betablocker before surgery

Hey everyone tomorrow I have my first surgery ever (not heart related).

My anesthesist told me I should take my bisoprolol 1.25mg in the morning before entering the clinic but I'm scared to do this because I read some articles that it could lead to adrenaline not responding when given in anesthesia when it is needed.

After all these stories I'm very worried to take it in the morning.

I take bisoprolol for over 7 years now due to extreme anxiety attacks under a cardiologist supervision.

I would also not that I have a past of hypochondria

They call it health anxiety these days. Your anaesthetist understands these things far better than anybody here does so please do as they say.

Your anaesthetist knows best and the amount of Bisoprolol you're taking is a very small dose. I took my beta blocker pill the morning before I had a GA a few months ago.

Best wishes.

You should do as you anaesthetist has told you. He is the expert. Before major surgery my cardiologist told me to take double dose of beta blocker and tell the anaesthetist so that he knows why my heart rate is low. This was to try and avoid AF whilst under. I was fine.

I would do exactly what my doctor told me to do, most especially the anaesthetist who is an expert in his sphere.

My first ever stay in hospital was for my ablation for atrial flutter in 2019, under general anaesthetic. I can fully sympathise with how you feel, but, as with me, all will be well as you are in excellent hands.

I went one further and (with the anaesthetist's knowledge and approval) took a dose of flecainide as well. It was essential I had the surgery and I was so worried that I might have AF when under. In the event, all was well.

You must not worry about this. What you have read might refer to the past common practice of giving a beta blocker before surgery to those who were not on beta blockers for a recognised condition This was found to not be helpful and was discontinued.

If you were told to take it, then take it.

HiBisoprolol is a beta blocker. It does two things helps the AF rythmn and lowers H/R. But not alot for me. 30 H/R per minute.

I took mine as usual night before and CCB Diltiazem early. 5am Synthroid - no thyroid. 7am Diltiazem.

No Anti-coagulant for 3 clear days.

Operation 1pm.

But I have AF and the above keeps my H/R below 100.

I had 2 Anthaestists and 1 Dr to help Surgeon very experienced. 1 hr G/A with anti-sickness.

All went well and catheter removed next morning and went home via taxi at 2pm 24 hrs after g/a.

With Covid it is best to get out a.s.a.p.
