Info on Dabigatran please

I tried taking Apixaban but, unfortunately, had a strong allergic reaction to the lactose in the pill. My doctor has now suggested Dabigatran - has anyone any experience of this?

Yes - can cause acid reflux so be very careful how you take it - taking with carbs especially bread, biscuits cake or cereals will increase the chances of acid reflux. Take with full glass of water which I think. ??? it says on leaflet?

Thanks for the info. Do you take Omeprazole too? Any problems with that?

Definately not! That causes even more problems and once on it you can’t stop without risking rebound. Just being really careful about how you take. They method above I found worked and my husband still uses Dabigatran and works for him.

I took Dabigatran for about 3 years then switched to Apixaban which gives me not problems but I did a lot of research and what I found out was that the gel casing required an acid environment to properly dissolve and the active ingredient be absorbed in the stomach, which to be efficacious it needs to. Lower the stomach acid by PPIs and carbs and that doesn’t happen. Also because the acid pumps in the lining of the stomach are depressed the sphincter at the bottom of the stomach won’t open properly and then you get a very full feeling and what happened to me was I would then get acid reflux and a very bloated sticky sensation. Other DOACS are designed to be elsewhere in the GI tract - hence tend not to cause so many problems.

I have had reactions to fillers in tablets - it’s SO annoying because things like lactose intolerance is so common and so well known about. What do they expect people to do?

Thanks so much. My doctor discovered that Dabigatran is the ONLY one of all DOACs that doesn't contain lactose, so I don't have much choice.

The form I was given is a liquid within a gel casing.

Hi there,

You may be interested in checking this out from Australia where they have back in 2013 issued a safety advisory about this drug. The following link should help.

tga.gov.au/alert/dabigatran...

You may wish to use this information and check out what NICE has to say. I gather the TGA in Australia performs a similar role to NICE here in Britain.

Can't help any further am afraid as I don't use the stuff.

Just a comment on the link John provided - good advice but that info also applies to ALL DOACS.
