Unreal but true - so fed up

Paulbounce profile image
137 Replies

Yesterday I slipped on the grass taking a short cut. Landed on the road smashing my glasses and a massive cut on my head. An amulance was called due to the bleeding which is down to the anticoagoants. I've spent the last 24 hours in hospital having stitches put in. However I can't take my anticoagonats due to this - I would likey have a bleed out. This of course means my cv is now put back.

I am so fed up - tell you what folks - don't fall on anticoagonts. Take care what you do. The bleeding won't stop - it's slowed down but my cv is put back. The bleeding was very bad, The doctor stitched me up but I look like something from the rocky horror show right now.

Be carefull if you have a CV coming and don't fall - if you do dial 999 on the spot if you are on a 'thinner'.

The ambulance came pretty quick and I was checked by the crew. Good on them. Could have saved my life. I have to give them a 10 out 10, They were amazing and turned everything off in my digs and locked the door.

They were incedible, They might have saved my life - serious.

Thanks girls.

Paul

I am so sorry to you fell. I did the same thing a few weeks ago. Fractured rib and possibly cheek bone. Still crying from that eye. 😢

There are waiting lists for TOE (what our cardiac team calls them) procedures as well and I wouldn't think they would do one for an elective DCCV , may be for an emergency one, when the cheaper, less invasive option is to wait for a month. I have a TOE booked for next month, for a valve issue, which will be a 4 month wait. I missed a solitary dose of Apixaban last year which put back my DCCV about a month so a shorter wait.

Hi Paul, what a bummer! I’m so sorry to hear about your fall and the fact your cv has been pushed back. How frustrating for you as I know you’ve been waiting a while for that. I’m glad the paramedics strong-armed you into the ambulance though😊 Hospital was where you needed to go as that sounded like a nasty head injury.

My mum and I were out walking on a narrow path through a wood a few years back when a huge Wolfhound came flying past, knocked mum for six and she hit her head against a tree branch. That turned out to be a small wound but the amount of blood was unbelievable as she is on Wafarin, so I can imagine the state you must be in!

Take it easy and I hope you’ll be able to restart your anticoagulants soon so you can get your cv back on track. Take care, TC

Paulbounce profile image
Paulbounce in reply toThreecats

Thanks TC. I'll keep off them today and will start again tomorrow. There was some pretty heavey bleeding on.

Paul

Threecats profile image
Threecats in reply toPaulbounce

I can imagine! When I commented on it to the nurse treating mum she said it’s because the scalp is highly vascularised, apparently, so wounds tend to bleed spectacularly! Hoping things have settled down for you today.

Paulbounce profile image
Paulbounce in reply toThreecats

Thanks TC. I'm keeping off my anticoaglants today. I look a right mess but it will pass. The doc said 10 days for the stitches to be removed. One things for sure - I don't think I'll get a date for a few day's. I look like Freddy Krueger on a good day lol.

I can confirm that. 20 years ago my then 8 year old helped me unload the shopping from the car and decided he would shut the hatchback of the car by jumping up off the bumper to slam it down. Unfortunately I bent down to retrieve something else and he slammed it on my head. Laid me out for a few seconds but the amount of blood squirting out seemed very large and would not stop. I thought he must have cracked my skull. I was sat in A&E and I jumped the queue as I was making such a mess bleeding on the floor they took me to the front! And it only actually needed ONE stitch! I was not on A/C. Scalps DO bleed badly anyway. I hope your wound heals up soon Paul and you get your CV. Best wishes

Suebo2 profile image

No worries, not an incorrect assumption

I think that he was meaning that the bleeding was more than usual. Wounds in heads bleed a lot but in reality are the easiest to stop as one can use pressure.

