High heart rate post-ablation

I had a cardiac ablation for both AF and flutter 4 weeks ago. Recovery has been pretty smooth; one episode at 10 days where i had a heart rate of like 150 bpm for 4 hours, but it settled on its own. at 2 week check-up, EKG showed no sign of AF, but some flutter. my EP added amioderone to the metropolol and eliquis i had been taking for 6 months, saying he wanted to "calm down" my heart for 60 days and then wean me off the amioderone.

I have been feeling fine, and started back with some mild exercise a few days ago. felt great after great walks of 1.5 miles.

But tonight i went to check my pulse before bed, and my heart rate was 93 bpm. pre ablation, my resting heart rate was 70-72.

I know one can expect a small increase in heart rate after ablation, but 20 bpm difference seems excessive. is it?

My HR post ablation stayed in the 90’s for months. It took 9 months to return to pre ablation norms. You might want to ask your GP but sounds usual to me.

Not from my experience. It can take six to nine months for HR to return to "normal".

My heart rate was occasionally in the 90s for 3-4 months after my ablation last November , my resting heart rate is up from low 60s to low 70s now ( but that might be down to no longer taking bisoprolol) It definately takes months rather than weeks to fully settle

Sounds like you are on the good road to a better Qol long may that continue!

Mine remained high for many months. I read that it's a good sign for successful ablation if you have a raised heart rate, but I cannot remember the article I read now. Best wishes

Oooh, not seen that mentioned before. Fingers crossed that's right then.

3 links to articles that appear to indicate raised HR is a good sign of success:-

Thank you so much. Very interesting. I have been hoping for my resting heart rate to go back to normal in the 50s but may be it's ok where it's at then in the 70s.

Thanks for the response. FWIW, i was in the 90s for 24 hours, had a beer with a friend in my garden yesterday evening, and my heart rate had dropped to 82-84 before bed. This morning--73-75 resting rate.

My heart rate was 20 points higher for about a month and a half after my ablation in April. All's fine now. I wish you a speedy recovery!

Had my ablation in April. Prior resting average HR was in 50s. For a couple of weeks post ablation it was still in 50s and then went up into top end of 80s, so around 30bpm extra. On Diltiazem now and its dropped down into low-mid 70s. Apparently normal and may last for some time. Hope all goes well for you.

Exactly the same for me concerning HR.I am 3 months post Ablation and I feel good. I bought a heart monitor and it shows heart rate current with last four hours. Sleeping is showing on graph. Average rate is listed as well. Very reassuring ...reduces stress. The one I could afford is sold on Amazon. Check it out so you can sleep without worrying.

I had the same experience and heart rate is still faster...resting rate in 80's four years later but Dr. is okay with it and I only get racing heart beats less than once a month.
