Hi 5 days post ablation, today my heart felt like it was jumping out my chest, only lasted couple minutes. I get confused with what eptopics are and all the other different types of beats and rhythm are , can anyone explain please, sorry to sound so naive.

There are so many variables - books are written on the subject but the main ones discussed on this site are:-

AF - irregular rhythm at variable heart rates

AFL - regular rhythm with fast heart rate

Tachycardia- fast rate ie:- in excess of 120/min

Ectopics - skipped beats - everyone has ectopics but we AFers tend to notice them a lot more than normal folk. Harmless but can make you feel very uncomfortable when they come in runs. Very common after ablations.

We could go on to PACs & PVCs but that could complicate matters.

Your episode are most likely to be Tachycardia or Ectopics but unless you capture on ECG you are in guesswork territory.

Hope that helps.

Thank you so much, that’s very helpful, it can all be so confusing though and scary. Again thank you.

Ectopic in medical terms just means out of place. You can have ectopic atrial beats or ventricular ones.

The top and bottom chambers are supposed to work in unison with the top (atrium) pumping first to fill the lower (ventricle). If the top does a double pump or delays one then the next ventricular contraction will not have any blood to pump so it closes on empty and you get a missed beat.

Ectopics are a normal function of a healthy heart and considered quite benign but sometimes they can come in clusters which I know can be quite irritating. They are seldom if ever treated by the medical profession but the slow deep breathing exercise we suggest does usually help.

Hi, these seem to be normal after ablation so don't worry and get lots of rest. Best wishes :)

I had loads of these in the first few weeks - ectopics as well as runs of AF. With the ectopics I just felt a bit odd but not uncomfortable like AF. I slow my breathing down to about 6 in and outbreaths a minute and that always seri to get rid of the ectopics for me.
