Bisoprolol

Have been on 5mg twice per day for months now as well as Degoxin and Enestra ? Fell a bit tired during the day at times and don’t sleep like I used to. But it’s got my heart rate down to around 70bpm and blood pressure 105/85 so medication doing it’s job but all these medications have side effects.

Take care

Regards

Mike

The good thing about bisoprolol is it works really well, but for some ( absolutely not all it seems) the side effects are unpleasant.

If you don’t have them you are in a good place! And so I would just be happy😊

One thing from my own experience is that if you do get side effects... you will know! I had panic attacks, disturbed sleep, sweats etc.

Great to hear they are working my EP says that it works for many more than it doesn’t, but that on forums such as this there is ( obviously) more inputs from those with problems than those like you fir whom it works

Hi Mike.

Firstly is that your real name? If so then your an instant legend in my eyes 💪😂

Secondly I’m on bisop myself (2.5) daily and it does make you feel tired. That’s probably the worst and most common side affect. Not great but you do get used to it. My heart rate sits around 54/55 on bisop. I’m assuming the drop in heart rate has something to do with the tiredness but don’t know that for sure. Someone will probably know more about the technicality of it on here. Not sure how old and how active you are personally but I find exercise helps you push through the tiredness. I can’t do much at the minute but a 2 mile walk seems to perk me up a bit. Another tip is I tend to take the bisop just before bed and it seems to make me sleep more soundly. Not sure if this works for anyone else but seems to work for me.

Hope this helps mate and good luck 👍

Yes Michael Tyson is my real name. Reading other comments about legs itching I have this problem and had restless legs when trying to get off to sleep. I apply moisturising cream to my legs below the knee a couple of times per day. My Doc has put me on Gabapentin 400mg which I take a couple of hrs before going to bed. I also apply Magnesium butter to my lower legs and ankles before getting into bed which I get from Amazon. This seems to have cured my restless leg problem. My doctor has helped to reduce my sleeping problems as I find I can get off to sleep ok with the help of a little Valerian root but I find my biggest problem is waking around 3 to 5am and not being able to get back to sleep. So my Doc has gives me every two weeks 14 Zolpidem 5mg tablets which works very well for me as the half life is only about an hour so they get me off to sleep again without any next day side effects. I personally find it terrible lying in bed and not been able to sleep. I am now 80 and never had any sleep problems ever until I was 78 and my local hospital put me on Amiodarone and Bisoprolol. I am now off the horrible Amiodarone and on Dejoxin also on Entrestor ? Which helps make my heart pump better as had a chest infection last year so was admitted to hospital for 6 days. Which means my heart only pumps at 30% of normal. So all in all I now on quite a lot of different medications which seem to be working but all these drugs seem to have side effects so I feel quite tired some of the time but I am still here ?😊😊

Same with me, bisoprolol was prescribed after pacemaker 10mg at first ,then halved then came off it altogether. And so far so good all chest heaviness gone, no more dry mouth, and itchy skin. Just goes to show how different we all are.

RoyMacDonald profile image
RoyMacDonald in reply toTenorJK

Itchy skin was a major problem for me as well. I only got about 2 hrs sleep a night because my legs itched so much. I thought the itching was caused by the dosage of Apixaban. But I recently went back to my original 5 mg dose without any problems so it must have been the bisoprolol. All the best.

Very interesting you mention itching. We got a couple of brand new duvets a few months back and I have put my night time itching down to that! Now I think about it though it was around the same time I changed back to bisop. Never made the connection. Do seem to itch like made before I fall to sleep. Doesn’t tend to wake me up 🙏 sounds like may be the bisop causing it though.

