Joint relief v blood thinners

shirljo profile image
29 Replies

I have joint pains due to Arthritis in my hip and would like to take a supplement but cannot find a suitable one which will not interfere with my blood thinners. It was suggested I took Collagen but I have no information from anywhere if this is a yes or no (Dr Google is sitting on the fence). So please if anyone has ideas, suggestions or have something else to share I'd be very grateful. thank you

I went to GP with arthritis experience, he was a consultant, with pains in my hip but mostly my hands. He prescribed 1g/daily of Glucosamine but I needed to take for a month before I would see any difference.

I settled on Glucosamine with Chondroitin Complex & notice a difference after a week if I run out. Just buy a good quality brand & make sure you check ALL the ingredients & look for the amount of the active ingredient- not just the pill as some companies pad out with fillers.

It definitely helps & I have less pain & less inflammation in my hands but they still can be stiff and painful.

I take Apixaban so there are very few interactions - the only thing I would avoid is Tumeric or the active ingredient in Tumeric.

Cider Vinegar with lemon & honey is a good daily tonic anyway.

CD, can you tell me where you get your Glucosamine etc from please and the dose you take? My arthritis is particularly bad in my fingers . Thanks

I get mine from the local Health Food Store - Nature’s Aid - I take 2 capsules of Glucosamine with Chrondroitin which contains 500mg of Glucosamine. A massage with warm Lavender oil is also quite soothing.

Thanks! I will try H&B which is close to me and see what they have , bearing in mind the necessity to take 1gram Glucosamine . Then I will be patient!!

Twenty years ago we took Glucosamine tablets and used a cream without any benefit. GP and consultant both said it was a waste of money. While there had had not been any long term investigations into it medical reports were not convinced of benefits. Seems like opinion has changed.

GP said you need to take 1 gram of Glucosamine daily to make any improvement and it takes about 4-6 weeks to notice a difference and I would say he was correct.

Thank you, I am so pleased to read your reply. I suffer with long term knee arthritis and used to take Glucosame with Chondroitin but stopped when I started on Apixiban as no one could tell me if it was safe to take with it. The difference when I stopped was incredible as it used to help so much. Reading your post I’ll start again.

I can only report my experience - I take Apixaban and haven’t had any problems.

I wonder who by? My GP was well aware I took anticoagulants.

Hi, why do u avoid turmeric? I thought it was good for inflammation.

CDreamer profile image
CDreamer in reply to captainKFF

Tumeric as a spice or tea is great, I use it often, but not as a supplement because that will enhance the efficacy of anticoagulants.

Curcumin is the active ingredient- you would need to consume 8gms a day of Tumeric to have any efficacy which is basically impossible to do when using it as a food - but easy to do if you take a supplement, which is what I was warning against taking.

Hi, how many teaspoons/tablespoons of cider vinegar in a glass of water do you recommend? Looking on-line there seems to be a great variation in opinions.

Way back in the mid 50's my late mother in law used to take cider vinegar.

My god-mother always swore by a mug of 1 tablespoon of cider vinegar with 1 teaspoon of honey, slice of lemon in hot water. She said she had never had colds or flu since.

I use Healthspan's Chondromax (a mixture of very pure Chondroitin and Glucosamine). I had a hip replaced in 2005 and the Xray (of both hips) led the consultant to say that I would need the other one replaced very soon. I started taking Chondromax at that point and the second hip replacement wasn't needed till 2012! All well since then. You can phone Healthspan and speak to knowledgable people about your particular needs, but read the basics on their website first. Healthspan's postal delivery is rapid.

I have used Healthspan for years and have found them to be excellent. A Consultant recommended them to me. The quality of their products is very good.

I've taken glucosamine for about 20 years due to arthritic knee. Diagnosed with AF 4 years ago but it never occurred to me that it might interact with my anticoagulant. I've not been aware of any issues. I take 1500 mg daily, which I buy online from Zipvit. My knee is mostly fine and allows me to walk up tp 5 miles daily, cycle, garden etc, but if I run out of glucosamine it very quickly becomes extremely painful. I'm sure we all know those searing stabs of pain that arthritic joints give us, not nice.

Hello shirljo, I to have arthritis in my knees very badly, I was getting at my wits end with the constant inflammatory pain, taking paracetamol which hardly touched the pain, Reading about turmeric a lot, thought I would give it a try, without hoping for much, however after about 2 weeks I realised the pain in my knees had subsided and I felt really good in myself, now on my second bottle of Tumeric

Strong strength I can honestly say that my knees are much better, not cured but can get up and down from sitting without yelling.

I also have had a broken and replacement hip which causes me low back pain, the turmeric does not help this but appears to be effective on inflammation.

Had a warfarin check last week and it was 2-3

Hope this helps you come to a decision but no guarantees.

Turmeric may not be right for you but it appears to be helping me.

Which brand of Turmeric do you use. A Daily Mail article on supplements said with most just buy the cheapest but without naming a brand said always buy the dearest Turmeric .

Thank you. Will look out for that one.

I think its more important what you don't eat than what you do eat. If you've already cut out sugar and simple starches and nightshade family and all the usual antagonists and are still having inflammation you might want to look at things you can do physically...but taking collegen or supplements won't help half as much as removing the antagonists from your diet. And that's different for everyone...

Some things you can take are probiotic foods, eating raw food as a starter to meals which have any animal products ...which help the gut not to turn on autoimmune attacks. Hot and cold foot baths. Acupressure. Massage. Even deep breathing meditation. Eating antioxidants like blueberries raspberries blackberries ... Lot of things will reduce inflammation and autoimmune attacks ..so many. And as far as I know those ones don't interact with blood thinners but you'd better double check me. I know one you should never take on blood thinners and that's cayenne pepper because it is itself a blood thinner. I think you can still use it topically on the skin for joint pain. But I'd really say focus on getting rid of the antagonists in diet first and that will help a lot. Cabbage juice I found really good. Stinky as a Thanksgiving fart but it did relieve so much joint pain within hours. That was the most powerful pain relief I got from any of the supplements or things I tried and I've been trying things for years. Collegen is fine by the way. You don't absorb colkegen but it informs your gut to inform your body to make collegen which is dandy and clever. But definitely AVOID anything like Cayenn pepper cos I know that's dangerous to take with blood thinners. Its what I take to thin my blood. I think you also have to avoid vitamin k supplements too or ask your doctor before taking. Thats all I know but I'm sure there are many more others to avoid that I've no idea about.

I use collagen. I've tried various brands and settled on Nutrizing which I have in my tea first thing. It has the least taste, some other brands tasted awful. I think it's made a slight difference to some OA I have in my knee. There seems to be more evidence for collagen than there is for glucosamine/chondroitin. However the best thing is exercise and weight reduction (if you have any to lose).

Co-codomol really helps, but better to take a dessert spoonful of cider vinegar in a drop of water followed by a dessert spoonful of a good olive oil from a dark bottle first thing every morning and a couple more through the day. I also avoid citrus fruit like the plague, try to keep the body moving and I no longer need painkillers.
