Kombucha or Apple Cider Vinegar for gut health while on Apixaban?

There was an interesting programme on t.v. last night where one of the presenters took a test which showed she had a very unhealthy gut bacteria which resulted in bloating and stomach issues. She was advised about her diet and also advised to take Kombucha or Kefir Milk, which seemed to improve her situation greatly. I had my gall bladder removed a few years ago which was very successful but can give me problems in the gut every now and then, so I Googled as you do and then it became confusing whether I can take one or the other if on Apixaban. For instance, 'Kombucha contains all the elements of Green Tea' which, I read elsewhere, should not be consumed while on Apixaban. I would be grateful for any comments because I would like to give one or the other a go if possible.

Hi Eddie :-) where did you see that green tea is not compatible with Apixaban.

I have seen anecdotal reports of all sorts of things not being compatible with Apixaban (which I also take) from garlic to turmeric but the only substance mentioned in the leaflet that comes with the Apixaban and on the offical site is St Johns Wort and I think that is the first place to look.

You could always check with a pharmacist.

I drink green tea in small amounts one weak cup some days and I intend to have a go at making Kombucha shortly when I have got over making large quantities of Kimchi which made the whole house smell of rotting cabbage. I also make sourdough bread with my own starter which I find a lot more more palatable than the Kimchi .

There is only a small amount of green tea in Kombucha and I don't intent to drink gallons of it just a tiny glass some days daily. This should be diluted by my diet which is Mediterranean style with lots of vegetables/grains/pulses/nuts/fruit/ fish /homemade bread and olive oil.

If you are going for good gut bacteria aim to eat a wide range of healthy foods each day,

A word of about apple cider vinegar (the genuine cloudy stuff) it is very acidic and can affect your teeth so wash your mouth out with clean water if you take .

Hi doodle. One site amongst others I visited, Consumerlab.com. says that Green Tea inhibits CYP3AA, a liver enzyme which breaks down certain medications such as anti-coagulant drugs which can lead to excessive blood levels and increase their effects and side effects. I have also read somewhere that Cod Liver oil is a no-no if on anti-coagulants. I suffer with thoracic nerve pain and was taking CBD oil to great effect - but again was told by a pharmacist and read online that CBD is incompatible with Apixaban. Grr. becomes confusing!

Years ago I "grew" kombucha but always used black tea simply because 35 years ago I'd never heard of green tea!! When the kombucha "babies" started taking over the fridge and the kombucha the airing cupboard, I stopped. I now drink bought kefir.

I’m on Apixaban - I make & take my own dairy & water kefir, Jun - which is Kumboocha made with green tea & honey (delicious!), sourdough bread, sauerkraut & fermented vegetables. I’ve had no gut or gastric problems since starting about 4 years ago.

Dairy kefir is really easy to make - many people will share grains - we have a group in my town who frequently swop & share. Ready made kefir is expensive to buy & avoid anything from a supermarket as it Wilk be days old.

It’s not either/or - eat & drink as many different fermented foods as you can but ensure you buy organic cider vinegar made from the mother & none pasteurised versions of sauerkraut - otherwise you defeat the purpose. It’s quite hard to find & will always be in a fridge & have a one way valve to release the gas.

I learned all I needed from Tiffany - culturelove.co.uk/about/ she’s brilliant & does lots of workshops in Dorset/Devon & London. She will also supply dairy kefir grains - details on her blog site.

PS - Kumboocha is made from Black tea & sugar - different scoobie.

My favourite is the roasted beetroot but the carrots are well worth doing as makes a great instant snack/lunch with some hummus.

Snap on the gall bladder successful removal 15 years ago, whilst on holiday in Portugal - unscheduled but hugely grateful to Braga hospital! The only minor issue I have with the gut is occasional loud burps to restore comfort due to bloating I guess from poorly digested fat. On foods generally, I think the point a lot of people miss (CDreamer mentioned it re Kefir) is it more important where you buy as what you buy. Sourcing the right quality foods at a convenient location and accepting you have to pay double what the equivalent 'junk' food gets sold at is difficult - 2 examples I eat quinoa bread sourced from artisanbread-abo.com & dairy/veg/meat from plawhatchfarm.co.uk It takes a while to find such places in your area or accept the delivery route. Sorry I didn't answer your question but I thought the above might help.

Interesting. Drink Cider vinegar every day 1 tbsp in glass of water. Usually at the same time as I take Apixaban. Similarly I drink my own concoction of Golden Milk, Turmeric, with added herbs and spices every evening. Again at the same time as I take Apixaban.

I have stopped taking Fish Oil as it or the heavy metals it contains is not good for blokes. Evidently it is linked with Prostate Cancer.

As for the Cider and Turmeric can only say I have no known or felt side effects. Have been Afib, as far as I know, and from previous incidents, I would know. Afib free.

I'm not suggesting people follow my example. But as far as contra indications as mentioned only St John's Wort is picked out. Turmeric has certainly helped my sports injuries arthritis and I would say general health.

Start with kefir as it's very easy to make and doesn't have to hang around for ages. I make my own and think it has definitely helped reduce bloating etc.

My wife and I drink Kefir every day and it has helped our digestion emormously. My wife had her gall bladder removed and was always waking up with heartburn at night, but since taking Kefir this has stopped and we are both regular as clockwork!

If you try Kefir you must make it fresh yourself as it's far cheaper and is more powerful. It's a doddle to make, just get some grains and pop them in milk (I use full fat goats milk) for 24 hours, strain, and there you are! Repeat this every day for fresh Kefir, the grains grow very fast and you end up chucking loads away....or giving them to friends.

We also make our own Sauerkraut which is very good for gut health.....believe me, a healthy gut is a happy person!

That sounds good tunybgur. Thanks for the advice. How much of the grains you would otherwise chuck away do you use to make a fresh batch?
