Kardia BPM reading

Is it normal for a Kardia device to to show a normal BPM than jump to a high reading in the last 15 secs.

My Afib has returned and i feel (as I usually do in Afib) overwhelmed with anxiety. My kardia device is consistently showing a heart rate of over 125bpm, however for the first 10 secs or so it reads around 70bpm before jumping up. Is that the normal process or are these device readings a bit hit and miss?

If you are in AF your bpm will be variable.

The Kardia will give you an average over the 30 secs of the reading and it is this figure which is the only one I took notice of and which reports at the end of the reading. My HR would jump to up to 200+ and dip to 70 during the reading & then give an average of 130 for example.

So perfectly normal for Kardia to show that type of variance for someone in AF.

I use a Kardia as well. CDreamer echoes my experience. The other issue is your bvious anxiety which can certainly contribute to a higher rate.

Hi Offside :-) as with the other members my Kardia BPM reading varies and I look at the final figure and accept that .

The first one is often highest - for me anyway as I tend to worry about what it will come with. "2nd drops a little when I know it'ok.

Tell you want I've done with my moniter (serious) I've chucked it on the bonfire. The only I one I keep is the fitbit but that can be hit miss.

I'm tempted to buy another - but 20 fags and a bottle of whisky might be a better bet and give a better reading.

Have a lovely evening.

Paul

EDIT - that comment is tongue in check. If you are thinking about buying a monitor look at the Kadia - I think it's as good as your get.

I've provided a snapshot of my kardia reading. I go into persistent Afib quite regularly which always leads to me having a procedure to correct it. My meds usually keep my BPM a bit lower than what is shown.I'm always in a quandary as to what I should do when my Afib returns.

I'll probably ring the doctors tomorrow. The anxiety and breathlessness is a pain.

Either there’s a lot of interference or your heart is doing weird stuff. 120 is not very high for AF so you should be OK, maybe try to get a better recording?

So, for a 'better' recording, turn on the airplane mode on your mobile, then switch back on the bluetooth (if it is a 6L Kardia) and sit still away from other mobiles, microwave ovens, or electronic displays like large TVs.

What no-one has said so far is that the reported rate of 'beats per minute' during the recording are estimated from the interval between two beats, and as this is different between any two beats during AF, then the 'rate' will vary continuously as well. The final rate given by the Kardia is the rate determined by the overall average after the full length of the recording (usually 30 seconds), so that is the one most accurately reflecting what is going on.

If you regularly get 70 bpm at the start then >125 then that would be very odd I think. The print you show is 123 bpm with little variation (12 little squares between R waves). I assume you have counted squares or measured R to R distance to get the 70 to start then >125?

Have you got a 6 Lead Kardia or the single lead version?

And does your reading include the Heart Rate Variability graph added a few months ago? - it appears at the bottom of the pdf you can download. Mine this morning looks like this (normal sinus rhythm). I’ll post one that’s not so bonny after.

Hi, no my Kardia is not the six lead variety and I don't seem to be able to obtain the information you can. Perhaps I should upgrade.Thank you so much for your help

And this one is during A Fib. nb when you scroll down the pdf with your finger/mouse it sticks at the end of the ecg and needs another scroll to see the HRV graph followed by an average beat plot (I don’t know the value of that graph).

Thank you all for taking time to reply.I've done as momist suggested and took another reading which I've provided.

I've been in AF for a week now. My meds (bisop, flac, acol) usually keep my BPM between 70-90 even when in AF.

I've was unable to get a GP appointment but I will ring my cardiologists secretary later today and probably go to hospital to get it checked.

Not an expert at all but a couple of people have been diagnosed with AF only to be told by EP they have atrial tachycardia with ectopics and from your lovely clear recording that is what it looks like to me - if not I wish my AF was so even 🤔

Thank you for the replies.I was unable to get a GP appointment so I went to hospital yesterday to get it checked out.

I'm always in a quandary as to what to do when my AF returns. I had no doubt I was in AF because of my breathlessness doing absolutely anything, and my anxiety ( My anxiety isn't a worry over AF, just a symptom I seem to have). I was more concerned about my heart rate being consistently over 120 BPM for a least 3 days. ECG confirmed AF with a heart rate of 126.

I was put on a saline drip and given some Bisoprolol. 4 hours later and BPM was still high so they admitted to a ward, but assured me I could go home once my ECG reading was ok.

Ended taking more Bisoprolol and staying the night as a precaution because of the meds I'd taken.

I'll be in AF now until I have a cardioversion.

I will ring my Cardiologists secretary on Monday to get an appointment.