I often feel like a little sleep late afternoon. But if I shut my eyes and start to drift off to sleep. I then wake up suddenly with all sorts of pictures and sensations in my head ? Some are of the people and the Generator workplace I last worked at over 20 years ago. Its strange as I do not get these strange sensations when I get into bed at night usually around midnight. I usually take about 20 to 30 mins to get off to sleep but don’t get any weird sensations in my head when trying to get off to sleep in bed around midnight. If anyone can explain these weird sensation which I find quite frightening at times. I would appreciate any possible explanations ?? Many ThanksStay Safe

I. Am now 11 weeks off beta blockers . Bisoprolol withdrawal ( I was permanently in withdrawal while I was on it long story) caused continuous vivid dreams and nightmares every night . All kinds of stuff raked up from childhood and beyond. It is lipophilic that is crosses the blood brain barrier . Basically it gets into your head . Daytime all kinds of anxiety and weird imaginings . Weird feelings sensations in my head . Horrible drug

You don’t take anything at all now p? Just all el natural?

Peony4575 profile image
Peony4575 in reply toElli86

Well HRT Elli but you are unlikely to be needing that ! Aspirin I put myself on about 10 years ago because it seemed like a good idea. At that time everyone was advised to take it , it was flavour of the month. And magnesium. Remember though so far I have only had one episode 8 months ago

What’s HRT when it’s at home p? Please forgive my ignorance I am but a mere mortal 😇

It’s funny you should mention hrt as I tried trt(testosterone replacement therapy) for my aforementioned and numerous muscular issues. Went to see a private test doc and my levels were fine but he told me it was worth a shot none the less. Felt great don’t get me wrong, energy was through the roof and well and truly annoyed the mrs as something else went through the roof as well 🤣🤣 but after 3 weeks and 3 injections was when my AF started kicking off big time. I mentioned this too the doc and he and every other doc, cardio, EP ive spoken too since don’t seem to think it has any relation at all? Seems like a huge coincidence to me? Test being known for causing heart problems when used heavily and all. Didn’t make sense to me.

Peony4575 profile image
Peony4575 in reply toElli86

Just had a quick furtle on google . Low testosterone can cause AF . High in the use of anabolic steroids can. Approach from another angle and added synthetic testosterone can affect the excretion of electrolytes from the kidney which can in itself cause AF. Mine was caused by an electrolyte imbalance caused by a painkiller . I would put money on it making it worse if you added testosterone to a normal level. I agree with you . What are your muscle problems exactly ?

Elli86 profile image
Elli86 in reply toPeony4575

🤔 that’s interesting. I’m convinced it’s what kicked it off. Docs don’t agree.

Muscles problems have been ongoing for last 9/10 years. I think caused by inflammation. In part due to me probably pushing too hard exercising but there’s also an inflammation issue inside my body as well. Starts with my gut I think. Everytime I try to exercise within a few weeks, sometimes I’m lucky and get a couple months max and I’ll get some sort of injury. Usually knee, ankle, calf, inside elbow/forearm or groin. Although I’ve had injuries pretty much all over. Bane of my existence literally. 😩😩

Peony4575 profile image
Peony4575 in reply toElli86

The injuries sound like over exercising given you say you were overdoing . Have you seen any specialists for your gut or just your GP ?

Elli86 profile image
Elli86 in reply toPeony4575

Could be but they are continual over a 10 yr period no matter what I try. Different sports, workouts, diets, supps etc. Been to see hundreds of different specialists over the years and no one seems to be able to get to the bottom of it. 😩👎

Peony4575 profile image
Peony4575 in reply toElli86

Have you seen a Rheumatologist ? Not hyper mobile are you ?

Elli86 profile image
Elli86 in reply toPeony4575

Have considered that. Not been confirmed or unconfirmed. Only thing that makes me think not is I used to train heavily for 2/3 years and didn’t get one injury. Then after getting sick and trying to come back I all of a sudden come out with all these injuries. It’s a strange one!

