Rivaroxiban -anyone have side effects?

I started on apixaban in January for AF but this was discontinued due to side effects of extreme aches snd pains and muscle weakness. I started on rivaroxiban 2 nights ago and have woken both mornings with a headache and also had a nosebleed, only slight, in bed last night. I have had a recent middle ear infection snd the pressure ruptured my eardrum so quite deaf on one side at mo, the side of the headache. I’m wondering though if it’s the meds and asking if anyone else has had any side effects from rivaroxiban please. My blood pressure is snd has always been fine. Thanks in anticipation ❤️ (The pic is Bingo my fox, just thought I’d share it) 🦊

Hi, love the photo. What a handsome fox.I’ve been on Rivaroxaban for around six months now with no ill effects. I take 20mg each day. Hope things improve for you soon but do speak to your doctor if you’re concerned. Xxx

Thank you for your reply. I’ve got a review in couple weeks so I’ll monitor the headache, could be ear doing it. Thank you re foxy, he is beautiful, he ‘adopted’ me a couple years ago and turns up for breakfast and tea and lounges on the lawn in the sun! ❤️

Firstly - what a beauty Bingo is! Secondly, I had nosebleeds when I started rivaroxaban but not until a couple of months into taking it. I got referred to ENT, but by the time the appointment came round, I hadn’t had any nosebleeds for months 🤣 They we’re random, started suddenly, last about 10/15 min then stop. If I recall, I think I was waking up with a thick head, almost a headache, but that passed quickly. Hope that helps! X

Thank you for your reply snd comments on Bingo! That’s encouraging, sorry you had nosebleeds and thick head but it helps me to not worry and hopefully pass like yours did. Take care ❤️

I too had side effects on Apixaban. I also tried Pradaxa but couldn’t take that. I’ve been on Xarelto for about 3 years without any issues.

in reply toKaz747

Thank you for your reply. I’ll monitor it and got review next week. ❤️

I’m sorry, I can’t help you regarding the anticoagulant as I’m not on one yet but I just wanted to say what a beautiful fox! He looks to be in excellent condition and clearly benefits from the food you put out for him!

in reply toThreecats

Thank you for your reply. Yes, he’s a healthy looking chap and seems to enjoy my garden and his food here. I know I can’t stop now but have no desire to as I enjoy his company, almost as much as he enjoys Yorkshire puddings!🦊 His presence can only have a positive effect on my heart snd blood pressure. ❤️

Completely agree with you. There’s nothing more thrilling in my book than seeing a wild creature that has chosen to spend time in our environment. Years ago there used to be a fox that set up home in some rough ground just beyond my garden. The cubs used to play on the lawn, a beautiful sight. With Yorkshire puds on the menu, your chap sounds like an eminently sensible fox to me😊

Hi, love the fox..

I have had seriously debilitating muscle weakness on Edoxaban and similarly Rivaroxaban. I tried both for long periods....the Edoxaban 18 months. I will try Pradaxa but having just been diagnosed with late onset Asthma...in my 70s....I am not risking adding a bad side effect whilst newly having meds for that . I did feel that my reaction to the DOAC s was unusual and few people seemed to have had anything similar. I can assure you that I did...and stopping each kept me out of a wheelchair. Not good.

I can only put my asthma down to a reaction to the Pfizer booster vaccine....but will never know. We ALL react differently to medication. If the side effcts stop when you stop the meds......

I have asymptomatic AF....only diagnosed at a blood pressure review some years ago now.

Best wishes.

Thank you for your reply. Apixaban almost made me wheelchair bound, I know exactly what you mean. Today is 3rd day on rivaroxiban and no headache so I’ll continue to monitor. There’s a lot of new asthma around, I think the masks came off and our lungs are all now in a state of shock! Take care ❤️

Interesting reply thanks. Asthma very accute. A and E twice before a measure of management from the incredibly inaccessible overstretched GP. Never tested positive for Covid. A rather scary learning curve. !

in reply toofftherecord

Hope asthma stays under control. Heart and lungs work very closely, not just anatomically close but physiologically, wishing u well ❤️

Beautiful fox. Yes I had side effects from both noacs. Hair loss and bleeding resulting in anemia. Some of us seem to be affected whereas others are fine on them.

in reply toWindlepoons

Thank you. Yes, I think I’m getting the aches snd pains again on rivaroxiban. I’ll give it til end of week. Take care ❤️

I’ve been on 20mg Rivaroxaban since April 2021 and I’ve had no side effects at all. I had an ablation in October and may need a top up so still on them until a decision is made.

