Pam Ayres' Poem

Friend sent me this

Time for us girls

I'm normally a social girl

I love to meet my mates

But lately with the virus here

We can't go out the gates.

You see, we are the 'oldies' now

We need to stay inside

If they haven't seen us for a while

They'll think we've upped and died.

They'll never know the things we did

Before we got this old

There wasn't any Facebook

So not everything was told.

We may seem sweet old ladies

Who would never be uncouth

But we grew up in the 60s -

If you only knew the truth!

There was sex and drugs and rock 'n roll

The pill and miniskirts

We smoked, we drank, we partied

And were quite outrageous flirts.

Then we settled down, got married

And turned into someone's mum,

Somebody's wife, then nana,

Who on earth did we become?

We didn't mind the change of pace

Because our lives were full

But to bury us before we're dead

Is like a red rag to a bull!

So here you find me stuck inside

For 4 weeks, maybe more

I finally found myself again

Then I had to close the door!

It didnt really bother me

I'd while away the hour

I'd bake for all the family

But I've got no flaming flour!

Now Netflix is just wonderful

I like a gutsy thriller

I'm swooning over Idris

Or some random sexy killer.

At least I've got a stash of booze

For when I'm being idle

There's wine and whiskey, even gin

If I'm feeling suicidal!

So let's all drink to lockdown

To recovery and health

And hope this awful virus

Doesn't decimate our wealth.

We'll all get through the crisis

And be back to join our mates

Just hoping I'm not far too wide

To fit through the flaming gates!

I was a 60's girl.Stopped a few in their tracks with my mini skirts! Sage green was a favourite fashion colour I remember. Finding out where the Marie Stopes clinic was and when you found it dashing through the door before anyone spotted you!And....oh, the 100 Club in oxford street was the place to find 'interesting' male company.....Chris Barber and Humph. Lyttleton played there regularly. We twisted the evening away but not the night .They closed at c 11.30!

I saw live groups the Who Four Tops London coliseum Gorgie Fame. Went to the Cali in Dunstable. Saw every group going. Had a black Morris 1000 went all over. I had a Biba fur coat eyes like Dusty Springfield. Think I’ll stop now. Goodness how did I get so old. 😊

Met Dusty Springfield in a shoe shop (irony considering she liked to perform barefoot) in Sheffield! Recently clearing out drawers I came across autographed pic of Gerry Marsden - ruined a great pair of white kitten heels in the mud getting that! They say if you can remember the 60’s - you weren’t really there. We thought we were so cool, I used to think being 40 was incredibly old.....

Wasn't it Sandie Shaw who sang barefoot?

Me too. Kitten heels wow a blast from the past. I so enjoyed my youth. My job and living at home. Miss it all.

No drugs for me, either. I once experienced second hand dope and hated it! Not remotely tempted. I did used to enjoy alcohol though, before the Afib took the pleasure out of it.

Dipping back into my 60's memories for my current book. The things I'd forgotten!

I drank cherry B and cider. Car with no seat belts and I’d drive every one home. Radio on back shelf tied with string stop it sliding around! Tune in while driving stretched over seats. 😩surprised I’m still here. Shocking really.

I know! Rows of children on the back seat, all falling off if the car braked. No one got hurt! (We were lucky!!!) And being left outside pubs in the car, given the occasional lemonade or packet of crisps.

I’m soo jealous 😆. My mum used to have a drink called Devils eye at Christmas, advocates with cherry brandy in the middle. I used to love that too, I’ve never been a heavy drinker and since AF almost nothing but this post is making me fancy one! 😉
