Ablation update!

I have just returned home from my ablation procedure at Barts yesterday. I was totally terrified and anxiety wasn’t helped by the fact that I didnt have the procedure until about 4 pm so spent all day in the ward working myself up. I was lucky enough to have Prof Schilling and his team doing my procedure and all in all it went well. I’m not going to pretend it was a breeze and I felt nothing but it wasn’t as bad as I thought. Uncomfortable and strange sensations in my jaw and throat and neck but not painful exactly. Think I also had a cardio version at the end. Had an issue when I eventually stood up after laying flat for a few hours. My groin wound bled quite profusely and they decided to keep me in. I have been told it was pretty much a success and they have managed to freeze 3 out of 4 channels. I am now just sitting in the sofa at home trying to take my mind off it all and determined to do as I’m told and rest for the week. Prof Schilling and the whole team were awesome and I have nothing but praise admiration and thanks for them all. Hopefully my QOL will start to improve and i can carry on with my life AF free!

Hope this helps for anyone due to have this done. I was truly terrified and I came out the other side. Feel free to ask any questions, this forum was a godsend for me. Xx

Good morning I hope you are much less worried now after the procedure. nine weeks ago I had my second ablation and so far I am still in normal sinus mode.Mine was carried out by Dr Ashley Nisbett in Bristol, and I have every confidence in her and her team. In my case I have been advised that if AF returns quickly I will have a pacemaker fitted, which I don't see as an issue at all. I f it returns in say 1 to 2 years then another ablation would be advised.

I am 75 years old and play golf 3 times per week, weather permitting, exercise i believe in what ever form is important, mindful not everyone will be able to.

Best wishes

Dave

Hi glad everything went well. I had an Ablation 13 years ago and the procedure was carried out whilst I was awake. I am having a repeat Ablation on Tuesday but having a General Anaesthetic this time. Did you have a GA or we’re you awake? Or we’re you given an option?

Hi BigDuncI wasn’t given a choice for a GA. Being sedated was ok but I didn’t care for the horrible feelings I experienced during the procedure. I’m just glad it’s over and fingers crossed it’s worked ok x

Resting for one week is not enough. You need at least two and then very gentle walks and no exertion for a few more. It took 5 months for my bumps and arrhythmias to stop and almost a year before resting heart rate returned to pre ablation levels. My one and only ablation was in 2013 and I am still AF free. I am convinced that a lot of this is due to being very careful of your heart for at least 6 months. good luck and take care. 🍀

Hello so glad you are doing okay. I had my third ablation under Professor Schillings team at Barts in September and have total confidence in them. I would reiterate what has been said about resting for more than a week. Even if you feel well be kind to yourself. Hope you carry on doing well .
