I had 6 episodes of what some doctors said was AF

others were not so shure

it made me Dizy my heart beat 200 bpm I had urge to use lo and felt nautious it lasted 5 hrs I lost consiousness several times fleetingly, felt I was going to die.

The ambulance men caught it on ecg but by the time I got to hosp it had reverted.

this happened once a month for 6 months.

my medication is now controlling Af very well and I tolerate meds fine.

but I'm exsausted .

I fear the efect of the meds loosing there ability to controle af as I have read it only works for 12 to 18 months cadiologist refered me for heart examination I was not aware until this week he will do abolation at the same time if I need it.

so I'm scared and unprepared

but don't want to not have it because it's so bad when it happens. I have now read some of the risks(it's worrying).

Let me explain that it is not the drugs stopping working but the AF progressing which is normal. Some people are lucky and manage very well on drugs for many many years whilst others find that they need to move on and change treatment. It is also important to understand that any and all treatment for AF is only ever for stopping symptoms and quality of life (QOL) as cure is not a word we generally use.

Ablation can and often does stop symptoms and improve QOL so if offered I think a lot of people will take that route. I did and even though I needed three ablations, I have been AF free for 11 years.

Nothing is without risk. Even taking no action has risks.

If you are going for ablation read our two fact sheets on preparing for and recovering from an ablation.

From what you have told us, you have been seen by a specialist at the hospital in Hull and it has been decided to give you an ablation next Tuesday and we have done our best to prepare you for the procedure. We know that the whole process can be quite scary but EP’s are not going to perform an ablation unless they are reasonably confident that you will benefit from the procedure. You are almost there, try to remain calm for the next few days and follow closely the recommendations featured in the factsheets, together with any other information provided by your Hospital. Dwelling on the history will not help you now, you are doing the right thing to help control your AF symptoms. Thousands of ablations are performed each year in the UK alone and whilst any procedure carries a risk, ablations have a low risk.

Great advice⭐️

Ive not had an ablation because for now my a fib is an infrequent visitor. If I had severe episodes like yours, I would be sleeping on my EP’s doorstep begging for an ablation. Keep us posted on how you get along.

When the doc told me I had AF, my pulse was 188. I had no clue. Looking back, I had classic symptoms, but was not aware. I did get dizzy upon standing and would look for a soft place to land....never did pass out.

Cardioversion helped for a few months , but had to have two ablations.

FYI, I’m convinced coffee and alcohol are suspect, as well as we have a home at 5,000 ft. Elevation is also a factor, I’m told.
