Anyone had experience with having to take doxycycline for 3 weeks? Am two weeks into the course and my heart has been all over the place and bp down to 115/55 with no bp pills. Gone v pale and am having to supplement with extra iron but not within 2-3hours of the doxycycline. Any advice please?

Took it for tick bite with bullseye rash for presumed Lyme disease this spring..had no abnormal heart rythyms..did not monitor my BP, but had no symptoms relating to abnormally high or low BP. Side effects were metallic taste, dyspepsia and occasional diarrhea. Took it for 2 weeks, 200mg twice daily. etheral

I too am taking it for a tick bite with bullseye and am taking 100mg x 2 daily for 3 weeks so it seems I am taking half the dose for longer. On the other hand I am only around 47 kilos. Did it completely stop the Lyme’s in your case? How soon after the actual bite did they give you the Doxycycline. Took them 4 days in my case.

I live in South Africa and Biliary (tick bite fever) is common in our dogs, especially if you train them for working trials e.g tracking through bush, and the usual treatment unless you let it progress to the stage when blood transfusions and drips are required, is Doxycycline for the dog- that is the only time I had ever seen it prescribed, humans with tick bite fever, were treated with another drug of the same or similar family. When staying with my sister in the UK (pre lock down) I picked up a chest infection and the practice nurse prescribed Doxycycline. I was a bit better but as soon as I got home, I consulted my regular GP, she laughed and said she only ever prescribes it for Acne! I laughed too, not only am I well past the acne stage, I have never had it in my life !

Thanks for replying. I too am well past the acne stage but am pleased that I won’t be suddenly getting it. Something for which to be thankful!

I had it prescribed for a bulls eye tick bite in 2014, which cleared it up. This occurred 4 months AFTER my AF diagnosis. Felt very unsettled but may have been all the AF & Lymes anxiety. Shortly afterwards my London Naturopath prescribed Nutri Mega Mag Muscleze and Co Q10 for my AF and started to feel better; might have been a coincidence as that was 4 months after Flecainide was prescribed and my body maybe needed the time to adjust. Anyways the whole thing stopped my AF.

I have been taking CoQ10 and Mag L-threonate/taurate/bisglycinate for years. What sort of Max is in your Nutri Muscleze?

So pleased to hear it. I am prone to anaemia because of lack of stomach acid and have noticed that I need to up my iron since taking the doxycycline because when I pull my lower eyelid down it is very pale. My heart is bad in the first place because I was prescribed Omeprazole a number of years ago and that lowered my stomach acid to unacceptable levels. This meant I could not digest protein and get the iron i needed to make the haemoglobin for my red blood cells to work properly - hence anaemia - hence bad heart having to work too hard for too long. Had to self diagnose in the end and then the light went on in the doctor’s head and got prescribed a year long intensive iron and I now have 3 weekly holding doses. I have upped that now but need to take it at least two hours away from the doxycycline.

My heart trace the other day was really really dreadful but it is better, although not at all right now. Had no idea who to show it to or who to call. 111 would just have sent me to A&E and with all this covid I was scare to do so. Anyway it has settled rather into its usual bad trace so am no longer worried about it.

Hi

I was on Doxycycline when I had a stroke with AF.

I never connected Doxycycline with AF.

I took it for 9 months as I suffered vaginitis and urine infections.

I stopped again in March 2019 when I started it again due to above and examinations for pelvic in October 2021 and had Johnson & Johnson mesh and partial removal of TVT Kit.

Do you think Doxycycline causes AF?

Used for urine infections and skin lesions.

Interesting.

Not on it now.

I actually regained energy soon after operation above but it may have coincided with stopping the Doxycycline.

cheers JOY 73 (NZ)

I really don’t know but I cannot wait to come off it next week. It certainly can be difficult to take for some people. Doctor friend of mine and her sister were affected so badly they had to stop taking it. It could have been the Lyme’s which it was fighting or the drug combined with the lowering of my iron that set my heart going in a ridiculous fashion. It was so completely irregular and random that it is a wonder I was still functioning. It is back to my usual A/F but has lowered my bp to a silly level - at one stage this morning diastolic 40 and systolic got down to 100 which for me is not good. I am usually fighting to keep my bp down not up.If your bp was very low, which is a side effect of the drug, then I am not surprised your energy level was not normal for you.

Glad you are OK now.

I was prescribed doxycycline last year after what appeared to be a tick bite. The pharmacist caught interactions with my meds (digoxin, xarelto and metoprolol). I was given amoxicillin instead. Maybe some interactions are causing your problems with this drug.
