Permanent AF

I am in permanent AF and when on Bisoprolol, for many years, had many unpleasant side effects. I read up about various other options and suggested to my Consultant having a trial period of Diltiazem. I bounced back into his Consulting rooms some four weeks later feeling like a new woman. I am very pleased to say that I am still bouncing some fifteen months later. Occasionally I feel a bit uncomfortable with the speed of my poor heart but whilst it continues to oblige in spite of my abuse of it, I shall continue to enjoy every moment. I am a very fortunate, active, motivated 73 year old lady.

Good for you. I took one pill of it and thought I would die. Wanted to as well! Vive la difference.

When I was in getting my pacemaker fitted a patient was being taken off it by an EP after swollen ankles and dizzy turns that had caused a fall and a broken clavicle.

Meantime my EP was putting me on it. My GP twice reduced the dose in the next week before he took me off it.

I appear to be allergic to calcium channel blockers . Tried amlodopine as well and ankles and feet swelled so much I couldn't wear shoes.

I did not get on well with amlodopine the first BP med I was prescribed.

but all ACE inhibitors were worse.

It is the most wonderful feeling to 'bounce' back to life after feeling half dead for some time. It has happened to me twice.Once after a 'minor' heart surgical procedure and then another time after taking a new medication. So glad to hear of your improved health.

Thank you, every day I realise just how lucky I am.

It's good to hear of medication that's actually made you feel so much better. Must remember the name Diltiazem and will go now and look it up.

I was the same as Bob.....felt like I was dying and then frightened I wouldn't!

Good that it suits you though.

Like most, I was first prescribed Bisoprolol and took for almost a year. I then changed to Diltiazem and like you, the difference was amazing.......

I know what you mean about feeling like a new woman...simply stopping Bisoprolol ( with no replacement as it happens) had that effect on me.

Good on you and thanks for posting, I had similar experiences - drug from hell I called it.

10days on the lowest dose of Bisoprolol was enough for me - couldn’t function at all, BP & HR dropped so low I could barely stand. Glad you found a better drug that suits.

So glad that you’re feeling better. I remember after my first cardioversion almost skipping down the street, it was a lovely feeling. Unfortunately it didn’t stay like that for long. I’m now waiting for my third ablation and will remember the name of that drug as it hasn’t been tried yet.
