Yesterday I slipped on the grass taking a short cut. Landed on the road smashing my glasses and a massive cut on my head. An amulance was called due to the bleeding which is down to the anticoagoants. I've spent the last 24 hours in hospital having stitches put in. However I can't take my anticoagonats due to this - I would likey have a bleed out. This of course means my cv is now put back.
I am so fed up - tell you what folks - don't fall on anticoagonts. Take care what you do. The bleeding won't stop - it's slowed down but my cv is put back. The bleeding was very bad, The doctor stitched me up but I look like something from the rocky horror show right now.
Be carefull if you have a CV coming and don't fall - if you do dial 999 on the spot if you are on a 'thinner'.
The ambulance came pretty quick and I was checked by the crew. Good on them. Could have saved my life. I have to give them a 10 out 10, They were amazing and turned everything off in my digs and locked the door.
They were incedible, They might have saved my life - serious.
Thanks girls.
Paul

Ouch. Not good. So sorry. Bet you have an interesting bruise. Don’t think they do anything for a fractured rib so you just have to wait for it to heal - is that right? Good luck
Hope you feel better soon and dont have too long to wait for your next appt Paul. See my reply to etheral. I think it would be unlikely that they would do a TOE.☹.
There are waiting lists for TOE (what our cardiac team calls them) procedures as well and I wouldn't think they would do one for an elective DCCV , may be for an emergency one, when the cheaper, less invasive option is to wait for a month. I have a TOE booked for next month, for a valve issue, which will be a 4 month wait. I missed a solitary dose of Apixaban last year which put back my DCCV about a month so a shorter wait.
Hi Paul, what a bummer! I’m so sorry to hear about your fall and the fact your cv has been pushed back. How frustrating for you as I know you’ve been waiting a while for that. I’m glad the paramedics strong-armed you into the ambulance though😊 Hospital was where you needed to go as that sounded like a nasty head injury.
My mum and I were out walking on a narrow path through a wood a few years back when a huge Wolfhound came flying past, knocked mum for six and she hit her head against a tree branch. That turned out to be a small wound but the amount of blood was unbelievable as she is on Wafarin, so I can imagine the state you must be in!
Take it easy and I hope you’ll be able to restart your anticoagulants soon so you can get your cv back on track. Take care, TC
I can imagine! When I commented on it to the nurse treating mum she said it’s because the scalp is highly vascularised, apparently, so wounds tend to bleed spectacularly! Hoping things have settled down for you today.
Thanks TC. I'm keeping off my anticoaglants today. I look a right mess but it will pass. The doc said 10 days for the stitches to be removed. One things for sure - I don't think I'll get a date for a few day's. I look like Freddy Krueger on a good day lol.
I can confirm that. 20 years ago my then 8 year old helped me unload the shopping from the car and decided he would shut the hatchback of the car by jumping up off the bumper to slam it down. Unfortunately I bent down to retrieve something else and he slammed it on my head. Laid me out for a few seconds but the amount of blood squirting out seemed very large and would not stop. I thought he must have cracked my skull. I was sat in A&E and I jumped the queue as I was making such a mess bleeding on the floor they took me to the front! And it only actually needed ONE stitch! I was not on A/C. Scalps DO bleed badly anyway. I hope your wound heals up soon Paul and you get your CV. Best wishes
I think that he was meaning that the bleeding was more than usual. Wounds in heads bleed a lot but in reality are the easiest to stop as one can use pressure.
Hi Paul, sorry to hear about your fall, a cautionary tale to us all. Hope you didn’t suggest some mouth to mouth resuscitation just in case 😉. Did the hospital postpone the CV? Hopefully you will not have to wait too long……
The truth is-blood thinners do NOT make your blood thinner, they merely delay clotting. But we talk about ‘blood thinners’ as this is a simple way to try and explain what the tablets do. Don’t want yo get involved with discussing the ‘clotting cascade’ 😉😉😉
What a bummer. I have to say that I don’t find my bleeding is worse it may take a little longer to stop but only marginally. I have had a couple of bad cuts requiring stitches (when putting up and insulating my shed a few years ago) but the bleeding sid stop my worst problem with anticoagulants is bruising as I bruise so easily now and often look down at a bruise and wonder what the heck I have done. I am going to start telling people that my wife beats me up 🤣
After the cut it took an hour,to stop second day it was worse. When I had something done the blood spurted out, surprise it went back too normal. Everyone is different.
Hi Paul. So very very sorry to hear this. But so so so hugely pleased that you are here to tell the tale. As usual you think of others. I shall be sure to take care when walking out. Thank goodness those “girls”were strong women who did not take your “ I’m not going to Hospital” stuff seriously, pushed you into the ambulance and, as you say, perhaps saved your life. So a lesson learned but what a nasty way to have to learn it. Now Paul, the man with the ability to bounce back, take very good care of yourself. I do hope you are able to have the CV soon.
