Onset of Afib

I need some advice. I had a cryoabalation in July 2018. I have been in sinus rhythm since. I went to bed last night and 2 hours later woke up with a heart rate in the 180s. Spent 5 ours in the ER. Came home and 12 hours later back in sinus rhythm. Is this normal? The only thing I changed was to a Claritin because of a cold. Could that do it? Any advice welcome.

Many cold remedies are pro arrhythmic. Check the precautions on the paper which comes with them.

Thank you Bob

What did the ER say? .... tachycardia? Good news is ... it doesn't sound like AFIB. In the USA, you don't get sent home from emergency if you have tachycardia that high ... until they get it to drop with meds and under control. Plus ... they give you a prescription for Diltiazem or similar rate control drug.

I know .... because a few months ago I was having tachycardia attacks, but not as high as yours. Mine were settled in around 130bpm. I also had AFIB with the tachycardia.

I received an ablation on OCT 23 .... and both AFIB and tachy are gone, so far.

Hopefully, yours is a one off from the OTC cold med ... and it won't come back.

See this list of side effects for Claritin:

rxlist.com/claritin-drug.htm

Extract: “What are the possible side effects of Claritin? Claritin may cause serious side effects including:

fast or uneven heart rate,

severe headache, and

feeling lightheaded.”

That said, if this is a new, sudden effect after years of sinus rhythm it should be discussed with a doctor.
