Has anyone yet had their second Covid vaccination ?

seasider18 profile image
81 Replies

Any reports yet of anyone having their second Covid vaccination this week since the government suggestion to delay it for up to twelve weeks ? We should be getting our one around the 9th but no word yet. I sent a text to the number that our initial appointment came from but no reply so far. The manufacturers are still sticking to their guns.

For some reason the text I sent asking about the second one was replied to my wives number:" Please DO NOT contact the surgery or the Vaccination Clinic regarding booking an appointment for your second COVID 19 Vaccination. The second dose will now be given on or around 12 weeks after the first dose. We will contact you when it is time to book your appointment. Kind Regards. Victoria Medical Centre. "

If they kept us informed we would not have to ask

I believe there are people here, or their family members who have had their second jab but it all sounds a bit hit ‘n miss at the moment....

Yes seems to be ,I am in Northern Ireland it seems a bit ad hoc here .

Just spoken to a friend almost 80 and he had his second jab today in Horsham, Sussex, close to Gatwick.....no problems with either which is good news. If I haven’t had my first by mid-Feb I shall be writing to Boris!! 😉

They only started here on Tuesday! Of course the percentage of elderly here in North Devon is much higher than most places (retirement heaven) so it will take a lot longer to filter down. My son's OH works at the Hospice in the lane here and they have heard nothing yet. There are benefits and disadvantages of where we live.

in reply to BobD

Bit difficult keeping the temperature down when it’s delivered on a horse ‘n cart.....😉

seasider18 profile image
seasider18 in reply to

I'm old enough to remember horses pulling carts and horse through's for them to refresh themselves. Where we lived in Edinburgh we were on a route where they came uphill from Leith Docks. When they first put down Zebra crossings the horses would not go over them so the carters used to put a sack over it.

Well into the 1950's my wives uncle delivered milk by horse and cart. It knew the route so well that as he took the milk to the doorstep the horse walked on and stopped at his next customers door.

in reply to seasider18

Yep, I used to help our milkman in the earlier 50’s and I was allowed to hold the reins but I had problems reaching the brake pedal which came up through the floor. It changed when they went battery driven with a long wiggly handle sticking out the front. They say what goes around, comes around.....won’t be too long before we’re all driving “milk floats”!

Where my Granny lived in Edinburgh was opposite the Co-op milk depot where Tommy (Sean ) Connery worked from as a milk man.

You must be an insomniac like me.Must be about 35 years since I've been to a British Zoo. When we took American friends to Madam Taussods (sp) and London Zoo. However we usually go to foreign ones when on holiday. We've been to zoos in Beijing, San Diego, Chicago, Central Park, Brooklyn, Paris, Moscow. We were always at Edinburgh zoo when I was a child. My favourite was Sally the young Elephant who I used to stand and feed and speak to for ages. She also took us on rides round the zoo.

Insomniac Me...no, been Church of England all my life. Sounds like you’ve had an interesting, well travelled life and are interested in animals. Do you still reside north of the border and do you think Sally, who would now be ‘old Sally’ , will still be alive❓

seasider18 profile image
seasider18 in reply to Tickerprobs

Sally came to the Zoo when she was very young about 4 I think. Sadly she died when she was in her 30's. There was an older one there with her at first. My daughter used to send me Birthday cards from her.We did see wild ones when we went to Zimbabwe and Botswana. We were once surrounded by about 60 of them. We loved travel and fortunately the company I worked was very generous with holidays. I left Edinburgh for London when I was 19 but we went back there for eight years after getting married as houses were so much cheaper there then. Back to London for 28 Years in 1966 and then 12 years in Edinburgh when I first retired and now 14 years in Eastbourne.

Good night this time I hope to sleep.

Our local farmer's plan was that either Clarrie, our milkman, or Charlie his horse would retire when the other one retired or died. They were both put out to pasture on the same day in about 1975(?).

Charlie also knew the round and could have done it himself if his hooves could've picked up a bottle, but when he was in the field us young lads would have rather messed with the bull (also Charlie...) than with Charlie the carthorse.

We also had outside toilets and victorian plumbing in the playground at school and every few weeks an old 'middin man' would come around and shovel all the stuff from the old ash midden into a special cart while we were playing next to it. Then his enormous white shire horse would trundle a cartload of very stinky stuff through our game of football. The local council also retired man and horse on the same day.

That was in the days before health and safety and human resource management messed it up.

There were some magnificent creatures. They were also such patient creatures. A near neighbour (Mrs White) had a coal business and her horse stood outside with it's nosebag when she came home for lunch.Used to see lovely Sire horses at the Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh and now to a lesser degree at Bexhill horse show.

DueNorth profile image
DueNorth in reply to seasider18

The other local celebrity horse pulled a small merry-go-round. It came every now and again, and every kid on the estate would rush out squealing with excitement. For 2d (less than 1 pence) or a bag of rags you could get a ride. We were all sons and daughters of Yorkshire miners and lived an incredibly lovely childhood. Nobody had 2 ha'pennies to scratch their a.... but we didn't care.

The horse stood patiently while the old guy wound a crank handle. We knew what was coming and waited in anticipation for him to shout "We're going the Chinese way!" whereupon he'd wind the handle backwards and we'd all ride in reverse!

The merry-go-round is now in York museum.

This was in the days of feral children with low expectations and before paranoia around unintended racism.

We did not have much but in many ways had a happier time.I remember once staying with a aunt who gave me four farthings and told me to go to paper shop and buy two bars of toffee. We could get a penny ice cream and actually a smaller one for a halfpenny in one shop. Every weekday when we were out my mother used to buy me a halfpenny packet of Sun Maid Raisins. Then my father said I could buy my own and gave me 2 1/2 p. pocket money

A really old guy was telling me how he could get a bus, 8 pints, fish and chips and a bus home for half a crown. His mate piped up "It was getting your hands on a f...ing half a crown that was the problem"...