Thank you for reply wishing u well ❤️

I'm on rivaroxaban. It makes me feel a bit dizzy and unstable on my feet. Also joint stiffness. I'm pretty sure it's the rivaroxaban as I'm not too bad in the morning when I take the pill but then gets worse round lunchtime and eases off in the evening. I've also tried apixaban but that was even worse for dizziness. There was another thread where someone mentioned their GP practice was taking people off rivaroxaban ? I've got a 6 month review coming up in June so I'm going to mention the dizziness to the cardiologist. But I'm not sure there are too many other options as I've already tried apixaban. Maybe edoxaban?

in reply todunestar

Thank you for reply. I’m really achey until mid afternoon since taking rivaroxiban at teatime. I’m waiting blood results at mo and since no AF since January I’m hoping they may not be necessary if no other risks revealed ie diabetes etc. Take care ❤️

I was on 20mg Riveroxaban daily for a few years and it was reduced to 15 mg a few months’ ago. It was after some blood tests so I assume something untoward might have shown up but no explanation was given just a text I think to say it was being reduced. As far as I know, I have no side effects from it but with the cocktail of things I now take, it is hard to know what might be causing what. I was very resistant to taking it at first, along with anything else, as I thought it thinned the blood but it is an anticoagulant as has been pointed out in this forum umpteen times and when I have had a small injury causing bleeding, it does not seem to bleed any more profusely than before I started taking it. Beautiful fox btw.

in reply toCrystalbowl

Ty re: fox. Thanks for reply. Maybe I need dose reduced. I’m on 20mg. Take care ❤️

I have been on rivaroxiban for six and a half years with no side effects. Other drugs l have to take l get quite bad side effects from. I have never had a problem with anticoagulants.

in reply toDollcollector

That’s excellent, it’s a minefield of meds out there. Thank you for reply. Take care ❤️

I've had some nose bleeds. But they may not be related to Xarelto I'm taking.

in reply toPengieP

Thank you for reply. I had loads of nosebleeds as a child but now had odd one or two on noacs. Only one nostril at a time though which is the good thing. Take care ❤️

I’m taking Apixaban and for the last 2 weeks had the most unbelievably stiff neck, constant head ache. Hip and back ache. I’ve had 2 strenuous osteopathic treatments that usually sorts any aches but never had such stiff neck resistant to treatment. Still have the stiff neck and headache

Any ideas?

in reply toLaceyLady

I’m sorry to hear that. It’s similar to what I had on that drug. It got so bad I took ages to stand up and was shuffling around in pain, couldn’t do bra up due to shoulder and hand pain and ached more in the morning than at bedtime. I may be the apixaban, have a review. Take care❤️

GP just rang due to abnormal blood results. I mentioned the headaches/nosebleeds/aches etc so I’m to stop rivaroxiban and been rereferred to cardiologist. Also referred to rheumatologist as rheumatoid factor extremely elevated. VitD in my boots. Explains a lot but maybe it’s not the anticoagulants causing the extreme pain. Have to wait snd see. At least I can take an ibuprofen or two while I wait for review. ❤️

I really enjoyed the picture. I have taken Xarelto for a while now when I developed Afib. I don't seem to have any side effects. I do take a plethora of drugs, though. Pacerone is the worst offender. I did develop severe anemia. I had all the testing without a cause found. Each Dr. says ask the other and It is still not diagnosed. So be on the lookout for obvious blood loss and have them check hemoglobin on a regular basis to catch it early. It can be occult they say. Otherwise I don't worry so much. What's the alternative? It was nice to see a picture of your furry friend.

in reply toElfiejean

Thank you for reply. I suppose warfarin would be alternative, can’t take aspirin and don’t know if clopidogrel would be indicated in AF? I’ll see what cardiologist says. Take care ❤️
