Hi,

Was diagnosed with Afib back in January 2020, had a kardioversion in October 2020 which unfortunately failed

On apixban 10mg and 10mg biosopal Dailey

4 weeks ago had a monitor on for 24 hours, just received a letter to see doctor in mid September

What’s the usual next steps going forward

Would I be better paying to see a consultant ?

Thanks in advance

Andy

On the basis that you already had a cardioversion one presumes that at some point you must have seen a cardiologist. The specialists in the field of arrhythmias are Electophysiologists (EP) who are cardiologists with extra training in rhythm disorders so maybe now is a good time to ask to be referred to an EP. Quite a few people here in UK do pay privately for an initial consultation and with your existing monitor results (by the way always ask for copies of any and all test results. You may not understand them but can show to any specialist) you will save some cash but be careful if further tests ar required as these can be expensive.

Typically I would expect an echocardiogram (ultrasound examination of all the valves and chambers) to be requested next to asssess the mechanical health of your heart along with blood tests to check for any thyroid issues,

Thanks BobDMakes sense, just don’t want to start paying and the spiral out of control cost wise if that makes sense

If you pay for a consultation does it become a separate thing or run along side of the NHS

Thanks

Most see EP privately and then go on their NHS list.

Speaking from my own experience, I had a private consultation with an EP who ultimately treated me on the NHS. In my view, it is important not to do this with a view to jumping queues and to make it clear that this is not your intention from the outset. I wanted to establish the most suitable form of treatment available and once decided, I was put on the waiting list for a Cryoablation.

There is a lot of form filling in nowadays to transfer to and from NHS consultant’s lists and contra to popular belief, you won’t be treated any faster because you had a private consultation.

BUT the consultation in itself can be illuminating and you will have time with your consultant to discuss, for them to explain and for you to ask questions. Cost for consultation was around £200-300 - may have changed recently? Tests will be more - ECG was about £180 and Echo more, your GP should do the bloods tests.

Yes for first consultation and yes they can start you off on appropriate meds.Bob said it all for me so won't repeat .

Good luck.

I saw my EP within days and then went on his NHS list

Hi Andy I would say a big yes to that question, thee money you pay means you have time to ask about you as an individual and for af the knowledge really is power . Also the reduced wait time to see the EP , in my experience , reduces anxiety and that is good for you too

Hi Andy, I don’t know which hospital you are attached to but if you’re struggling on your current drugs have you tried getting in contact with arrhythmia nurse at the hospital in the interim? I’m with Frimley Park and the nurse there is excellent. She liaises with my EP.

Best wishes

I was diagnosed AF last June. In that time have had two telephone consultations and an Echocardiogram, all with NHS, didn't see the need, personally, to go for private consultation. And it is just that, a personal choice. I'm happy with the way the NHS has treated me, was on meds fairly quickly by gp and then through Arrhythmia Nurse/Cardiologist.

Not paid a penny in private fees but that's not knocking those that have. If it brings peace of mind quicker then all good. Im currently on the waiting list to get on the waiting list!!

Good luck to yourself and all the others awaiting treatment.
