Atrial Flutter

After two ablations I have no AF, but have developed Atrial Flutter which is constant. My Cardiologist will install a duel chamber Pacemaker for control. I am on 2.5mg Bisoprolol and Apixaban which I seem to tolerate quite well.

Has anyone on here had a pacemaker fitted for Atrial Flutter?

Not sure of pacemaker as treatment but I'm curious as to why you haven't been offered an ablation for the flutter,as it's usually the recommended route and high success rate 90+%. I wonder why ?

There are several people on here who have pacemakers and I'm sure they will be able to offer opinions.

Best wishes x

My AF RF ablation in September 2020 didnt hold......had 2 cardioversions (1 external, 1 internal) then by november they decided it was new flutter not the old AF. Had a flutter ablation in january .... and so far all good!

Hi Golfer60, I used Bisoprolol and Apixiban together for a few years and and did very well with it having no AF at all. I have not had an ablation. My cardiologist recently changed my medication to Verapamil and told me it's for older patients, I am 70 years old. So far so good, I often fall asleep in the evenings when I dont want to, is this Verapamil? Or just me? Don't know. Good luck with everything.

Heartface.

Many thanks for your reply. As far as going to sleep is concerned I can drop off so easily on an afternoon for an hour. Don't sleep well at night though. I am 76 and still play golf 3 x per week so i should not complain too much. 😊😊

Have you consulted a nutritiotionist. It is amazing how a good diet with good timing of meals and snacks furing the day can help your heart recover.

June Butlin near Bristol is the wizard who helps people after a full questionnaire even over the phone.. You can google her and read some of her papers on line. She know what certain foods suit or do not suit you personally. Everything should be easy on the digestion. Regards, Wendy

Hello Golfer60UK, Has there been discussions with your cardiologist or EP regarding other treatment options for dealing with atrial flutter. I am unsure if a pacemaker would be first line treatment for flutter (usually pacemaker required when HR dips too low) .

Thanks for your reply, yes had quite a discussion with the Cardiologist after a heart scan where the flutter was showing, apparently there was still a little AF showing too. So she feels the pacemaker the best course to take

Not trying to pry into your personal business, but am wondering if you can share what the cardiologist is hoping to treat with the use of a pacemaker re: atrial flutter? Have you spoken with an electrophysiologist regarding a second opinion? Keep safe

She is a Consultant Cardiologist and an Electrophysiologist, so after a heart scan the results show Atrial Flutter and some Atrial Fibrillation, she advised the treatment. I did say I would prefer not to take tablets.

Many thanks for your concern and best wishes

I've had 4 ablations with top EP's. My first was for atrial flutter. During my recent AFIB ablation ... my EP said the right chamber where the flutter was fixed 11 years ago was dead quiet and still performing nicely.

Atrial flutter is much more easier to repair than AFIB. Since you already had 2 ablations and are familiar with them ... why isn't an EP offering to fix the flutter?

Your age is not even an issue ... as my EP's perform complex arrhythmia ablations on patients well into their 90's.

Maybe you're getting this counsel from a GP or Cardiologist. If that's the case, you need a second opinion ASAP with a qualified EP. They know much more about these cardiac rhythm issues than either of the former practitioners.

Good Luck!

I'm still wondering how a pacemaker can possibly fix AFlutter. Never thought this possible but with technology now, who knows.

Unless a pace and ablate would be done.

Possibly a resynchronisation pacemaker is what's been suggested.
