Rivoroxaban and Aspirin

My husband awoke at 5.30 this morning choking and making no sense. His mouth was twisted left hand side. I called the ambulance but by the time they arrived the attack had subsided, face back as normal and speech coherent, although difficult to understand from residual damage following strokes 14 years ago. His BP was normal as were his bloods. They thought and I thought this had been a TIA and they whisked him off to A&E. where all tests were duplicated. To cut to the chase the duty doctor discussed his case with the stroke specialist and decided to change his statin from rosuva to atorva statin and to add 75 mcg aspirin to the mix. I protested vehemently about the latter but was finally persuaded very reluctantly by the argument, part of which was the assertion that this is now usual practice under such circumstances and events as my my husband had experienced.

I would appreciate your views as I am still freaking out at the thought.

Aspirin can help disperse clots I believe and is often used along side anticoagulants in some cases. It has little prophylactic benefit pre event but useful post events.

thank you Bob. That’s what the Doctor said too.

As I understand it, aspirin is an 'anti-platelet' which stops the red blood cells sticking together, hence the blood clot dispersing ability. This is not the same thing as an anticoagulant, which will stop clots forming in the first place.

You are right, hence aspirin has a degree of cardioprotective affect. Although I have been free of AF for some years. taking 100 mg/ day has been recommended to me by a cardiologist. A little can go a long way
