Apprehensive !,
Hi, I’ve had lots of dental work and my dentist has always said to keep taking. Your dentist will know as they are used to the drugs we take. Take your advice from them. That said I have not had an extraction while on apixaban.
Just make sure you tell your dentist in advance and not wait until the day of the extraction. If they want you to hold Apixaban, not a bad idea to notify your afib doctor.

I continued with my anticoagulant when I had a back tooth extracted. My dentist's wife has a form of AF, so he is very understanding. You really need to find out from your own dentist what he wants you to do.

I was told by both the dentist and my GP to take my Apixaban as usual. I then bled for 12 hours after extraction as it wouldn't clot ....
3 days off for a colonoscopy...tooth extraction..i would expect the same
I've had two back teeth taken out - one planned and one emergency.
For the planned one I had an 8.15am appointment, held off until after the procedure with my Apixaban, dentist used haemostatic gauze to pack the socket (upper)and stitched it. No problems at all.
The emergency one was great fun - middle of the day, fully Apixabanned, tooth came out in bits, socket large (lower) but hardly any bleeding. I was terrified but all was OK.
Discuss this with your dentist in advance - most dentists have a protocol for dealing with anticoagulated patients. AF patients should consider have non-adrenaline anaesthics too. Best wishes.
ooh that sounds scary ! Glad it all settled down for you, times like this I just hate having AF makes everything so much more complicated !
We are all different but I haven’t had an AF episode for ages as taking regular flecainide has virtually stopped them so I stopped taking anticoagulants a while back and had a tooth extracted recently with no problem and things have healed up very well since. Unless you have an episode that goes on for a long time with a fast heart rate I was told that I was not at risk but you have to decide for yourself. Good luck and hope it goes as well for you as it did for me.
thank you ! I’m in permanent AF think I will have a chat with the dentist later today see what they recommend !
I presume your dentist will have been told you are on an anticoagulant already so I’m sure he will know how to deal with any bleeding that occurs. And “don’t panic”!
thank you for your reply ! I do usually get on with stuff but this has just got me a little worried ! Think I will have a nice cup of tea x
Hope it’s herbal! Isn’t ordinary tea supposed to be a no no for us? Do hope it all goes as well for you as it did for me. My pretty new dentist knew I had paroxysmal AF and asked about anticoagulants before he set to work so am sure yours will know what to do.
Yorkshire tea decaf of course !
Ah! Hadn’t heard of that but never much cared for proper tea, fortunately, except Earl Grey, and had been mostly having only herb teas for ages before my diagnosis.
Hi, You need to check apixaban, but also do you may need antibiotics, any kind of heart problem is at risk from tooth extraction bacteria, and also ask for non adrenalin anesthetic.
Yes I'm on it too and I have had three teeth out. You have to stop taking it for two days beforehand. You'll be fine. Take care
No need here...had two implants done didn't stop taking.
I know you have a lot of helpful advice but if you click on the link below it will take you directly to NICE guidance for managing all aspects of taking Apixaban. Just scroll down to the section relating to dental work. When I had a wisdom tooth removed, my dentist said it was unnecessary to stop taking the medication but I did miss the dose before the extraction. I had no problems and I’m sure you won’t either……good luck.

Hi
Had a tooth out in February. Hospital does this procedure for Afers. Or close to sinus space.
Dentist said keep taking but on PRADAXA x twice 110mg so I delayed morning one until 1 hr after procedure.
I was tod to take Augmentin as the tooth was infected.
cheers JOY. 74. (NZ)
I had a tooth out yesterday, a canine. At the same time I had two implants fitted. I had to skip apaxiban for two doses. I’m also on antibiotics for 7 days. I have paroxyl afib and in spite of being nervous & under a bit of trauma it didn’t trigger it. I am sure your dentist will advise you

I am on Eliquis too and had a tooth out with no issue.I didn’t have to stop it.I also had a 4 quardrent intense cleaning and I never had to stop my Eliquis.I take 5 mg 2x a day.
I had tooth extracted about February and just didn’t take Apixaban that morning. My then dentist knew NOTHING of my conditions or how to deal with them and looked on live! I was NOT impressed. Everything went ok
I've had 3 teeth out at different times. I'm on Edoxaban. Dentist has a list of my medications and I stopped my AC for 2 days. Socket packed and stitched just in case but no issues whatever. I have Afib and DCM.