What a bummer. I have to say that I don’t find my bleeding is worse it may take a little longer to stop but only marginally. I have had a couple of bad cuts requiring stitches (when putting up and insulating my shed a few years ago) but the bleeding sid stop my worst problem with anticoagulants is bruising as I bruise so easily now and often look down at a bruise and wonder what the heck I have done. Same thing happened to me my dog pulled me over hit head on curb fell on my back massive gash on my arm now indoors for two weeks. Ambulance didn’t turn up so friend took me to A&E I was there 6 hours before I saw anyone and kept sitting in wheelchair with bleeding arm till 6.30 am the next day, I sent friend home. On Edoxaban so bled easily still having it dressed twice a week. Still very bad back.I agree be extra careful don’t fall, the worse part was sitting in A&E. I tripped a couple of weeks ago and fell on my side - to my horror I had a large skin flap on my knee. I live alone so I pushed it back and applied pressure and fortunately stopped the bleeding - I then phoned my GP practice and drove straight there where a young doctor was on duty and she stitched it (not a good idea with fragile geriatric skin, anyhow I got the anti biotic and anti tetanus I needed, and it is now healed (it would have healed quicker without the sutures and some steri strips). It did not bleed all that much and I'm hoping it's because head wounds always bleed more than knees and not because the Xarelto I diligently take, is not working !

Paulbounce profile image
Paulbounce in reply topusillanimous

Good luck with it Pusil. Why do say the Xarelto is not working ? Maybe have a chat to your GP ?

pusillanimous profile image
pusillanimous in reply toPaulbounce

Because I did not bleed as terribly as you did and was able to staunch the bleeding with the flap back in place by applying pressure for 10 minutes, otherwise I have no reason to doubt it's effectiveness- I remember as a child constantly scraping and bashing my knees, but there was never a lot of bleeding, but beautiful scabs to pick off - had a scab this time because the sutures had to come out and there was a section that had not fully closed (the stitching caused more trauma than the wound !!) and I've had a lovely time slowly picking it off !! (little things please little minds , I suppose).

Sorry for your woes Paul 😑 no fun indeed. As far as bleeding and anticoagulants are concerned, maybe everyone reacts differently depending on type and dosage?

I was initially extremely worried after my BIL told me if the precautions he had to take as he is on warfarin, and many of the comments on this forum.

I being a very active person, and prone to cuts and bruises, I knew the inevitable would happen. Took a header on my mountain bike, and bounced off a large granite boulder leaving a nasty gash. It bled profusely for a bit, but after I cleaned and bandaged it , it settled Donne and stopped. I carried on without anymore leakage, and it healed fine. I’ve had other nicks and cuts that healed well, so Im wondering if it’s the meds/dosage? I’m on 20mg Xeralto once daily.

Maybe next time...“just a jump to the left”? 😏

Isn’t it silly the way one thing leads to another? The blood thinner effect should wear off fairly quickly surely. I have to take apixaban twice a day which means that some of the effect must wear off after 12 hours or so. Mind you i was told by the doctor that in case of a real trauma all they can do is to make me comfortable while I bleed. Not a lot of consolation. I don't know what a CV is? Not sure why, but I've had some bleeding episodes, and I've taken warfarin for over 12 years, it may have been a bit slow to stop but it's always stopped. Maybe your dose is too high? My target range for INR is 2.5-3.5 and it seems to be ok if I have any bleeding.

Just at the moment I don't want the bleeding to start again as it can be really bad - serious stuff. I've put an old shirt on my bed and it's covered in blood. That's without taking the anticoagilants. I just feel until I get the stitches taken out (and things heal) I'm keeping off them. That's my pick I know - my chad score is zero but who knows. I don't want to start on them again tonight as I know will happen.

I want to add this to the thread for those on anticoagilants. I'm not a medic so this is just my choice. Don't stop taking them without discussing it first without talking to your doctor. I know what will happen if I start again so I'll leave it a few more days. However you MUST talk to your doctor should the same happen to you. This is my personal decsion as an adult but it might not be right for you. My Chad score is 0 which is the only reason I'm chancing this. I don't want to bleed out again but the quicker I can start taking them again the better.