I did see one guy up London. Called himself a functional medicine practitioner. Very fancy name I know 🤔 he was bloody good actually. Seemed to know his stuff and he approached everything holistically which I like. Anyway he seemed to think that I could have picked up some sort of viral or bacterial infection when I got sick and it may lay dormant until I put my body under stress which it then uses as an opportunity to attack? Sounds a little bit out there I know 🤣 but also made sense in a way. We tried quite a few different natural remedies to kill things off in my gut. Thought it had worked for a while. Until the inevitable happened and I got injured again. 😩😩

Peony4575 profile image
Peony4575 in reply toElli86

Was it a viral / flu type illness you were originally sick with ?

Elli86 profile image
Elli86 in reply toPeony4575

Yes. I was at the cinema with the mrs and I started burning up MASSIVELY. Didn’t know where I was. Mrs said she’s never known anyone to get that hot 🤣 I was in bed for a good few days and had stamina and gut issues for a very long time after (months). It took a hell of a lot out of me

Been asking questions because there are a couple of hospital consultants in the family . I asked the relevant one and he said not enough to go on to venture an opinion . Would have loved to have been able to help but you will have to remain a mystery . I hate unsolved puzzles !

Without having had the opportunity to examine you, see test results etc all fits Post Viral Syndrome . No magic treatment sadly . Prioritise what you have to do. Get plenty of rest . Regular routine .. Good food . Increase activity gradually. Doing too much will set you back . I wish there was a magic pill . Consultant deals with this and he is very good . 🙄

Elli86 profile image
Elli86 in reply toPeony4575

Interesting 🤔 has that been known to last for years or is it usually weeks/months?

Peony4575 profile image
Peony4575 in reply toElli86

It varies . Some people recover very quickly others seem to take longer . The key is in pacing yourself . Graded exercise . Not overdoing so you get in a boom and bust cycle . The good news is the younger and fitter you are the faster you should hopefully recover. Look after yourself. No asbestos sandwiches ! 😀There are good resources on the net .Bristol hospital seem to have a good one . Antidepressants help some people but there is no magic bullet . As I said he hasn’t seen you but the gut the muscles and joints and fatigue all fit the bill . Could be worse ❤️

Elli86 profile image
Elli86 in reply toPeony4575

Should I refrain from eating all asbestos related cuisine? Or is it just sandwiches in particular that I should avoid? 🤣

Thanks for advice p I shall be having a look into that! 😃👍

Anti depressants though 😬😬😬 I’m not even happy taking bisop for my ticker 🤣🤣 is there some unintended side effect of anti depressants that work for PVS then? Curious as to why they would work? 🤔

Peony4575 profile image
Peony4575 in reply toElli86

Wouldn’t recommend them and totally with you in not taking tablets . Some people can have an underlying depression that manifests itself as fatigue . Some people get depressed because they aren’t well. Never come across anyone who sounds less depressed than you . Or has such a cheering effect on other people 😊 I am not a doctor so you really should discuss it with yours

Elli86 profile image
Elli86 in reply toPeony4575

Wow! I really do need to put you in touch with my mrs. If you could just repeat exactly what you just said to her that would be lovely 🤣 thanks for the compliment 😃👍 im going to take that and run! Or atleast I would if I could......but i can’t...... so maybe walking is the better option 😆

Peony4575 in reply toElli86

You will get past this Elli.PVS is a diagnosis of exclusion . And one from which you can get better. Remember the fable of the tortoise and the hare . Don’t run before you can walk ❤️

Bisoprolol worked for me for 7 weeks before the side effects appeared, side effects which meant that I was taken off all beta blockers for the rest of my life. The first was a very rare side effect, that is between 1 and 9 people in every 10,000 people who take Bisoprolol will get the side effect, and that was a man d still is urticaria ,known also as hives, and with it intolerance to certain foods including bananas, grapes, oranges and tomatoes. The second side effect was only "rare", between 1 and 9 people in every 1,000 who take the drug, and that was exacerbation of asthma. Fortunately the sudden exacerbation appeared while I was in a pharmacy. I had emergency admission to hospital after my GP had examined me. Since I stopped taking any beta blockers there has not been any more exacerbation of asthma. I've already had one antihistamine tablet today and will be taking 2 or 3 more before the day is out.
