I take 2.5mg Bisoprolol for AF.Have taken for 4 years. This summer I have experienced extreme sun sensitivity on my face despite trying several different factor 50 sun lotions. It is making it difficult to even go for a walk without wearing a hat or keeping out of the sun completely which is not always practical. My face is burning again today and my exposure was minimal.Currently using Boots Factor 50 kids allergy sun lotion. Will talk to my GP but just wanted to see if this has been a problem for anyone else. Thanks in advance.

Bisoprolol and sun sensitivity
It is listed as an issue for some people and strong sunscreen advised but I don’t think it’s a common reaction.
I take 2.5mg bisopolol daily and have just spent 3 months in Dubai with a lot of time in the very hot sun and not had a problem, perhaps it just depends on the person.
Very unusual I would say for bisoprolol but we are all different.
Hi Bob,received a letter today from my GP advising me to change to Diltiazem. The dermatologist thinks it is likely that the Bisoprolol is causing my problem. From the research I have done it appears it is being recognised more now.I just hope things stay settled on Diltiazem. No doubt I will be back on here looking for advice from everyone.
Yes definitely speak to your GP.
Thanks for your replies everyone. I will speak to my GP to discuss where I go from here .My face is very sore after 30 minutes in mild sunshine wearing Factor 50.
I’ve had a phototoxic reaction to furosemide this year. GP says to still go out but use sunscreen, hat etc. But as you say, not always practical. That combined with the midges etc. biting me to bits…… been a good summer 😂
I’ve been on furosemide for about 18 months. But this summer it just kicked off. Now every time I go out into even a mildly sunny day I react. All started when I attended an outdoor wedding and was outside for about five hours with no chance of shelter……
Hi,
I’ve been taking bisoprolol for a year but I haven’t experienced that at all and I burn easily.
Are you on any other medication? i.e Anti coagulation?
Teresa
I've been taking Bisoprolol 2.5mg for about 4 yrs, too. I'm outdoorsy, and have always tanned (or 'weathered') deeply as summer progresses. However, during the first lockdown, when we had unusually fine spells of spring sunshine, I experienced several episodes of sunburn on my head (bald) and face. One of these was so bad that my face and scalp swelled and I looked like an alien visitor (according to my dear children!) for the best part of a week. Since then, I've had to be careful in the sun. Hadn't even considered that it may be related to any of the 8 meds that I take daily. It's not listed as a side-effect of Bisoprolol in the BNP, but who knows? All the best...
