Year off on wrong foot

This morning I went to buy a newspaper, and on the way back I slipped on the ice and broke my humerus near my shoulder, and a man helped me up. Spent a couple of hours in A&E, and am just keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn’t star the AF up. On a lighter note, the man who helped me up saw me sitting in the snow, and asked me if I had fallen. I was so tempted to answer doing the Billy Connolly joke, and say ‘no I was just trying to break a bar of chocolate in my back pocket’ bless him.

What a bad start to the year. Hope you aren’t in too much pain and you can sleep tonight without pain. Fingers crossed your heart will give you a break, sorry for the pun. Best wishes hope you feel better very soon.

Thanks meadfoot, it’s trying to sleep that’s the biggest problem, but I’ll get there.

I am sorry this happened to you. I had a client nurse that went for shoulder surgery and she gave me the best advice. I have passed it on n it helps tremendously, she said that re-injury while sleeping is very common cause you turn asleep n so on. She said sleeping in a recliner for 6 weeks to 12 weeks helps the shoulder not only not get injured again but to heal thru the night cause you are in a fixed back position. She said even if you don’t have a recliner is wise to get even a used one or borrow one. She was right my husband had surgery on his shoulder n the first night he agreed after trying to sleep in the bed n from then on slept on our recliner for about 10 weeks.Good Luck to you n God Bless❤️

I have a recliner, so I will try that tonight. Thank you so much, am willing to try anything, but that sounds good advice x

My yesterday's walk was a bit like Bambi on Ice even using two sticks as I do. There has been so much water coming off the fields that 1/4 mile of our lane was sheet ice. So easy to slip!!! Hope you recover soon and AF is not affected.

Wow Bob, you’re a brave man going out on icy bits with two sticks. Thank you but take care.

These are carbon fibre nordic treking poles not walking sticks. 4 wheel drive in other words. Used them for twenty five years long before arthritis took hold but now essential!

Ah. Was imagining you with walking sticks. Still, take care in these horrible conditions.

You better be careful! I can't even count the number of times I have slipped and fallen in snow or ice through the years. I was lucky to have never broken anything. Maybe it's good now that I'm a senior citizen that I live in Florida. No snow or ice. 😌 Do be careful though.

Invest in a walking machine for inclement weather? After my hip op I am trawling round the island unit in the kitchen on my sticks as it is icy outside and a fall would be a disaster. Today it has snowed.

Good idea Auriculaire. Yes it would be awful to fall after your hip op, too risky to go out in snow. You take care.

So sorry, are you on anticoagulants? If so, have you had a lot of bleeding? May your healing go well!

I am yes, but haven’t had any bleeding that I know of. No one asked me if I was on them. Thanks for you reply.

Thanks Mrsvemb. The biggest problem is trying to sleep.

Hope you heal soon and your heart continues to behave. Ice packs ( gel ones) might help with the pain. I am finding them very useful with the pain after my hip op as I am limited in the amou t of painkillers I can take.

Hi Cha, what a bummer! I am paranoid about about going out in slippy weather now after falling on the ice 6 years ago and fracturing my spine.

Some advice from a retired old physio. Support your arm on a pillow when trying to sleep or when sitting down. It makes such a difference.

As soon as you are able to, bend forward slightly to let your arm dangle and do small, gentle, slow Swinging movements with your arm. The bone will heal but in the meantime all the muscles and tendons around your shoulder might seize up. So repetitive slow, gentle movements will help to reduce the chances of you ending up with a frozen shoulder once your fracture has healed .

Thank you Maggimunro, to know that is very helpful. I’m getting paranoid now too. Am waiting for a call from the hospital tomorrow, once the consultant has seen the X-ray, and have been told I’ll need physio, so your info is great 👍 . And you’re right, it is a real bummer.

Sorry to hear about your fall. I hope the physio helps in your recovery. That was a scary thing to happen. I fell once on ice when I went to a newsagent's for milk - the footpath was like glass. I broke my tailbone and was very sore for a few weeks, but thankfully didn't need any treatment. I'm very nervous on ice since then and even more so since getting AF. We have a husky dog whom I walk round our front yard for 5 minutes each morning and I get nervous doing even that when it's icy. Two of my sons do most of the dog walking. I'm always anxious about losing the dog if I go down. We had snow here yesterday, but thankfully I didn't have to take the dog out as one of my sons came early to do his walk. He said he came at the time because the snow might be gone later in the day - I was amused at the difference in his attitude and mine- and very grateful too.

I would also be very worried about bleeding if I fell. My husband had a stroke last July and while he had no physical after effects, he now has aphasia so I'm having to do a lot for him and I daren't have anything bad happen to me.

Take care!

Gillian

Thanku Gillian. Still icy here and I won’t go out. It’s nice to hear it’s not just me that’s scared tho.You will have to take good care of yourself if you’re having to do a lot for your husband, so I hope you stay safe

I must have bled a bit inside the arm because the bruise was from my shoulder almost to my wrist, however it’s getting easier by the day.

Thanks for your reply.
