My father, 90, persistent afib, 3 yrs, Xarelto, was hospitalized for upper gi, major bleed. Xarelto is definite cause, now stopped. Bleeding stopped. Are all blood thinners out of the question now, after a very serious internal bleed?

Anticoagulation is always a balance of risk Kraft. The risks increase with age so it may well be that at age 90 doctors decide that the risk from a serious bleed is higher than that of a stroke and terminate all anticoagulation. It's a hard choice to make.

He is a fall risk, so staying off the blood thinners at this point seems the only option. Threat of stoke scares me, though. Thank you.
