This reads like a very important one. Over 500,000 participants. The study indicates a significantly higher rate of serious bleeds with Xarelto compared to Eliquis. It is a large study. The article goes into the details. It focused on older users.

Among every 1,000 individuals, the combined rate of major bleeding events and strokes due to clogged arteries or hemorrhage was roughly 16 per year with Xarelto versus about 13 per year with Eliquis.

After taking participants' other risk factors into account, the overall rate of these events was 18% higher with Xarelto, they said. Xarelto was tied to a 12% higher rate of clot-related stroke, a 26% higher rate of bleeding-related stroke, a 41% higher rate of fatal non-stroke bleeding, and a roughly doubled rate of non-fatal non-stroke bleeding.

The highlighted figures are applicable to the 16 in a 1000 strokes- it does not mean your stroke risk is 18% higher .

On the figures given the stroke risk with Xeralto is 1.6% and Eliquis 1.3%

your risk factor with Xeralto is 0.288% higher instead of Eliquis.

I have used it for 6 years with no issue, I am not saying there are no issues, just that I haven’t had any.

Aaaaaand, we'll all panic, switch to Eliquis only to hear of yet another study showing Eliquis causes/has a higher incidence of....*sigh*

"your risk factor with Xeralto is 0.288% higher instead of Eliquis." Sounds insignificant. Who organized/financed the study?

The study was published in JAMA. It contributes to a greater understanding,IMHO, of the risks all of us on anti-coagulation therapy face. Obviously, no one should panic. That said, apixaban (Eliquis) is the preferred drug of the two by most doctors. Has been for years. This article in a respected journal like JAMA will probably contribute to apixaban becoming more dominant in the marketplace. As for the % differences being insignificant, that could be said of the overall rate of significant bleeds on any anti-coagulation med when the overall population using it is considered. And % is, imo, a lousy way of evaluating things when real numbers are small. I will add this article to my information base in deciding my treatment. But it wouldn't be my sole determining factor.

I have been taking Xarelto for a while now. I developed severe anemia but where is still being investigated. They are hung up on GI system but endoscopy failed to show it. Now the Dr wants to do again. I said no thanks. No apparent bleeding noted anywhere. I have an appointment in January and will insist they refer me to a hematologist or renal doctor. It can't be that complicated. Perhaps a new doctor is in order. In this time of pandemic with all my problems I can't see a doctor wanting to take it on. We currently have approx. 500 new cases a day. Makes me want to hide under the covers and wait for change.
