Hi everyone, I have had paroxsysmal Afib for about two years now, which is well controlled with Bisoprolol and Apixaban.
For about 2 weeks now I have become aware of my heart fluttering and bumping on occasions and also feel extremely tired.
I have recently had surgery for an Umbilical Hernia and an extremely traumatic tooth extraction, where the tooth wouldn't come out and the Dentist had to break it and pull it out bit by bit.
My Pulse is normally 60bpm on my tablets, but yesterday I managed to catch one of the fluttering episodes on the blood pressure monitor and it had gone up to 88bpm. I know this is is in normal range but my bp had gone up to 152/94 which is extremely high for me. This lasted a few minutes.
Do you think I need to see Doctor?
Thank you, Jenny

I agree with the other Bob. If you have a heart which is prone to AF then it’s not unusual to have all sorts of thuds, bumps and the like. My AF has been under pretty good control for a long time now. I’ve suffered more with ectopic beats which are more difficult to damp down, but are not considered dangerous. Any sort of trauma, or secondary illness can easily bring on some irregular heart activity but if it settles down again fairly quickly it’s usually nothing to worry about. The only sober note is that AF is a progressive condition, and you may need more attention, possibly just a medication tweak, as time goes on.
A supplement that may help is CoQ10 200mgs/day; suggest you use a reliable supplier like Lamberts in the UK. Do let your medics know if you decide to try it; expect a shrug of the shoulders! I've been advised to partner that supplement with a magnesium compound that includes taurine & potassium plus other possible beneficials.
Yes I have heard that is supposed to be a more concentrated version.
My suggestion came via a London Naturopath and after taking ordinary CoQ10 I tested my levels with a blood sample every 6 months, as the recommendation was to get my level up to the top or even over the normal range (0.55 - 2.0). I had no trouble in reaching that level and kept it there by taking 200mgs per weekday and 100mgs on the weekend days.
PS There may be other reasons but recently I had been reducing my CoQ10 (as not tested for a while and concerned over too high a level) and started getting one or two daily strange very light flutter type experiences. Since increased the weekly amount and the flutters seems to have gone??
Hi Jenny, Well I have the same, in fact it’s been ages since I had the last batch of them then Friday I got it back and yes was extremely tired too. It was missing a beat, jumping, fluttering....it was the tiredness that got me I went to bed and felt so bodilily tired not sleepy tired. I’m in bisoprolol apixaban flec and losarten so more than you. Pulse was 60-70....If it goes like last time I expect I will get a few more occasions and hopefully settle again....I’ve been told not to worry about them but they are disconcerting , it’s the bodily tired that gets me.....
I find the not worrying to be important when dealing with shortage of breath as worrying just makes it worse. I try to breathe slowly when that happens.
Hi JennyFirst of all I would say if you feel uneasy or unhappy about anything you should always speak to you GP.
However, I’d also say that occasional
feelings of flutter are not unusual. Also ( and I speak only from personal experience here and as a permanent persistent AF sufferer) it is not always possible to get an accurate BP reading. I can’t have my blood pressure taken at all with a modern machine as it always gives an abnormally high reading - it has to be done the old fashioned way. So I’m wondering , if you were suffering an AF episode if his is what was happening?
Tiredness and lethargy are known side effects of Bisopropol. I took it for 3 years. Glad I stopped. If your medication is controlling your AF then you may well have to live with side effects like all drugs. Rough with smooth.
Do you take anything as an alternative to bisoprolol? I am on 3.75 mg of bisoprolol and experience fatigue quite often but didn't connect the two until I read your post.
Initially my Cardiologist prescribed Bisopropol for lowering my blood pressure along side Amlodipine. It is used frequently to assist the control of AF as it is a betablocker. It just didn t work for me and in fact made the situation worse as this drug can lower your HR and most times I had a HR at 2.00 am of 45 and this brought on more episodes of AF. After an ablation in late 2018 I immediately stopped Flecainide and I stopped Bisopropol a year earlier. A good result. Good luck.
