. Been given a list of instructions on how to manage the wound so we’ll see how it goes over the next few days

Great! What ever you do try really hard to keep that ‘plug’ in your socket undisturbed!

Will do. I’m not quite on a liquid diet but close to it😄

I take Xarelto (anticoagulant) and had to go off it two days before and the day of my tooth extraction. It caused no problems.

I had to have a wisdom tooth removed, where the root was fouling another tooth. My dentist refused point blank to remove it due to the rivaroxaban and I was referred to the local maxillo-facial clinic. The dentist there was scathing about the competence levels of what he called cosmetic dentists. He did not need me to stop the anti-coagulant.

I asked him about non-adrenaline anaesthetic as often recommended on here; he told me it would be counter productive. His opinion was that the adrenaline keeps the anaesthetic in place, so without it i would need a much higher dose, giving poor pain control and more stress, giving more risk of an AF attack. I'm not sure whether this is correct, but I was OK.

Thanks. I’ve been with my dentist for a long time and she’s been great throughout so I trust her to do a good job

I’ve had non Adrenalin anaesthetics for many yrs. they are not so common now. However if you get a reaction to the Adrenalin it’s very uncomfortable. I was very dizzy and unable to function for several hrs.

I get extractions at the dental hosp because of asthma and diabetes as well as successful cardio ablation.

The main use of Adrenalin in dental is to reduce bleeding. I’ve had no problems with bleeding despite rivaroxaban.

I’ve had adrenaline- free local anaesthetic for many years and never had a problem. It works perfectly ok and I’ve never had any pain. Adrenaline makes me feel dizzy and sick and also now it won’t go with my Sotalol, it’s a red flag drug.

I went and had 2 wisdom teeth removed and never even missed a dose of Eliquis and had no problem. The dentist said since I had no previous bleeding issues it would help prevent a dry socket.

Johnboy64 profile image
Johnboy64 in reply to riffjack846

Thanks riffjack846, I do sometimes get bleeding gums at the hygienist but she’s very thorough and enthusiastic when descaling etc (my mouth takes about a week to recover 😄) so I’ll give the morning tablet a miss I think
