Metoprolol

Hi,

I am on metoprolol 50mg twice a day and extremely tired. It keeps my heart in control but have absolutely no energy. Went for a short and leisurely walk and I am exhausted.

Anyone else in this situation?

Do you know what your blood pressure and pulse is while taking Metoprolol. I can only take a very small dose.

Metoprolol are pretty strong beta blockers, they could be taking your heart rate or pulse down too low. That's what they do to me.

I was on metoprolol for a while, half the dose you’re taking, I was exhausted all the time. See if your dr will try something else.

What did you change to? Did that help?

I was on flecainide after that and I felt great on that. Then the dr took me off that after an ablation and switched me to sotalol. Not sure why, and since that dr didn’t like to answer my questions, I switched to a new dr. Still on sotalol, not loving it, but better than metoprolol. Good luck, be persistent!

I was put on half your dosage and my energy level caved in such that life just wasn't worth living. Couldn't work out. Lost my curiosity about life. The cardiologist then tried me on three or four other drugs and finally gave up. I'm now waiting for the pandemic to end so I can have an ablation.

It is reassuring to hear I am not the only one! I used to work out everyday and now a short walk and I am exhausted!

I had the same reaction as you that life just wasn't worth living and that I had done all in this world. Plus, I could hardly get out of bed. My inadequate GP just ignored my comments when I said that I was just not going to take the drug anymore. He merely said that you're not the only one that feels that way. The ignorance of GPs about AF.

Personally I try not to think about side effects and treat things like tiredness as a natural progression of ageing - now 73. Have had two ablations but still on metoprolol 25mg x 3 daily. Exercise like gardening and walking I do in short bursts of 15 - 30 minutes then rest. Taking medication routinely at the same time each day seems to help and I’ve lost a stone in lockdown with improved diet etc. I am now back to the same weight I was before my hormone therapy for prostate cancer which reall did exhaust me but luckily was successful with radiotherapy.

We’re all different as has been said many times on this forum and our reaction to treatment vary wildly. Getting on with what we find therapeutic and trying to forget our ailments isn’t easy but sometimes the best of medicines. I’m off fishing with my grandson later this week - can’t wait- but the lawns need mowing first😀.

Interesting that you are on metoprolol 25mg x 3 daily having had two ablations. I am on Propafenone after 3 ablations, and I do feel that it is keeping my AF at bay. But I do have energy to garden all day but not at the level pre AF. Does the choice of Metoprolol have anything to do with you having had prostate cancer?

Looking back I was put on a very low dose of metoprolol in 2010 when first diagnosed with PAF. As the frequency of episodes increased so did the dosage until I was fortunately referred to an excellent EP. and had two ablations. I have stayed on metoprolol primarily because I had several long episodes of AF after my ablations and it took a long time for things to settle down. I had 3 years primarily AF free but have had a few episodes this year which I’ve discussed by telephone with the arrhythmia nurse. We agreed not to change anything at present but I can take an ECG from my watch if necessary and email the result- hopefully that won’t be necessary.

My prostate cancer was initially detected in 2017 from a raised PSA in a routine blood test for a chest infection. I was very lucky that it was localised and there was no suggestion it was linked to anything else other than possibly my age.

After my first bout with AF I tried the drug route as it was the fastest way to get back into the cockpit. Biggest mistake I ever made. My wife used to wake up in the middle of the night to make sure I was still breathing. I felt like a run down toy. I was on Metoprolol and Flecanide at the time. 25mg of Metoprolol per day and then down to 12.5mg of Metoprolol per day. My cardiologist would not take me off the drugs. Even after my successful ablation he would not take me off Metoprolol. I did it myself and have never looked back.

I am on it too but it does not prohibit me from walking or playing Pickleball. I do notice that after playing for a couple of hours that I will come back and take a nap. Maybe that is because I’m 80 years old ?