Oooh Paul, so sorry to hear about this! I remember my nose bleed that wouldn't stop it's just horrid isn't it, but you had a highlight to your day with 3 lady paramedics turning up - every cloud has a silver lining! 😃 😃 🤕
Heheh Jean. 3 ladies turning up was nice. Under different circumstances I would be delighted - however not this time. Will keep off dabigatran today - I look like a right wally ath moment with this thing stuck on my head. Need to go to shop but worried incase I fall again.
However what do I always say - strong mental attutide wins everytime.
What makes you think you'll fall again? You haven't fallen before have you? Keep off the grass and you should be ok. Do you have dissolving stitches or do you need to have them taken out?
Thanks Jean - Stitches have to be taken out by the nurse. I doubt I'll fall again but just on edge. Tell you what I'll have forgotten about it this time next week
Hi Paul, so sorry but hooray for the girls! Mr Buff recently had a very big op and needed carers to help him wash for a couple of weeks. He stripped off and washed like a lamb for Yveta, Sharon and Karolina etc but for me now he’s able to do it himself he just tells me to get lost 😒 Head wounds are notorious for bleeding excessively but apparently it’s the bangs that don’t bleed that you have to be very careful about.
Oh Paul. Maybe you ought to change your username to Paul Didn't Bounce! As the song says "thank 'Evans for Leetle Girls" who had the forsight to pack you off to A & E.
I hope you recover soon and keep your sense of humour.
Same thing happened to me my dog pulled me over hit head on curb fell on my back massive gash on my arm now indoors for two weeks. Ambulance didn’t turn up so friend took me to A&E I was there 6 hours before I saw anyone and kept sitting in wheelchair with bleeding arm till 6.30 am the next day, I sent friend home. On Edoxaban so bled easily still having it dressed twice a week. Still very bad back.I agree be extra careful don’t fall, the worse part was sitting in A&E. No hot drink nothing to eat couldn’t get out of wheelchair. My god it was awful. I imagine it would put people off going if they experienced what I did, which is a little worrying.
What a horrible experience. Unfortunately these things happen. Hope the arm heals pretty soon. Bad backs are nasty things. Hopefully you found someone to look after the dog for you. Good luck
I tripped a couple of weeks ago and fell on my side - to my horror I had a large skin flap on my knee. I live alone so I pushed it back and applied pressure and fortunately stopped the bleeding - I then phoned my GP practice and drove straight there where a young doctor was on duty and she stitched it (not a good idea with fragile geriatric skin, anyhow I got the anti biotic and anti tetanus I needed, and it is now healed (it would have healed quicker without the sutures and some steri strips). It did not bleed all that much and I'm hoping it's because head wounds always bleed more than knees and not because the Xarelto I diligently take, is not working !
Because I did not bleed as terribly as you did and was able to staunch the bleeding with the flap back in place by applying pressure for 10 minutes, otherwise I have no reason to doubt it's effectiveness- I remember as a child constantly scraping and bashing my knees, but there was never a lot of bleeding, but beautiful scabs to pick off - had a scab this time because the sutures had to come out and there was a section that had not fully closed (the stitching caused more trauma than the wound !!) and I've had a lovely time slowly picking it off !! (little things please little minds , I suppose).
Oh Paul!! You're always so positive and kind towards others, thank goodness you got some firm kindness in return. When the paramedics insist you go in, they know what they're doing. Guessing you live solo so that would've been a factor. All hail paramedics in opinion- they're amazing. You'll get over this, heal and have your CV. It's spring - a bit cold - but something to look forward to.Be well!
Thanks Tracy. Bit shaken up but I'll live. It will heal but when I changed the dressing today I can see why they sent me to hospital ! All stitched up now so be as right as rain in a few weeks
OMG!!! Sod it! What a bummer. Paul I'm so sorry to read this .
Yes at times women can cut through waffly nonsense and take charge with no arguing taken. Good for them not standing for you faffing about, whilst bleeding for Britain!
Joking aside, I hope you heal quickly and then back on plan asap.
I am accident prone myself, known as Dangerous Dawn in my social circles, breaking my shoulder last March falling over a leaf in the garden( basically!) so I recognise your frustration as it chucked me onto medical deferred list for ablation.
You'll get that CV by hook or jy crook....
Keep your chin up and try not to get too down, easy to say hut ....😘
Thanks Dawn. The 3 girls all ganged up on and wouldn't take no for an answer. Looking back it's a good job they did ! You don't argue with 3 lasses lol.
Sorry for your woes Paul 😑 no fun indeed. As far as bleeding and anticoagulants are concerned, maybe everyone reacts differently depending on type and dosage?
I was initially extremely worried after my BIL told me if the precautions he had to take as he is on warfarin, and many of the comments on this forum.
I being a very active person, and prone to cuts and bruises, I knew the inevitable would happen. Took a header on my mountain bike, and bounced off a large granite boulder leaving a nasty gash. It bled profusely for a bit, but after I cleaned and bandaged it , it settled Donne and stopped. I carried on without anymore leakage, and it healed fine. I’ve had other nicks and cuts that healed well, so Im wondering if it’s the meds/dosage? I’m on 20mg Xeralto once daily.
