AV node ablation

I’m looking at AVNode ablation option if cardioversion does not work which is scheduled for 2 weeks with loading on tykosyn in hospital. Could those of you who have had the node ablation or have information about it please share? I have been told I cannot continue being in tachycardia days after day.

Thanks

Eliza

I’ve had the AV Node Ablation

It’s the best procedure out of the whole lot.

It’s given back to me by way of quality of life.

Sure...you get a pacemaker as you become PM dependent. I’ve had mine for seven years without incident.

It’s a shame it’s the last procedure on the list. 😊

How does it help your heart from the strain of being in constant tachycardia?

I’m not in constant Tachycardia anymore 😊

Best procedure ever....I’m basically free from all of that stuff.

Hi Tibetan 36

I’m having the avnode ablation in a week. I know you said best procedure ever and I thank you for that. I’m going to have those words be my mantra! I’m a bit nervous about the whole thing but it is a definite. Cannot live with the constant tachycardia Recovery time?

Give yourself a minimum of two weeks rest....then gently ease yourself back into daily life.

You’ll have a pacemaker so the site may be a little sore until it heals over. Don’t sleep on your left side for a while.

I wish you every success and I know you’ll probably the same as I did. Why didn’t I have this procedure first. 🙏😊

I already have a pacemaker so that will help. Yes I agree that this option should be made available sooner.

I do appreciate your words of support. Thank you so much

Yes! Done! AVNode ablation done! What an amazing thing......my heart rate is SAME number ALL the time. Afib gone. No more heart meds except for blood thinner. So happy I did it.

I sometimes wonder just how much doctors know about this condition. It really does vary so much from person to person. I have lived with permanent AF for years, in fact I was first diagnosed at age 21 and I am now 57. Medications don’t work for me and just make me feel worse, cardioversion nearly killed me.

So I’ve now pretty much decided to leave well enough alone. I live an active life anyway, so will continue to do so

Ummm, can't think of any I can't do... I'm crap at running distances though, always have been!

Once the COVID lockdown is over, I'll be back to the gym, walking and my work as a carpet cleaner. But my cardio and GP always have a fit when they see my ECG's, ultrasounds, monitors etc. After the last round of expensive cardiologist visits ($325 for a 10 minute phone call FFS!) I've decided I'll continue my own health regime without meds, as I have done for the last 37-odd years!

Was told I cannot allow my heartbeat to stay this high constantly. I’m not just dealing with irregular heartbeat.

Hopefully the Tikosyn will work and the ablation will not be necessary. I have been on Tikosyn for 3 yrs and the CV was not even necessary as I reverted to NSR while being loaded and have been in it ever since.

I had the PM inserted and at the 6 week check, not had another AF episode so when I got the call for AV node ablation, I talked to my EP and decided to cancel the ablation. That was Oct 2018 and I can count on one hand the number of episodes I had since and all were short and not really symptomatic.

I had bi-ventricular resynchronisation therapy PM.

Can I ask what your resting heart rate is please? I am interested because mine is in the low 100's now and I am thinking that I will need a PM, as it is very hard to live with.

The pacemaker does nothing to slow the heartbeat down unless I get the AV node ablation I believe than the pacer can help. I’m not clear how the AV node ablation helps the heart from the tachycardia strain which I was told it does.

I had AV ablation. It does not eliminate AF. It removes the path from the A to the V so you can reduce the meds and their deleterious effects. It does make your heartbeat 100 percent de pendendent on the pacer.

Is there any reason why you have not considered Pulmonary Vein Isolation Ablation

Eliza2 profile image
Eliza2 in reply toJumper

I had 3 of them resulting in pulmonary vein stenosis. They did get rid of the afib for 2 years but it has come back unfortunately.

Hi

Yes I had my AV node ablation 3 years ago and it has been a great relief after years of very symptomatic AF missing various family events including wife’s birthday foreign holidays etc.

Only problem I have had is that after the procedure I was taken off blood pressure medicine and last year had a small stroke because my blood pressure had raised and no one took any notice when I mentioned it. So go ahead it’s a great release to be free from the constant worry . I do sometimes feel a very slight sensation of irregular beats but it doesn’t bother me.

Good Luck

Eliza, could you give an update on how you are now`? Can you still feel the AF, even if your heart rate has come down? And what about stairs and general fitness?
