Dental treatment on Apixaban

Hi everyone, I am in the unfortunate position of needing a dental implant for a broken front tooth/crown. Not only is this extremely expensive but I am also concerned about bleeding as I am on apixaban. Has anyone had a similar experience with invasive dental treatments whilst on blood thinners?

Always best to discuss with your dentist but there are still a few who might not be familiar with DOAC’s.

Below is a link to NICE guidance for Apixaban. Scroll down and you will find a section headed “Should apixaban be stopped if surgery or dental treatment is required?” which is worth reading. If your dentist is not sure you should refer him/her to this guidance.

There is a small charge for this information, instead of saying blood thinners, please call them anticoagulants. 😉 (they don’t thin the blood) 👍

Good luck with the treatment........

I’m currently undergoing treatment for a dental implant. Absolutely fine for me. Came off Apixiban for a couple of days but no problem at all with bleeding. Procedure was painless and so much easier than I had imagined. Wish you well

Yes I have had similar treatment. The Dentist said I had no need to stop apixaban but I did no complications whatsoever and I didn't bleed any more or for any longer than I had before I was on apixaban. I have found that apixaban has not made any difference to this for me - having said that I always stopped bleeding quickly when injured so maybe I do bleed for a few seconds longerI don't know. the only problem I have had with apxaban is with bruising and inflammation.

All the best with the dental work and hope your finances are not too badly hit - so expensive I know I have had to have so much work to my teeth due to the shape of my lower jaw - as has my eldest son. My youngest son takes after his Mum and has good teeth but doesn't look after them!

Thank you for your reply. My dentist said that if I took the morning dose and had the treatment later in the say that would be the best as the half life is not that long with apixaban. A consultant that visits my dentist and does the implants should know....I hope! I am sure I'm not the first to be in this position. 🙃

I had two rear molar extractions during the first lockdown a fortnight apart. I was asked not to take my anti co-ag on the day. The cavity was packed and kept in for a couple of days. No issues at all and everything has healed nicely. Just dreading the likely cost of a lower denture :(

Hi there, I am hoping that the 'post' will be put in at the same time as the extraction otherwise there will be quite a wait for the gum to fully heal. I am waiting to see the consultant who will do the implant. All this pain and K have to pay as well lol! I did have my top 10 done 14 years ago and had 7 hours in the chair the first time and 5 hours to fix the porcelain crowns and there was no bleeding at all!

You may well find that procedures have moved on in that time. Do let us know how you get on. I'm sure everything will be fine and the only pain will be the cost! Good luck

You should always inform your dentist well ahead of your dental procedure if you are taking medication, especially anti-coagulants as this will give them the opportunity to discuss the best form of treatment for you. Please visit the AF Association for information regarding anti-coagulants heartrhythmalliance.org/afa...

I've had a great deal of dental treatment over past few years ..on warfarin...but no bleeding problems. Biggest problem was the cost..yikes !!🙄

Hi Julia, I know, we have to pay for the discomfort, what I could do with £2,600!

I've had two root canals and two extractions while on Apixaban- no extra bleeding at all.

Thanks rosy, did you stop taking apixaban before the treatment?

No they said only needed if several teeth extracted at once. I think I delayed the morning dose until after appointmentc

I was told by my GP to not take a tablet on the morning of my treatment.

I would explain that your on apixaban as they should know what to do! I had to miss a tablet the other week when I had toe surgery which obviously isn’t as bad!! But I was ok! Hope it goes really well.

Hello -- I've had two dental implants and with both had to be off off Xarelto, a blood-thinner, for three days per my cardiologist's orders. I'll also have to be off it for dental cleaning in May. Nope this helps.

I’ve never stopped Apixaban for any dental treatment but advice varies dependant upon where you live UK/US and your personal circumstances and your consultants.

In UK you can’t have dental cleaning now as too high risk for COVID.

Your dentist should be able to answer all your queries.

My implant has been a great success so wish you well.

Hi, my dentist told me no need to stop (low dose) Apixaban for a wisdom tooth extraction (abscessed) but unfortunately it didn't stop bleeding afterwards, I was up all night spitting blood out, had to go back I think three times for packing and stitches. A GP later said it should have been stopped.

Thanks Frodo I will see what the consultant says, it does make me nervous