That was good. The World Health Organization has refused to give its blessing to Britain's plan to space the two doses of Pfizer's coronavirus vaccine by more than a month.

Officials in the UK have decided to use all available doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech jab, which was the first to be approved, to get a single dose to as many people as possible. In the process they will leave people waiting up to 12 weeks for their second jab.

Covid cases started to fall around 12 days after people got their first dose in studies but, because everyone got a second shot just 10 days later, scientists don't know how long immunity from the initial jab would last.

The WHO yesterday said governments should be giving people their second dose within 21 to 28 days of having the first, to make sure the vaccine works long-term.

But it did not attack Britain's decision not to do this, admitting the Government had been forced to make a difficult decision because of spiralling infections and deaths in recent weeks.

But it did not attack Britain's decision not to do this, admitting the Government had been forced to make a difficult decision because of spiralling infections and deaths in recent weeks.

One of the experts said they 'totally acknowledge that countries may see needs to be even more flexible in terms of the administration of the second dose'.

It comes after England's chief medical officer, Professor Chris Whitty, defended the controversial move again last night, saying the benefits of it outweigh the risks.

He admitted there was a chance it could increase the risk of the virus developing vaccine resistance in the future but that the need to vaccinate people now was overwhelming.

Last I heard I should have my first one in March unless things change. I’m 68. A friend of 93 living in a care home hasn’t had her first one yet. Apparently the home has only just been sent the paperwork. Doesn’t seem right somehow. We’re in West Yorkshire. xxx

The usual British lack of organisation . I'm not sure how smaller units get their vaccine and have the facilities to use it. It supposedly come in batches of 975 that has to be used within three days. Our unit had evidently planned on doing 325 a day but got it up to about 500.

Im a teacher & Id be grateful for the first vaccination jab as the government has given us NO protection so our rates of infection are 3-4 times higher than the local area. Am also supposedly in the first wave but given the 96 yr old lady over the road from me has not had her 1st jab yet I think things are very slow in my area. Usual government shambles. Australia has handled matters miles better.....

My body dosent like anything interfering with it's blood and usually objects to the annual flu jab like this😡

seasider18 profile image

I used to itch like mad after Flu injections and it was found to be caused by the Formaldehyde that was then used to kill the live virus in some makes. We are both itching since our jabs but I'm putting in down to a lack of humidity in our flat that is only 22%.

We have a hospital with a big surgery beside it in the town but no hint of vaccines yet. NHS workers etc slightly further south in Inverness have started to get their first doses. Our area has had hardly any cases of covid until folks started coming north before Xmas to avoid the high numbers, unfortunately now that has translated into a surge of cases here. Wish people would stay at home in their own towns and not travel. 😒

That is the problem in Eastbourne with holiday makers and day rippers. My family connections are probably north of you.My great grandmother was from Dornoch and married a Cooper who also had a Croft in Helmsdale

Rosemaryb1349 profile image
Rosemaryb1349 in reply to seasider18

Wow how strange I was walking on Dornoch beach 3 days ago, one of my most favourite places.

seasider18 profile image
seasider18 in reply to Rosemaryb1349

She was a Ross (Married a Maclean) and born at a house named The Poles In Poles Road that went out of the Family but was later bought back. All her children apart from one left Helmsdale for Edinburgh and the croft is now a ruin. Every time she had a child she used to walk over the hills to Dornoch to show it to her mother.

My mother lived there for at time with her granny who lived in Edinburgh in her later years. We all used to go up to Helmsdale for holidays. I scattered my mothers ashes at the Croft in West Helmsdale.

Do you know of the Liberator Bomber that crashed into the sea off Helmsdale ? I was 11 and on holiday out walking on my own that morning when I witnessed the plane going into the sea. It came low down over the hillside. I could see the pilot or navigators face as he looked in vain for somewhere to land.

I watched as boats went out from Helmsdale harbour to the area.

One time in the early 90’s when we were in Helmsdale I met an old lady who had also witnessed it. She told me that I had just missed the WAAF survivor by a week when she came on one of her visits to the area.

Rosemaryb1349 profile image
Rosemaryb1349 in reply to seasider18

How Interesting and no I hadn't heard about the bomber. That was a long walk over the hills from Helmsdale to Dornoch, we take our cars for granted now for such a journey. I will give your regards to Dornoch next time I am up there, it's about a 25 min drive north from Invergordon where I live. 😀

seasider18 profile image
seasider18 in reply to Rosemaryb1349

We even stayed in Invergordon in our travels. Even been up to Orkney and Shetland and Bird Watching once on wonderful Fair Isle where we stayed at the obsersvatory for the only three decent days in the fortnight.

seasider18 profile image
seasider18 in reply to Rosemaryb1349

It had been so rough sailing from Scrabster to Orkney that my wife insisted on flying to Shetland and back to Orkney. We had to take the ferry back to Scrabster as we were going on to Helmsdale by bus. That was the worst sea journey we have ever had. We seemed to be the only only two on the ship who were not sick and just sat staring fixedly ahead. It was so rough that they had difficulty in docking but the bus going to Inverness did not wait and left us all stranded.

I had the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine at a hospital on 12 December, and was given an appointment for the second dose on this Saturday, the 9th. I was wondering whether to ring the hospital to ask what the situation was, but before I could do so I had a call from them on Tuesday confirming that I could have the vaccine as planned. I suspect that this may be due to the need to use the whole of a batch, because of its short life.