That sounds pretty traumatic Paul, sorry to hear that. Hope you recover quickly. The upside is that the look of you will improve…. my 77 year old one…er..won’t.
What horrible bad luck. At least the ambulance ladies sorted you out! Do you know how long your CV will be delayed? I cut my index finger just on the top knuckle a couple of weeks ago. It was not a deep cut and I was amazed by how much it bled and for how long. It took 1 hour for the bleeding to slow down and over 2 hours to stop completely. I went through 5 big plasters. These anticoagulants work all right ! Hope you recover soon.
Thanks Auric. It's 4 to 6 weeks of taking anticoagulants before you can have one. I wouldn't take them right now because I don't want to risk the bleeding starting again. Oh well - theses things happen !
Isn’t it silly the way one thing leads to another? The blood thinner effect should wear off fairly quickly surely. I have to take apixaban twice a day which means that some of the effect must wear off after 12 hours or so. Mind you i was told by the doctor that in case of a real trauma all they can do is to make me comfortable while I bleed. Not a lot of consolation. Hopefully you are feeling rather better now and they will reschedule your cv fairly quickly. Thank goodness there were people around at the time it happened and they were sensible and got help. Well done them. Chin up. It will get better and thank goodness we are not in Ukraine.
Sorry about your incident. I'm just wondering what "cv" means. Some people us abbreviations and truth is, I'm not a medical scholar and have no idea what they're trying to say. Wish they would invest a few more seconds in their post so people like me, can understand exactly what they are saying. I do hope you heal soon and so sorry you injured yourself. Thank you for sharing your story.
Sure HB. A CV is a cardioversion. It just means your heart is given an electric shock to return it to normal rythm. There's not much to it and it shows if other treatments maybe effective for you.
Oh my goodness, bless ya. Heads bleed terribly at the best of times. Get your iron levels checked when your up and about don’t want anaemia on top of everything. Doesn’t take much blood loss for that to drop. Rest up and keep us up to date. Take care ❤️
Hello Paul,I’m so sorry you’ve had such a traumatic time. It must of been so scary 😧 for you.
Thankfully the paramedics were with you so quickly and really got things moving, well done them.
I do hope they can do your CV as soon as it is safe to do so, you have really been through it lately.
I hope and pray you start to feel better real soon, I’m sending you a big virtual hug 🫂 . Try not to feel too down in the dumps, I know that’s easier said than done at times, but we are all here for you.
Take care and wishing you all the VERY best for a speedy recovery.
Thanks Shirley. The para's were right on the ball. I feel ok but changed my dressing today - what a mess. Still many are worse off than I.You have a great day
I'm so sorry all this happened. A fall like that is jarring to the whole body, not just the points of impact. I hope you heal quickly. Very sorry to hear your CV is postponed. Best wishes for a full recovery!
I don't know what a CV is? Not sure why, but I've had some bleeding episodes, and I've taken warfarin for over 12 years, it may have been a bit slow to stop but it's always stopped. Maybe your dose is too high? My target range for INR is 2.5-3.5 and it seems to be ok if I have any bleeding.
Thanks Blue. I'm on Dabigatran 150 mg twice a day - it's a standard dose. A CV is a cardioversion - it's an electric shock to the heart which may / may not put you in a normal rhythm. Worth a mention to your doctor ?
That's why I take 110mg x twice day of PRADAXA. It has a anti - sto whatever you call it. Easy to obtain too and not as expensive as trying yo stop bleedinf of others.
Should we all have an anti on us or at home?
What are you on?
cheri. JOY
Accidents do happen. Damned (stroke) if you do not take them damned if you do (excessive bleeding).
I know Joy. I am also on the same. Before a CV you need take them for about 6 weeks. I've had to stop now because of the bleeding. I won't chance it. The wound is already bleeding out so no more for me for a few day's. Rock and a hard place !
Your experience sounds like a nightmare. I am on Xarelto and aspirin. I have had minor cuts that bled so much. Because of afib I must take them. Also have had anemia issues. All the invasive testing showed nothing. your experience is a reminder for me to be careful. Hope it all gets back to normal soon. Anticoagulants--can't live with them and can't live without them.
Ty Elf. I'm still keeping off them as my head wound is still pretty bad. It's a nightmare really as my CV is put back. Do I risk a stroke or a bleed out ?? Just at the moment I don't want the bleeding to start again as it can be really bad - serious stuff. I've put an old shirt on my bed and it's covered in blood. That's without taking the anticoagilants. I just feel until I get the stitches taken out (and things heal) I'm keeping off them. That's my pick I know - my chad score is zero but who knows. I don't want to start on them again tonight as I know will happen.
I want to add this to the thread for those on anticoagilants. I'm not a medic so this is just my choice. Don't stop taking them without discussing it first without talking to your doctor. I know what will happen if I start again so I'll leave it a few more days. However you MUST talk to your doctor should the same happen to you. This is my personal decsion as an adult but it might not be right for you. My Chad score is 0 which is the only reason I'm chancing this. I don't want to bleed out again but the quicker I can start taking them again the better.
