I think i am correct in saying that as Sudafed contains pseudo ephedrine it is not advised for those prone to arrhythmias

Yes I did and I should not have. It made my AF come on.

Both sudafed and salbutamol made my heart race even before I was diagnosed with AF. I use salt spray too and a neti pot. The old remedy of Friar's Balsam helped a lot when I had a bad bout last year.

Hi Finvola, salt spray/neti pot is new ground for me. My issue is upper respiratory stuffiness which prevents clear inhalation particularly through the left nostril for some reason. Can I ask for a bit more detail of your experience e.g. what were your symptoms that got you to try it and how effective is it and any side effects?

The nasal rinses have helped me a lot. I use a bottle rather than the netti-pot for ease of use and had no unpleasant affects. You need to use sterilised water - you can buy it but it’s expensive or boil water in a pot for at least 5 mins and leave to cool. The salts come in little sachets which you simply add to the bottle before adding the cooled water. I use Neil-Med.

My GP also suggested I use a steroid nasal spray (steroids are not absorbed but help reduce inflammation and swelling). The combination help enormously.

I’ve been struggling with this for a year now and the problem clears, I stop using the nasal rinse and nasal drip and upper respiratory difficulties and mucous return. It’s got worse again since the cold and rain returned.

Is a steroid nasal spray only available on prescription?

CDreamer profile image
CDreamer in reply to Barb1

No - you can buy OTC. I use Beconase but there are others.

PS - my left nostril is more affected and if you listen to Patrick McKewon video I posted a week or so ago - he explains why. I also use his breathing techniques and they have also helped.

That's great info thanks CDreamer on the techniques and PM's video, I have listened to some of his vids but missed that one. Have a great day.

I have put Patrick McKewon video into search but nothing has come up.

I then put your name in and nothing recent. Any ideas?

Is the discussion between Patrick McKeown and James Nestor which I posted in this reply to thread What impact does mouth breathing have on afib/ectopics? Posted 11 days ago.

YouTube has a few videos of Patrick McKeown breathing techniques, also on TED Talks and Dr Chatterjee Podcasts. James Nestor is a research journalist who recently published a book called Breath.

I missed an ‘e’ out - sorry - it’s McKeown but the Irish pronounce it not as is spelt.

This is his website but he also has videos on YouTube and was interviewed on Dr Chatterjee’s Podcast a few months ago.

His other web-site is mainly for athletes to improve performance

Any chance CD of giving me the link to PM's video on this nostril breathing issue, for some reason (i.e. my IT skills) I can't find your post nor does it come up when searching PM.

Just seen your later post re this video, sorry ignore my request!

CD has said it all - my regime is exactly the same. I started seriously looking at nasal problems when I had horrendous nosebleeds - which it turned out, were caused by allergic reactions. If you use a neti, it is essential that you use cooled boiled water.

I too had one rogue nostril and constant sinus trouble - the neti pot was the answer for me. I use NeilMed saline spray regularly, but had to stop using steroid spray - Avamys I think it was called - as it worsened my nose bleeding. No other side effects that I can think of.

Sudafed (pseudoephedrine hydrochloride) definitely gives me arrhythmia. I had to quit using it.

I used a decongestant back in August and I am confident it brought on an AF episode. i.e. It was the first time I had AF in 7 months and the drug in decongestants definitely affects the heart. This was confirmed by many people on this forum at the time as I asked for others experience. Proceed with great caution is my view. Best wishes

You could try neilmed nasal spray. Prefer it to a netipot as that makes me feel like I am being waterboarded....!

Wow thank you all for your input I’ve learnt a lot from you all. Wise lot.

GP told me use when it’s bad for 2 days. YEAH I DON’T THINK SO!! Never spoken to this Doctor before? !

BLESS YOU ALL.

I was about to have a tooth out as dentist gave me antibiotics to calm the infection in tooth. Just about to give me anaesthetic and said he wasn’t happy to remove it. After further x rays the roots of tooth were in the sinus so called sinus toothache. I felt awful never had sinus this bad before.

So feel for you all.

So more antibiotics I didn’t want to take them but the pain in my head 🥺

Hi sotolol, I used Sterimar in the summer and that was fine with no Ill effects. I take 120mg sotolol twice a day for PAF but was taking 80mg then. Hope this helps. Love your dog picture by the way!

Thank you Fibber 22.

After 12 years of sotalol I’m now on Bisoprolol. So I’m using the Sterimar also olbas oil nasal stick. So yes that does work. Cheers

So pleased you’ve found something. It’s a pain not using anti-histamine. My cardio said they can interfere with QT system. I have bisopropol as. Pip. 1 on outset and another after 2-3 hrs and then rest. So far haven’t had to resort to that as it’s new regime which started a month ago together with higher dose of sotolol. That sinus thing is horrible.

sotolol profile image
sotolol in reply to Fibber222

It is horrible. I also get a weird smell in my nose. Yuk.

I have Flecainide as pip but like you not tried it yet. Thank goodness. I’ll get an episode now I mentioned it.

Thanks for reply.
